Section One: Chapter Affiliation Information

TSA Affiliation Requires On-line Affiliation

The on-line system will open in August and ready to accept your chapter affiliation! AFFILIATION IS NOT COMPLETE UNTIL PAYMENT IS PROCESSED BY NATIONAL TSA. (Payment may be made with a credit card or an approved/signed Purchase Order followed by

a check.)

TSA offers three curriculum- integrated membership programs. Each chapter chooses the program that works best for them.

Red Chapter Affiliation Program (Red CAP) A chapter affiliates up to ten members by paying a flat fee (additional members may be added during the year for a fee). The membership fee for Red CAP is $100 at the national level plus $60 state dues.

White Chapter Affiliation Program (White CAP) A chapter affiliates eleven or more members by paying a per member White CAP fee for state and national dues. The membership fee for White CAP is $10 per member at the national level plus $6.00 state dues.

Blue Chapter Affiliation Program (Blue CAP) A chapter affiliates an unlimited number of members in a school for a flat fee (typically effective when there are more than 25 members). This option is popular in chapters where students rotate through a STEM class for a portion of the year to enable all students to be members. The membership fee for Blue CAP is $350 at the national level plus state dues.

Advisor Fee: $10.00 When to affiliate: We encourage you to affiliate early so that you can receive your new “Total TSA” which includes the current Competitive Events Guide, membership benefits and leadership activities and lessons. Please know though you may affiliate your chapter or add additional members to your roster at any time during the year.

Section One: Chapter Affiliation Information continued ON-LINE AFFILIATION: To affiliate a chapter, go to the National TSA website at www.tsaweb.org and then click on “Join TSA or Manage My TSA.” You will be lead through the on-line affiliation process. Instructions can be found - http://www.registermychapter.com/tsa/nat/AffHelp.aspx. When you affiliate you will receive a free copy of the Total TSA Package which includes:

a. Membership Materials: The Membership Materials section provides guidelines for promoting, running and maintaining your chapter. It also includes chapter organization tips, promotional and marketing ideas, and descriptions of TSA's awards and recognitions. b. Competitive Events: TSA offers its members challenging technology and leadership competitions. TSA's competitive events are reviewed and revised every two years by the Competition Regulations Committee (CRC), a standing group of technology educators with hands-on classroom experience. The Competitive Events portion of TOTAL TSA presents guidelines for all national TSA conference competitions, as well as a comprehensive view of each event's connection to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) standards. Additionally, leadership skills and career choices are featured for each event. Relevant for local state and national competitions, the competitive events materials provide an excellent motivational tool for curricular activities in the classroom. c. Leadership Lessons: Leadership is for all TSA members. By learning leadership skills such as creative and critical thinking, communication, decision making, ethics, self-esteem, problem solving and teamwork, students are empowered for success in their competitions, classes and future careers. The contents of the Leadership Lessons section will help advisors enhance chapter dynamics and broaden the learning that takes place when students participate in TSA competitive events. The lessons can be integrated into both the technology education curriculum and the TSA

MEMBERSHIP DUES. TSA has unified membership. This means no one may be a member of TSA, or participate in TSA activities and conferences, without affiliating at the local, state and national level. Be sure to include dues for advisors and alumni. All students in your school who are taking or have taken a Technology Education course are eligible for membership.

