What is Robotics? FIRST = “For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”

FIRST is an organization that inspires students of all backgrounds to enter a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field and explore their passions. Teams work together to create robots that compete objectives and compete with other robots from all over the world.

FIRST hosts many STEM related programs for all age groups including: LEGO League, FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC).

EGR Robotics 5980 is a FRC team were students work together over a six week build season to design, prototype, build, and program a robot for the current year’s game. These tasks vary greatly from year to year, with parts of the tasks including stacking objects, shooting frisbees, and climbing walls.

These competitions inspire students to pursue jobs in STEM and business fields. Studies show students who participate are twice as likely to major in science or engineering degrees, and also improve on time management, conflict resolution, and communication skills.

About Our Program

East Grand Rapids High SchoolOur high school was founded in 1917 and has more national merit scholars than any other school of its size in the state of Michigan; the student body totals a little less than 1,000 students. East has been recognized as a school of excellence and is a leader in the state of Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP) scores. Therefore, the motto of our school is “A Tradition of Excellence.”

EGR Robotics 5980The Robotics team at East Grand Rapids completed its rookie season in 2016 and we learned a lot about teamwork, mechanical and electrical engineering, and programming in various languages. We started with a small team of 13 students, and are proud to have expanded the program to triple in size with almost half being female participants. EGR Robotics is particularly interested in community involvement, and has volunteered at many organizations including Habitat for Humanity, the Blandford Nature Center, and the elementary schools to stimulate young minds.

Competition Success EGR Robotics had a very successful first season. We were runner-up at our first competition, and semi-finalist at our second. At State Competition, we finished fifth out of over 400 teams in Michigan. This performance qualified us for the World Championship in St. Louis. Throughout the season, our efforts resulted in 8 awards: Rookie Inspiration Award, Rookie All Star Award, three Highest Rookie Seed Awards, two Excellence in Engineering Awards, and one for being a Finalist. This year, EGR Robotics hopes to excel again in competitions and student engagement, continuing our tradition of excellence.

SponsorshipWe Need Your Help

EGR Robotics requires funds to compete this season. Our fundraising goal for the season is over $30,000 so we greatly appreciate any donation you can make; every bit helps. These funds go towards robot parts, tools, and the costs of registration in events. Registration costs comprise $6,000 for two district events, $4,000 for the State Competition, and $5,000 for the World Championship.

Help can also be given in the form of equipment and mentors; we are in need of new tools and machines and we greatly benefit from the valuable knowledge of those with experience working in the industry.
