PRESIDENT’S REPORT
2016 has been another successful season for the Nuriootpa Hockey Club. As a first time
President, it has been a year of learning and one that I will look back on with great pride.
Having been on the committee for a number of years, I felt that I knew what to expect but
even with this grounding, I have been blown away by the amount of time and effort that our
volunteers put in at all levels to keep this club at the forefront of hockey in the Barossa.
On field, our Under 18’s led the way taking out the Premiership with an impressive
dismantling of Tanunda on Grand Final Day. Our Under 13’s were runners-up in their grade,
while the A Women fell agonisingly short in an epic Grand Final. This was a remarkable
match, 3-1 down with less than 10 minutes to go, our girls could have packed up but instead
ran all over Gawler, to the point where the hot favourites were simply hanging for full time
and the respite of penalty flicks. The hunger to succeed will burn over the pre-season and
few would bet against them going one better in 2017.
Our Men missed out on a Grand Final for the first time since the mid-90’s, with both the A
Men and B Men Gold falling at the Preliminary final stage. The transition from our
legendary “Ten in a row” squad will continue, as we embrace the new challenges, welcome
new faces and build again.
Our Hookin2Hockey program was once again a highlight, successful to the point we had to
breathe life into the old “Nuri Orange” name and enter a third team in the Under 9’s mid-
season. Many thanks to Gail Kirby for her years of service at this level and her vision for
succession planning which will ensure a seamless transition for our co-ordinators and willing
parents in the future.
2016 had many highlights for the club. Michael Grope was inducted as our 17th Life
Member, Marie Waechter played her 350th Senior Match and Adrian Hoffmann became our
first 30 Year Player.
At a State level, Andy Milne was recognised as the Hockey SA Coach of the Year and we
were once again well represented at State Country level by Dion Tate, Cody Longo and Kim
Blatchford, while Brie Burgess was named in the SA Under 13’s Girl’s Squad and had a
number of players represent the state at Masters level.
Locally, we produced BVHA Best and Fairest Winners in Kim Blatchford (A Women), Steven
Gallasch (B Men) and Josh Longo (Under 13’s) while, Gail Kirby and Sue Stephen were
named joint winners of the BVHA Volunteer of the Year and Andy Kath was awarded the
BVHA Umpire of the Year.

Off field, Nuri again were the driving force behind the Association’s Pink Round, raising
money for Barossa Area Fundraisers of Cancer. The canteen was a vital source of revenue
and thanks goes to our co-ordinators April Hoffmann, Donna Lehmann and their families for
the time and effort they put into making this work and the manner in which it was run.
After much debate, we rolled out our new senior uniforms and it once again showed our
ability as a club to listen to all points of view and then pull together to make it work once a
decision has been made.
Socially, Heritage Round again provided a wonderful stage to celebrate our club history
while the Bingo Night and ever popular, Trivia Night were an enjoyable way to get together
and support the club.
It has been a great privilege to be President of the Nuriootpa Hockey Club for 2016. Holding
a position like this comes with a long list of people to thank. I would like to thank my wife,
Sarah for her support and allowing me the time to fully commit to this role.
I would like to thank my committee; you have been an incredible source of support,
enthusiasm and ideas. The work you have done to keep this club building is to be admired.
I would like to make special mention of Amanda Schulz, who is stepping down as Treasurer
after three years and thank her for the professional and trustworthy manner in which she
has conducted herself in this role.
As an association, it has also been a year which has brought into sharper focus the true cost
and opportunities created for clubs by the development of the turf pitch at Stockwell.
Our club is well placed to thrive in this era of change but we must continue to adapt and
innovate to remain ahead of the curve. To do this we must hold fast to the cornerstones of
our club; hard work, development, community engagement, volunteering, mateship,
celebrating success and most of all enjoyment because moving forward, we are not going to
have it all our own way.

TREASURER’S REPORT
Firstly, I’d like to thank Nuriootpa Hockey Club for having me as their Treasurer for the past
3 years. It has been a pleasure.
I would like to have left seeing the club on a profitable year but unfortunately we are a little
down this year compared to last year.
Please keep in mind that the club has made some “investment buys” such as new goalie
gear and a small stock pile of new senior uniforms.
Hats off to April and Donna for a successful year in the canteen, with a 15% increase in
profit compared to last year.
Unfortunately, our fundraising efforts could not compare to last year’s efforts with a
decrease of almost 60%, whilst our sponsorship was at a 3 year high up $2000 from the
previous year.
With the expenses of Association Fees (Match, Training and Pitch Hire) and our Presentation
Day lunch saw a short fall of $5697.48 from player’s subs. Perhaps a revaluation on the costs
of subs in 2017 should be considered to ensure our clubs financial stability.