Page 4: 2016 - 2017 Back to School and Affiliation Packet Table of Contents

Section One: Chapter Affiliation Information continued AFFILIATION PLAN OPTIONS: TSA offers three curriculum- integrated membership programs. Each chapter chooses the program that works best for them. Red Chapter Affiliation Program (Red CAP) A chapter affiliates ten (10) members by paying a flat fee (additional members may be added during the year for a fee). The membership fee for Red CAP is $100 at the national level plus $50 state dues. [Total: $160.00] White Chapter Affiliation Program (White CAP) A chapter affiliates eleven or more members by paying a per member fee for state and national dues. The membership fee for White CAP is $10 per member at the national level plus $5 state dues. [Total: $16 each] Blue Chapter Affiliation Program (Blue CAP) A chapter affiliates an unlimited number of members in a Middle School or High School Technology and/or Engineering Program for one flat fee (typically cost effective when there are more than 22 or more chapter members). This option is popular in chapters where students rotate through a STEM class for a portion of the year, like a Middle School, to enable all students to be members, and or large High School Chapters. The membership fee for Blue CAP is $350 at the national level and no state dues. [Total $350.00] *NC TSA RULE: When you upload your roster, you should list all students that are enrolled in the Technology and/or Engineering related classes offered at your school during the entire year, including all students in multi-teacher programs. In addition you also count the members of TSA that are not currently enrolled in those classes. The chapter affiliation program you choose must be the same at the state and national level. If your chapter originally selected the Red CAP and grows beyond that plan you become White CAP chapters automatically when they affiliate eleven or more members. Red CAP or White CAP chapters may convert to Blue CAP at any time. TSA operates under a unified dues policy, whereby members must affiliate and pay applicable dues at the local, state and national level. REVIVING A DORMANT CHAPTER: Often there are personnel changes at schools that cause the TSA Chapter at that school to disband or simply shut down due to a lack of a chapter sponsor or engineering & technology education program. TSA dues are based on annual membership dues payments. In cases where there has been a lapse in membership for a year or more, and the school wants to affiliate once again, the chapter sponsor should contact the National TSA Office and ask for Suzy Orr. Her email is [email protected] . She is The National TSA representative in charge of membership services. Give her the new information.

Page 5: 2016 - 2017 Back to School and Affiliation Packet Table of Contents

Section One: Chapter Affiliation Information continued A username and password will be issued to the new advisor for that school. Contact the Jerianne Taylor Executive Director for assistance as well: [email protected] . (There is no additional fee for re-affiliating other than the normal annual affiliation dues.) The absolute membership deadline is March 1, 2017 for a member to be able to participate at the State Conference. The deadlines reflect the necessary turn-around time between adding a new name to your roster and it being posted on the National TSA Database, which is used to populate our NCTSA Event Management System. If you have any problems or questions, please contact Jerianne Taylor, State Executive Director at 336-692-4794 or [email protected]. CHAPTERS OWING OUTSTANDING DEBTS. If a chapter has a delinquent debt from previous events/conferences, that chapter will not be able to register for future events/conferences until the outstanding debt has been paid or arrangements with GA TSA have been made and approved by the NC TSA Board of Directors. Does your school qualify for the National TSA Champion Fund?

The Champion Fund is a one-time Opportunity for Free TSA Membership

The Technology Student Association (TSA) currently has funds available for eligible schools to pay for TSA membership (ten students and one advisor) for one year. The Champion Fund is made available through donations from individuals, schools, and businesses to provide membership funds to chapters that qualify. See the Champion

Fund Section for further information.

Section Two: NC TSA Policies Regarding Payments, Collections, Registration

Deadlines, etc. Affiliation Dues Affiliation and affiliation payment(s) are made directly to National Technology Student Association. Do not send affiliation payments to NC TSA. State Conferences Registration Payments NC TSA provides four in-state conferences during the school year. Each has posted registration and general conference information, what is included with the registration fee and deadlines prior to each conference. Registration is done via our registermychapter.com site or google forms. An invoice is automatically generated upon submission of state conference registration. The deadline is clearly stated. Advisors may make changes up to the deadline and after the deadline passes, whatever has been entered at that point is automatically submitted. Conference space and purchases are made in good faith by NC TSA for all who are registered. Therefore, chapters are responsible for making full payment for the names that appear on the registration site after that date, whether they attend the specific conference or not. Unless alternate arrangements have been made in writing with the Executive Director, payment of registration is expected to be received prior to the conference by way of the following address: NC TSA c/o Dr. Jerianne Taylor 292 Ridgefield Road Boone, North Carolina 28607 Do not send NC TSA Conference Registration payments to National TSA. The only conference payments that will be made to National TSA is for the National Conference. Delinquent Accounts Schools that are delinquent on previous invoices may not be allowed to affiliate or register for the next conference until full payment has been received for the amount owed from the previous conference. Further punitive action will be determined by the NC TSA Board of Directors. Policy enforcement ordered by the NC TSA Board of Directors – March 2014.

