Ed McKenzie, BA, MA
Ed considers it an honour to be involved in the field of leadership and learning. He describes himself as one of the fortunate few who get an opportunity to do what they really care about, a chance to do meaningful work with others who truly want to make a difference in our world. With a calm, clear and friendly presence, Ed prides himself on being able to engage others in in thoughtful and meaningful ways to bring about transformative learning. When Ed reflects on the paths that have led him to his current work, he realizes they all involve a curiosity about people – how they think, how they feel, how they act and how they communicate with each other. Consequently, it’s no surprise that Ed spent a great deal of his working
life as a journalist and corporate communications specialist before teaming up with his wife Cathy in 2000 to establish Learning By Heart Consulting, a firm that works with a wide variety of public and private sector clients, nationally and internationally. One of the largest, and most rewarding, consulting projects Ed has ever undertaken involved the health care system in British Columbia. In 2007, he co-facilitated a series of public meetings throughout the province as part of a major government initiative entitled “Conversation on Health”. Today, as a LEADS in a Caring Environment specialist, Ed works extensively in the Canadian health sector, facilitating workshops designed to “bring LEADS to life”. In 2001 Ed completed his Masters degree in Leadership and Training at Royal Roads University in Victoria where he now proudly serves as an associate faculty member. He also teaches at The Banff Centre.
Over the years, Ed has given, and received, his greatest gifts at home – as a husband and the father of two grown children. To stay balanced, Ed loves to play guitar, read, and walk, talk and travel with Cathy.
Government & public relations strategy consultant
MARC HENRY, PRESIDENT THINKHQ PUBLIC AFFAIRS, INC.
Marc Henry is the President of ThinkHQ Public Affairs, Inc., an Alberta-based government and
public relations strategy consultancy.
Prior to founding ThinkHQ Public Affairs Inc. in August of 2011, Mr. Henry was the three-term
Chief of Staff to Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier.
In his nine years in this role, Mr. Henry was the chief political advisor to the mayor, as well as
responsibilities for liaison between the Mayor’s Office, other members of City Council, senior city
management and intergovernmental affairs. This role provided Mr. Henry with unique and eclectic
perspectives on all aspects of public governance, including media relations, planning and
development, budgeting and finance, infrastructure development, environmental protection,
corporate communications and community engagement.
Known as a tireless advocate for Calgary’s infrastructure, Mayor Bronconnier found unprecedented
success in securing funding from other orders of government. Providing counsel to the mayor in the

Alberta polling division into the largest public affairs research practice in the province.
In addition to political and public affairs based opinion research, Mr. Henry’s specialties included
brand, reputation and issues management, crisis communications and labour relations, message and
advertising testing and program evaluation. As the Alberta spokesperson for Ipsos-Reid, Mr. Henry
frequently appeared in newspaper, magazine, radio and television coverage of company research, and
as a political analyst.
Mr. Henry developed a taste for public opinion research in university. He received his Bachelor’s
Degree from the University of Lethbridge, and went on to graduate studies at the University of
Calgary specializing in Canadian and U.S. politics and political behavior. During graduate school,
Mr. Henry was also a Research Associate with the Canada West Foundation.
He has been a member of the Board of Directors of Tourism Calgary, and is an alumnus of Calgary’s