JUNIOR COORDINATOR’S REPORT
This year all of our junior teams needed the younger grades to help with numbers.
Our 13's did an amazing job being runners up.
Most of this team were new to full field hockey after coming up from the 11's. Coached by
Adrian Hoffmann, they learnt a lot and will grow so much more if Hoffy continues to coach
them.
Our 15's struggled to get a coach at the start of the year but Ethan stepped up and took
them on. We weren't as successful as we probably could have been but still had a great
season. We struggled for numbers in this grade but I think our numbers are growing so we
will be better in the future.
Our 18's were Premiers again after a convincing win over Tanunda in the Grand Final. This is
a hard group to coach as they are working or studying and often don't attend training. We
struggled for numbers in this grade as well, with under 15's needed every week and
sometimes even under 13's stepping up to help us field a team. This is a very talented group
of kids and I think they are an asset to our senior teams as well.
It would be good to see more of them in seniors, especially A Grade.
All in all, it was a great season by all our junior teams and with the Development Athlete
Program (DAP) as well as our own coaches, these kids will continue to grow.

HOOK IN2 HOCKEY COORDINATOR REPORT
It’s been another great year for the Club with our H2H program, as we continue to introduce
and get kids involved in hockey at an early age to be the future players of the Club. There
was a 99% return of players from last year and also an increase in new kids participating and
families that joined the club.
The club again was able to have a presence in the local primary schools with the H2H
program in term 1, before the season started. Visiting Redeemer, Kapunda, Light Pass and
Nuriootpa. This still is one of the best ways to recruit new players to hockey. A big thank you
to Andrew (Raj) Pomeroy for coming out to Redeemer to help me.
We kicked off H2H with a Come n Try on Tuesday 12th April, which was well attended. The
Family Fun Day was held by the Club on Sunday 10th April, where the Senior players came
out to do some skill sessions with our H2H kids. It was a great success and fun for all. Thank
you to the Senior players that came out to help.
We started the season with registration night and the hand out of shirts on Tuesday 3rd
May. This was a busy night with about 45 players turning up. Thank you to Aimee Fairey
who helped out a lot with organising and communicating with parents for the coaches and
myself.
This year there were 26 U9’s registered to play on Saturdays. The start of the season and the
first 7 weeks had NHC field one Joeys team (which is an early entry/U7’s team that the
BVHA introduced) and 2 U9’s team. The second block or term, NHC had a Joey’s team and 3
U9’s teams. A big thank you to Sharyn Saegenschnitter who ran trainings. Thank you and
well done to our juniors; Hilary Sheedy, Amelia Hoffmann and Byron Hoffmann, for helping
at trainings and coaching a team, and to Sharyn Saegenschnitter, Rebecca Carter and Kim
Doecke for their mentoring and time coaching. Thank you also to the many parents who got
them to training and out to Saturday games.
This year we introduced a roster for our senior players to for the Joey and U9 umpiring
commitments, which worked quite well.
We had 21 registered U11’s, which made 2 teams, but not quite enough to comfortably
have 3. Which meant most Saturdays, when we could, we would play 9 a side instead of the
usual 7 a side. Thank you to Tristan Barratt, Henry Sheedy and Tony Simpfendorfer for
helping me with the training and coaching the U11’s.
This year saw the BVHA and our own club organise fun themes and events throughout the
year. With a crazy hair day, Go Pink and an Olympic Round on the Saturdays. The H2H club
Disco was well attended on Heritage Round, thank you to DJ Byron and Amelia who helped
out and Rebecca Carter, Aimee Fairey and Sharyn Saegenschnitter for organising and
sponsors Dimchurch Vineyard and April Hoffmann for drinks and food.

The H2H presentations were held at the Stockwell Clubrooms on Sunday 28th August, the
Sunday after the last Saturday games. Families were asked to bring a shared plate and the
nice weather made for a good social afternoon. Players received a certificate and a NHC
drink bottle, sponsored by Dimchurch Vineyard.
It has been very rewarding to see the H2H numbers grow in our club over the last 4 years
and hopefully that will continue. We have a good structure and a future plan in place, that
can be followed and continue to develop for H2H at Nuriootpa.