Section Nine: 2016-2017 Annual Events and Conferences NC TSA has a fun and busy year planned. Right at the start, NCTSA is working to provide

meaningful and memorable experiences for its members!

First, bring your local officer team to the NC Fall Leadership Rally. This conference is a chance for your students to take ownership of their chapter and annual program of work (POW). Aside from creating and planning a detailed POW chapters will participate in teambuilding exercises. The Rally is a great opportunity for the local officer team to bond and take their leadership experiences back with them to their local school. For more information and registration details please see Section Eight and look for information about the event on our website.

NC TSA's Regional Conference program of leadership development and competitive events provide students opportunities beyond the traditional classroom/laboratory setting. Held in various locations across the state in February, our Competitive Events Program provides a platform for our student members to display the aptitudes, interests, and talents gained through our Technology – Related Courses. Chapters prepare for the state conference and gain valuable feedback from the judges. In addition, medals are awarded for each of the events. Find details and registration information at: http://nctsa.org/nc-regionals/ .

NC TSA's Annual State Conference program of leadership development and competitive events provide students opportunities beyond the traditional classroom/laboratory setting. Held in April at Sheraton Four Seasons in Greensboro, our Competitive Events Program provides a

platform for our student members to display the aptitudes, interests, and talents gained through our Technology –Related Courses. Chapters go for individual event trophies as well as the overall Outstanding Chapter Title. Find details and registration information at: http://nctsa.org/nc-states/ TSA members throughout the nation all agree that for them, the highlight of the school year is unquestionably, the annual National Technology Student Association Conference. This culminating event is packed with competitive events and challenging activities that foster personal growth and leadership development in addition to a chance to exhibit talents and win recognition at the national level. Held in late June, the TSA National Conferences which take place in a different city around the country each year. Each year TSA members compete against students from across the USA and even some international chapters as well as experience many more opportunities at the national conference. http://www.tsaweb.org/

In addition to the Conference opportunities NCTSA has to offer, our membership also has other Signature Events to choose from to enrich their learning experience and challenge their minds.

The TSA VEX Robotics Competition engages middle and high school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education through an exciting, head-to-head robotics contest that captures student attention and both enhances—and allows them to use—their skills in STEM areas. In addition, the competition complements the existing technology-related competitive

events offered by TSA at both levels of instruction. Registered VEX teams are eligible to complete in nationwide VEX Qualifying Events and potentially qualify teams for the VEX World Championships. http://www.robotevents.com/ TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) is an annual competition for middle and high school students designed to help them discover their potential for engineering. Using science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and 21st century learning skills, students work collaboratively to problem solve real-world engineering challenges. The TEAMS competition is based on annual theme. http://teams.tsaweb.org/

The Verizon Innovative App Challenge is a creative competition for middle and high school students who develop an original mobile app concept that incorporates STEM and addresses a real need or problem in their school or community. Teams submit their design concepts online through a three-minute video and an essay. "Best in State" teams will be selected and recognized. Winning teams will receive mobile devices, thousands in cash for the schools, and the opportunity to be coached by MIT Media Lab professionals to build their app and bring it to Google Play store. The winning

students retain intellectual property rights to their app. For more information, http://appchallenge.tsaweb.org/ Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) is a free educational program for 5th through 8th grade students where students design, build and race solar powered cars using hands-on engineering skills and principles of science and math. Students develop teamwork and problem solving abilities, investigate environmental issues, and gain hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills to create the fastest, most interesting, and best crafted vehicle possible. JSS is designed to support the instruction of STEM in categories such as alternative fuels, engineering design, and aerodynamics. Students who are part of a registered Technology Student Association (TSA) chapter or who compete at an approved Army host site are eligible to compete in JSS. Teams must follow the official TSA middle school competition rules when competing in JSS. For more information, http://www.usaeop.com/programs/competitions/jss/

