CONTEXTToachieveitsgoalofbecomingoneofthenation’stop-tier,publicplanningprogramsforundergraduateandgraduatestudy,theprogrammustadapttoanumberofdevelopmentsthatdefinethelandscapeinwhichwecurrentlyexist.Currentexternalandinternalenvironmentastheyrelatetoopportunitiesandthreats:DiscoveryThemesTheUniversity’sDiscoveryThemesencourageinterdisciplinaryresearchandteachingaroundfoodproductionandsecurity,energyandtheenvironment,healthandwellness,andthehumanitiesandthearts.Outofthesethemes,focusareashavearisen,including:translationaldataanalytics,sustainableandresilienteconomy,materialsandmanufacturingforsustainability,infectiondisease,thehumanitiesandthearts,initiativeforfoodandagriculturaltransformation,foodforhealth,andbraininjury.ThesethemesandfocusareascreateopportunitiesforCRPfacultywhohavestrengthsacrosstheareastocollaborateacrosstheuniversity.TheNationalAcademyofEngineering(NAE)GrandChallengesTherearefourteenGrandChallengescoveringfourinterdisciplinarythemes—Energy,Infrastructure,Environment,andHealth—thatwilldominatetheengineeringlandscapefortheforeseeablefuture.SolutionstomanyoftheseGrandChallengeslieintheinterfaceofdisciplinescreatingopportunitiesforplanningtointeractwiththeCollege.InclusiveExcellenceUniversityleadershiphasdefinedapathofinclusiveexcellencetoguideOSU’sdecision-makingandinvestments.Atthesametime,thedemographicsofthenationarechangingsothatoverthenext40years,theUSwillbecomeamajorityminoritynation.Theplanningfieldmustrespondtothechangingprioritiesthatthesedemographictransformationswillbring.GlobalCommoditizationofthePlanningDegreeWhiletheCRPdegreehastraditionallypreparedstudentsfordomesticpractice,thereisasignificantincreaseinplannersworkinginglobalpractices.Planningeducationneedstorespondbyprovidingeducationthatrespondstoglobalplanningchallenges.EconomicTurmoilTheUScontinuestorecoverfromitsmostdifficultrecessionsincetheGreatDepression.Sinceplanninghastraditionallybeendependentongovernmentforemploymentofitsgraduatesandresearchinvestments,thishasabroadimpactonplanningeducation.NationalReputationTheCityandRegionalPlanningmaster’sprogramisranked21stoverall,16thamongpublicinstitutions,and5thinthemid-westinthe2014PlanetizenGraduatePlanningRankings.CRP’sfacultyisthe18thmostcitedfacultyinNorthAmericain2015.

Areastobestrengthened:FacultyInvestmentTheadditionoftheundergraduateprogramsignificantlyexpandedthestudentbodyoverthelastfewyears.Atthesametime,agenerationoffacultyretirementsoccurred.Thereisaneedtorampuphiringtosupportboththebuildoutoftheundergraduateprogramandthecontinuedstrengthofourgraduateeducation.LimitedResourcesInspireProgramInnovationandAdvancementOverthelastfewyears,CRPhasreceivedanequitabledistributionofresourcesinternallytosupportfundingforstudentsandfaculty,engagementinoutstandingresearch,andthedeliveryoutstandingstudio-basedlearning.Atthesametime,resourcesgenerallyarenotgrowing;theprogrammustcontinuetoseekexternalresourcesthroughprograminnovationandadvancement.Recentsuccessesandotherstrengthsthattheplanningsectionwillbuildupon:SuccessfulrecentprogramhiresaresupportingthecontinuedexcellenceofCRP’soutstandingresearch,teachingthatemphasizestheapplicationofknowledgetopractice,andservice.Studentsandfacultycontinuetoreceivecollege,university,local,national,andinternationalrecognitionfortheirresearchandoutreach.Facultyareengagingincontinuedandflourishinginterdisciplinarycollaborations.TheundergraduateminorinCRPattractsthemoststudentsofanyminorintheKnowltonSchool.ThesectionhasitsownCityandRegionalPlanningAdvisoryCommittee,supportingcontinuedprograminnovationandadvancement.