A MEN REPORT
2016 was an interesting year for the NHC A grade men who entered the season after a solid
pre-season led once again by Craig and Greg Schulz. The early indications were that the
competition had evened up and that it would be a very competitive year, these indications
proved to be correct as every match was a battle for the majority of the year.
The aims set for the side were basic and broad but none the less important.
Grow and improve as a side over the season;
Improve individual skills;
Develop a game plan and style of play that wins matches;
Maintain the NHC ethos of mateship across the senior grades;
Develop younger player; and,
Win the Premiership.
Some of these goals were achieved while others will need continued work in the future.
The team had an inconsistent season result wise with the gap between our best hockey and
our worst hockey being too large for my liking, but there were some really strong results
and a marked improvement in general over the year. Most pleasing was the way that
several newer members of the side took on key roles with a high level of maturity, this
bodes well for the future.
Late in the season the side let themselves down on a couple of occasions as players slipped
into old habits or strayed from the plan and ultimately those matches cost the side a chance
to finish top two at the end of the minor round. A Semi-final Victory over Tanunda saw the
team play AMU in the Preliminary final in which we were knocked out despite a spirited
effort. A final ranking of 3rd is not what we wanted and I am sure that it will act a catalyst
for improvement next season.
I mentioned in my presentation day speech that Hockey is a game that is in a constant state
of change with new rules and tactics moving the game in different directions over time. The
challenge that comes with this is to move with and embrace these changes, this is
something that NHC has done well in the past but it requires constant work and this season
to me suggests that we need to work hard in this area or risk falling behind the game.
Within the NHC senior mens group there is plenty of talent, plenty of desire and plenty of
grit and determination. These are good things but without a greater understanding of the
team’s structure and what we are trying to achieve within a game plan by the players the
other attributes are diminished and may become ineffective.
22 | P a g e
Some may think that this assessment of the 2016 season is overly critical and fair enough, it
wasn’t a bad season, there were many positives and the players fought admirably under
some condition they could not control but we set high standards at this club and we must
respect those standards and be honest when reviewing results. I know personally that I
don’t want to see a day when the NHC A grade men “Used to be a great team”. We have
been challenged, and as a group (players and coaches) we need to respond to that
challenge. I have every faith that playing group will work hard to improve but as the old
saying goes “We need to play smarter, not harder”, this is the thinking I wish to apply to the
side next season if I am reinstated as coach which is something I am hoping will occur.
I would like to thank several people for their hard work and assistance over the season.
The B grade coaches and managers - Tony Simpendorfer, Brian Ivkovic, Michael
Grope, Adrian Hoffmann and Mark Schutz.
The A Grade Leadership Group - Craig Schulz, Greg Schulz, Dexter Falkenberg and
Dave McInerney.
The A grade manager – Wal Lehmann, who is stepping down after 4 seasons in the
role.
Thank you guys so much for your efforts this year.
I will close with a quote. “Winning isn’t everything, but making the effort to win is.”
Legendry NFL coach Vince Lombardi.

A WOMEN REPORT
Season 2016 started a little earlier than usual for our Women’s teams, with Flappy and
Kimmy running a preseason fitness programme. By all counts the programme was very
beneficial to our cause in 2016 and the overall fitness of all players that participated, thanks
to all involved and to the players for their efforts during the preseason! Well done.
Introducing new structures and playing groups and roles was a risk, a risk that I knew the
players could and would adapt to and manage at a high level, diversifying players in
multipole roles in and around the playing groups. This assisted players understanding the
playing roles in their core positions, positioning off ball, movement laterally and stretching
into attack, congesting play to a ball side and stretching our wide backs and attacking mid’s
to the open side to transfer and inject into attack. This structure and our game plans have
changed the dynamic in women’s hockey in the BVHA, a complete credit to our chicks and
moving forward things will only improve.
Trainings need more availability from players and commitment to the cause, I understand
that we have families and work but I feel that we can achieve more from trainings with solid
numbers consistently. This is an improvement area.
There are lots more playing structure drills and set plays that can be introduced if we have
numbers at training, this would allow teams to separate and concentrate on the higher level
trainings available to our senior players. The more we implement, the harder we are to play
against, skill sets, different pressing formations other than our arrow head. Pocket pressing,
relaxed press, half court set up and full attacking press locking in our attacking half. The list
does go on.
Understand we are only 2 years in on a 3-year programme and to have pushed the limits for
a miss at finals in 2015, I feel that the result in 2016 exemplifies the hard work and ability to
absorb information and instruction and to implement that on the hockey field is of a high
level. We were bloody unlucky not to be champs and to lose in sudden death strokes was
disappointing but an absolute credit to our chicks.
It has been a very heavy work load for 2016 coaching wise; NHC A women a great result,
team of the year a good win versus the Riverland, BVHA Senior champs great result finishing
runners up, a grand final for our chicks, NEHC U18 girls finished 4th and a debut U13 girls
State team coaching role again a fantastic result finishing 3rd from 12. I am very proud of all I
have been involved with during 2016 and the rewards were greatly appreciated thank you
and well done on a fantastic season and result.
24 | P a g e
As a coach I have so much that I would like to achieve; a Premier League coaching role, State
roles (I have been named head coach for the U13 girls’ team again in 2017). And an
opportunity to take the U15 girls in 2018.
Since the Hockey SA awards night Coach of the Year Award and the recent state coaching
success, I have had numerous clubs and coaches at higher levels open doors for future
development and it is definitely something I am contemplating. I have a drive to be the SA
SUNS head coach within the next 4 years. I have been invited to attend SASI trainings and
programmes to gain an understanding on the requirements from players through to the
commitment and expectation of coaching staff to players. So for the 2017 season I have
some thinking and decisions to make prior.
Thank you again for a fantastic season and your efforts throughout, I am proud to be
affiliated with this fantastic club and our people.