Section Ten: National TSA Week

Page 33: 2016 - 2017 Back to School and Affiliation Packet Table of Contents

Start TSA Week off with a bang by attending the Fall Leadership Rally at McDougle Middle School. Plan a community event. This is an excellent time to make the community and business leaders in your community aware of your TSA chapter. With the leadership of your chapter officers, you may wish to:

Invite local business/community/industry leaders to a chapter meeting or school assembly to discuss technology in the workplace and what lies ahead for technology in the 19th century.

Visit local business and industry to learn first-hand how technology is applied.

Host a community open-house after school to showcase chapter activities. Invite parents, community leaders, business and industry representatives, and neighboring schools.

Visit a local elementary school and offer to assist them with a technology activity.

Write an article about your chapter and the importance of technology for your local or school newspaper. Include a group picture of your TSA chapter.

Set up an information booth about TSA and encourage others to join.

Hang posters and banners about TSA Week in your school.

Wear TSA t-shirts or other attire to publicize your chapter.

Host an appreciation luncheon for teachers, members, and business leaders who make your chapter the success it is.

Formally recognize the principal of your school with certificate (enclosed, if you chose a free principal membership on your affiliation form). Principals are vital in supporting your TSA chapter. A formal presentation, honoring your principal as an honorary member of TSA, and reading the enclosed proclamation will help solidify your TSA chapter within the school. Plan to have your chapter officers do this at a school assembly or chapter meeting. Invite local business, community, and industry leaders to attend the presentation. Send press releases to local newspapers, radio, and television stations letting them know of your upcoming event. Use this sample press release. Make sure to customize it with your chapter's name and other pertinent information (i.e., if your chapter invites a guest speaker, make sure to note who is participating, when and where it is taking place, etc.) Invite the press to attend any events you plan during the week and let them know who to contact for more information. Send all participants a formal, written "thank you" after the event. A certificate of appreciation that you may use or customize is enclosed. Send news and/or pictures of what your chapter did for TSA Week to NC TSA – [email protected] and the National Technology Student Association, 1914 Association Drive, Reston, VA 20191-1540. All submissions become the property of NC TSA/TSA and may be used in NC TSA/TSA publications or promotional displays.

North Carolina TS A White Star Chapter How to become a White Star Chapter . . . There are 2 ways Locate a prospective TSA chapter - a group of technology students in your community or state - which has not yet organized for TSA membership. Talk to their teacher about TSA. Explain what TSA is, how a chapter works and how it will benefit the students. Describe your own activities as a TSA chapter. Arrange to hold an organizational program for new students. When the new chapter organizes as a result of your efforts they need to contact Executive Director, Jerianne Taylor, by e-mail [email protected] in order for you to receive credit. In order to receive recognition at the State Conference you must complete the White Star Application online and submit it by December 1, 2016 to the NCTSA office. A scanned e-mailed copy of the signed original is acceptable. or Increase your CAP membership by 20%. The final membership report from national TSA for the preceding year will be used to verify increases. Why should yours be a White Star Chapter? Satisfaction . . . You’ll be helping other technology education students to discover the fun and excitement of TSA membership. Accomplishment . . . By starting new chapters, you’ve succeeded in spreading the word about TSA. And for your accomplishments, you’ll receive recognition at the Fall TSA Conference. Awards . . . Once you do start new chapters, you’ll be eligible to receive a certificate for your chapter and white star plaque for your school Note: This is a NC TSA awards program, not a national awards program.

TSA ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM (Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards)

The Technology Student Association (TSA) Achievement Program (Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards) is designed to motivate and recognize student members for high effort in a school's technology education program. The program is:

• an opportunity for every TSA member to strive and receive recognition for accomplishments.

