AccreditationStatementTheHealthInformationManagementbaccalaureatedegreeispendingaccreditationreviewbytheCommissiononAccreditationforHealthInformaticsandInformationManagementEducation(CAHIIM).
RegisteredHealthInformationAdministrator(RHIA)
RHIAsareskilledinthecollection,interpretation,analysisofpatientdata,andusingclassificationsystemsandmedicalterminologies.Additionally,theyreceivethetrainingnecessarytoassumemanagerialpositionsrelatedtothesefunctions.RHIAsinteractwithalllevelsofanorganization,oftenservingasacriticallinkbetweencareproviders,payers,andpatientsandmanagepatienthealthinformationandrecords,administercomputerinformationsystems,clinical,financial,legal,andadministrative.RHIAsenjoyjobplacementsinabroadrangeofsettingsthatspanthecontinuumofhealthcareincludingoffice-basedphysicianpractices,nursinghomes,homehealthagencies,mentalhealthfacilities,andpublichealthagencies.ThegrowthofmanagedcarehascreatedadditionaljobopportunitiesinHMOs,PPOs,insurancecompanies,HIEs,andeducation.ProspectsareespeciallystronginthesesettingsforRHIAswhopossessadvanceddegreesinbusinessorhealthadministration.Atthepresenttime,thereisagrowingmarketintheworkplaceforHIMprofessionals.AccordingtotheBureauofLaborStatistics(BLS),employmentofhealthinformationmanagementprofessionalsisexpectedtoincreaseby22percent,muchfasterthantheaverageforalloccupationsthrough2022.“Thedemandforhealthservicesisexpectedtoincreaseasthepopulationages.Anagingpopulationwillneedmoremedicaltests,treatments,andprocedures.Thiswillmeanmoreclaimsforreimbursementfrominsurancecompanies.Additionalrecords,coupledwithwidespreaduseofelectronichealthrecords(EHRs)byalltypesofhealthcareproviders,couldleadtoanincreasedneedfortechnicianstoorganizeandmanagetheassociatedinformationinallareasofthehealthcareindustry.”BureauofLaborStatistics,U.S.DepartmentofLabor,OccupationalOutlookHandbook,2014-15Edition,MedicalRecordsandHealthInformationTechnicians,ontheInternetathttp://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/medical-records-and-health-information-technicians.htm(visitedMay22,2015).

AcademicReviewPolicy
Beginningwiththefallsemester2002,thefollowingsystemhasbeenusedtoevaluatetheacademicprogressofallundergraduatestudents.Usingeitherthenarrativeorthetablebelow,studentscanchecktheircreditsearned,cumulativegradepointaverage

(GPA),andcurrentGPAtoreadilydeterminetheiracademicstanding.Thetablebelowlistssemesterhoursearned(includinghoursintransfer)andtheminimumGPAforgoodstanding,probation,jeopardyofdismissal,anddismissal.
1.GoodStanding:EachstudentmusthaveacumulativeGPAofa2.000orhighertobeingoodstanding.2.AcademicProbation:AfreshmanwithacumulativeGPAbetween1.501and1.999willbeplacedonprobation.AsophomorewithacumulativeGPAbetween1.801and1.999willbeplacedonprobation.3.JeopardyofDismissal:AfreshmanwhosecumulativeGPAis1.500orlowerandasophomorewhosecumulativeGPAis1.800orlowerwillbeplacedinjeopardyofdismissal.JuniorsandseniorswhosecumulativeGPAisbelow2.000willbeplacedinjeopardyofdismissal.4.Dismissal:StudentsinjeopardyofdismissalhaveonesemestertoraisetheircumulativeGPAabovethedismissallevel.Ifthestudent’scumulativeGPAdoesnotriseabovethedismissallevelandifthecurrentsemesterGPAislessthana2.500,thestudentwillbedismissed.5.ReadmissionFollowingDismissal:Adismissedstudentmayapplyforreadmissionafteraperiodofonecalendaryear.Evidenceofmaturityandimprovedattitudetowardacademicsandthewrittensupportofthestudent’sacademicadvisormustaccompanytheapplicationforreadmission.ThePetitiontoReturnformandsupportingdocumentationmustbesubmittedtotheregistrarnotlessthan10daysbeforethefirstdayofclassesforthesemesterofintendedreturn.PetitionsarereviewedbytheAcademicReviewCommitteeonacontinualbasis.Approvalofapetitionallowsthestudenttoenrollonaconditionalbasis,asstipulatedbythecommittee.Theacademicstandingforareadmittedstudentwillbejeopardyofdismissal.TheseproceduresapplytostudentswhohavemorerecentlyattendedGrandValley,withinfiveyears,orstudentswhopreviouslyattendedGrandValley,fiveormoreyearspast.6.DueProcessThroughAppeal:Ifastudentbelievesthathisorheracademicstatusisinerror,heorshemaysubmitawrittenappealincludingwrittensupportofhisorheracademicadvisortotheAcademicReviewCommittee,c/otheregistrar.Itisinthestudent’sinteresttoappealimmediatelyifheorsheintendstodoso,butastudentmaydosonolaterthanthefirstclassdayofthesubsequentsemester.AllappealswillbeconsideredbytheAcademicReviewCommittee.Takenfromhttp://catalog.gvsu.edu/content.php?catoid=40&navoid=1511#academic_review

ApplicationforDegreeCompletion
GrandValleyStateUniversityawardsbaccalaureate,master’sanddoctoraldegreesthreetimeseachyear:attheconclusionofthefallsemester(December),attheconclusionofthewintersemester(April),andattheconclusionofthespring/summersession(August).DegreecandidatesmustnotifytheregistraroftheirintentiontograduatebycompletingtheapplicationfordegreeformandsubmittingittotheStudentAssistanceCenterpriortothesemesterofgraduation.Degreecandidateswillbeallowed30daysafterthelastdayofthesemesterorsessiontocompleteallrequirementsandprovideevidenceofsatisfactorycompletiontotheregistrar.Nodegreewillbeawardeduntilalltemporarygradesareremoved.Afterthe30-daydeadline,allremainingcandidateswillbedroppedfromcandidacystatus,andthosestudentsmustreapplyforsomesubsequentdegreedate.ThecandidacydeadlineforeachsemesterislistedinthescheduleofclassesontheWeb.Exceptionstothispolicywillbebasedsolelyonextenuatingcircumstancesbeyondthecontrolofthestudent.Anyrequestforanexceptionmustbemadeinwritingtotheregistrar.

ClassAttendance
AtGrandValley,regularclassattendanceisconsideredanessentialpartofthestudents’educationalexperienceandarequirementforanadequateevaluationofstudentacademicprogress.Itisbelievedthatcollegestudents,asmatureindividuals,willrecognizetheneedforregularclassattendanceandwillcomplywiththisrequirement.Attendancepoliciesregardingeachcoursewillbeoutlinedinthecoursesyllabusprovidedbytheindividualinstructors.
CollegeLevelExaminationProgram(CLEP)TestCreditisgrantedforsubjectexaminationsofferedbyCLEP;however,nocreditisgrantedfortheCLEPgeneralexaminations.RequiredminimumscoresareavailableonrequestfromtheAdmissionsOfficeortheStudentAssistanceCenter.NativespeakersofalanguageotherthanEnglishwillnotbegrantedCLEPorAPexamcreditforthatlanguage.

StudentAcademicGrievanceProcedures
