2016 Annual Report
2Liza Maupin, CEO
It’s been a BIG year here at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada, and we are proud to continue serving children in Reno, Sparks, Sun Valley, North Valleys, and Carson City. Our volunteers provide hope and guidance to their Littles, which inspires them to reach for the stars and work towards goals they never thought possible. As you’ll see in this report, our programs produce results. In 2016, 86% of our age-eligible Little Brothers and Sisters graduated high school. That’s compared to just 65% of their similarly disadvantaged classmates who did not have a mentor. We thank you for your commitment to our local youth and the improvement of our community. We truly would not be able to do it without you, and together, we are making northern Nevada a better place.

Big Brother of the YearRon Anderson - Community-Based, 5 years
“Hanging out with Ron makes me feel safe, good about myself, special, wanted and important. He makes me want to be a better person. I learn a lot from him and we have good conversations. Ron is someone I trust and I know he will never judge me and always be there for me”. — Horacio,
Little Brother

Life-Changing Friendships Big Sister Lexi and Little Sister Concha
Match Length: 3 MonthsProgram Type: Community
On one of their outings, Lexi and Concha decided to paint mugs for each other and exchange them as Christmas presents.During a recent phone call with Conchas’ mother, Lexi was informed that Concha has not drank out of any other container since the mug was gifted to her.Concha then sent Lexi a list chronicling all of the drinks she had put in her new special mug. Sometimes, it’s the little things that show us how much we mean to someone else. Littles in our program look forward to the time they get to see their Bigs each week and treasure the activities they participate in together.

Big Brother Bo and Little Brother Jose
Match Length: 2 YearsProgram Type: Community
“When we meet each week, we do a variety of fun activities ranging from playing sports outside, going to the dog park with my dog Achilles, visiting the Discovery Museum and building snowmen.Being a Big is one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life. By being able to see your Little each week and make such an impact on a child’s life through playing games and staying consistent is truly amazing. It’s the little things in a kid’s life that can make a Big impact”.