• designed to encourage excellence in the areas of leadership development, understanding technology, school/community service, and career/personal planning.

• planned so the highest awards acknowledge outstanding individual performance. This noncompetitive, self-initiated program encourages students to develop appropriate attitudes and increase their knowledge and skills through involvement in technology education programs and activities. The goals of the TSA Achievement Program are to

• inspire TSA members to attain the high goals and ideals of TSA. • promote active participation at the school, community, state, and national levels. • provide opportunities that assist students in making informed and meaningful career

and educational choices. • develop leadership and team participation abilities. • recognize participation in technology education programs and TSA.

Levels of Achievement The TSA Achievement Program is composed of three levels of achievement: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Each student begins at the Bronze level. When the required activities at the Bronze level are completed, s/he is eligible for the appropriate award and the opportunity to work toward achieving the Silver level. Eventually, s/he may work towards achieving the Gold level. National TSA recommends working on the Achievement Program during a two-year period. It is suggested that students should strive to achieve the Bronze and Silver Awards in one school year, and the Gold Award during the following school year. This time frame is suggested to give the appropriate amount of time and effort to the projects/steps that are required to achieve each level and to maximize the learning experience.

Page 39: 2016 - 2017 Back to School and Affiliation Packet Table of Contents

TSA ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM (Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards)

Rules for Student Members 1. To participate in the TSA Achievement Program, a student must be an active member in an affiliated, local TSA chapter. 2. The student may choose from the activities under the four achievement categories: Leadership Development - (LD); Understanding Technology - (UT); School/Community Service-(SC); and Career/Personal Planning (CP). These activities and their point value are listed and can be tracked on the Activity Category Forms. 3. When a student has accumulated a minimum of 20 points in each achievement category and an additional 20 points from any or all of the categories (100 points total) s/he is eligible to complete and submit the Activity Resume. A total of 100 points is required to attain each level of achievement – Gold, Silver or Bronze. 4. Points are accumulated from one award level to the next. For example, points earned for the bronze award level count toward the silver award level and points earned for the bronze and silver award levels count towards the gold award level. All points earned, beginning with the bronze award must be listed on the Activity Resume each time the resume is submitted for a new level. Points may not be claimed for activities completed prior to TSA membership. Each activity may be claimed only once, unless otherwise indicated. 5. Once the student completes all the activities needed for the appropriate level, the student completes the Activity Resume and Submission Form, prints them out and turns them in to the chapter vice president for signature. (Note: keep a copy for your records and/or the next award level) 6. The Activity Resume and Submission Form must be completed in their entirety for the award level you are seeking. This includes dates, activity codes, point values, vice president’s initials and all required signatures. 7. The chapter advisor then verifies successful completion of the activities by signing the Activity Submission Form and submitting both the Activity Submission Form and Activity Resume to the state advisor. 8. Students are encouraged to retain a copy of all forms for their records. 9. The local TSA chapter vice president retains a copy of each student’s Activity Submission Form and Activity Resume for chapter records. 10. The TSA state advisor verifies student’s paperwork and retains a copy of both forms for state files. No forms are submitted to the national TSA.

TSA ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM (Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards)

Award Pins Students who successfully complete the Activity Resume (including approval by the state advisor), will be recognized through the presentation of a bronze or silver pin through their state office. Those students who successfully complete the gold level will be recognized at the national conference. Awards Presentation Bronze Awards Bronze Awards are presented at the local TSA chapter or district level at special awards assemblies, awards banquets, special TSA banquets, etc. Silver Awards Silver Awards are presented at a special presentation session at TSA state conferences. Gold Awards Gold Awards are presented at the national TSA conference in one of the general sessions. Fees When submitting an Achievement Program Activity Resume for a Gold level award to the state advisor, each student must include a $5 fee to cover the cost of materials (award pin) and processing. State advisors forward this fee and the list of Gold Award recipients to national TSA through the online form provided on the state advisor webpage.
