This Annual Report highlights the operational results and activities of The Burlington Performing Arts Centre in 2016 . The Centre’s activities for the 2016 fiscal year from January-December resulted in an operating deficit, however, we were able to fund the current year deficit and current capital commitments by way of prior year reserves .

The fall of 2016 was our busiest and most challenging to date . Our staff and volunteers rose to the challenge to ensure that we consistently delivered a positive experience to artists and patrons alike . Comparable to the fall, December 2016 featured our largest number of holiday offerings to date, with Christmas with Matt Dusk and Friends, three Nutcracker performances, A Next Generation Leahy Christmas, our Family Holiday Concert, and three Christmas Carol performances . Total attendance for all of our holiday performances met our expectations, ending the year on a high note .

Many impressive artists were featured on our stages in 2016, including Bruce Cockburn, Steven Wright, Hong Kong Ballet, David Myles, Burton Cummings, Carol Welsman, Gerry Dee, Tokyo Police Club, The Nylons, and Maceo Parker, among many more . The year also included productions by two local theatre groups . Tottering Biped Theatre presented Air in January, and KooGle Theatre Company presented The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in July .

When we launched our Education Outreach Program in 2011, we had a handful of schools attending our shows . We continued to build our program, and more and more teachers saw the value of what we created . Before we knew it our Education Outreach Program grew from less than 2,000 students a year attending to over 12,000 students and teachers walking through our theatre doors before the end of the 2016 school year – a remarkable growth .

Our Jazz on the Plaza in 2015 provided the community with four free evenings of live entertainment on our plaza . In 2016 this grew into Summer on the Plaza, featuring eleven free plaza performances for the community .

The number of Rental and Community Producers who use our venue increased in 2016, to a total of seventy-one . Community groups such as Burlington Student Theatre, Symphony on the Bay, Burlington Footnotes, Live and Local Music Series, and Harbourtown Sound continue to return year after year to use our beautiful facility .

We are proud to be able to contribute to Burlington’s growing reputation as a vibrant and thriving city, by bringing the best in performing arts to our stages and engaging the community with meaningful arts experiences .

We wish to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to The Centre’s continued success; to our dedicated staff, volunteers and Board of Directors, to the City of Burlington, to our generous donors and sponsors, and of course, to our audiences for sharing in our experiences that inspire . Together our belief in the value of the arts will continue to nurture the already flourishing cultural landscape of our community .

One hundred and fifty one citizens strong, our volunteer team has delivered first rate experiences to the thousands of men, women and children who have attended the Theatre in 2016 . Serving as ticket takers, ambassadors, ushers, coat check attendants, merchandise assistants, and much more, these volunteers logged over 13,500 hours .

Fifty-two of our current volunteers have been with us since our opening season and four of whom have individually dedicated more than 200 hours in 2016 alone . Refresher training was provided this past fall to our existing team, and we aim to expand our crew and diversity of roles this summer, recruiting another 30-50 volunteers . We look forward to recognizing and celebrating our team’s achievements in July at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Event .
