THE FOUNDING OF

THE DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY

INTERNATIONAL

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was founded May 11, 1929, at the Faculty Women’s Club at the University of Texas, Austin, Texas.

Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, member of the faculty of the University of Texas and a former State Superintendent of Public Instruction, conceived the idea of

an honorary organization for women educators and selected eleven other Texas women to help her found The Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

The founders believed that there was need of an organization in which women educators of all types—rural and urban teachers; preschool, elementary, high school, and university teachers; librarians; school

administrators; supervisors—might be united for efforts toward better professional preparation, fairer recognition of women’s work in the teaching profession and more scholarships for those who need aid in improving their

professional preparation.

OUR NATIONAL FOUNDERS

(PRAYER)

Grant us, O God, the courage that our Founders must have possessed to face new days and new ways; Grant that we may meet new perils without fear; grant us humility of heart that greatness of spirit may be ours; grant us that open mindedness that seeks and teaches truth; give us fairness of mind and sympathy of heart that me may be just. Grant us the will to believe; the faith to endure; the heart to cherish all those things which we hold dear so that in seeking these things we may be honoring our Founders and in turn honoring thee.

ALPHA STATE TEXAS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

What is ASTEF?

ASTEF is a 501(c )(3) public charity organized for the following purposes:

To provide funding for activities that support professional and personal growth of women educators in Texas, and

To promote educational excellence for Texas students.

ASTEF is the fundraising entity supporting the Texas State Organization of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Who runs ASTEF?

All members of the Texas State Organization of Delta Kappa Gamma are members of ASTEF. The Annual Meeting of members is held during the TSO Convention.

ASTEF is managed by a Board of Directors elected by the members. The 2015-2017 Board consists of 23 members. The TSO President, Scholarship Chair and Leadership Seminar Chair all serve as ex-officio members of the ASTEF Board. Officers are elected by the Board.

What does ASTEF do?

ASTEF manages three funds: Scholarship, Leadership, and Projects.

Scholarship funds scholarships and lifelong learning opportunities.

Leadership provides leadership training through Leadership Seminars and sponsored speakers.

Projects provides stipends for chapter projects and supports other educational endeavors that benefit Texas students and educators.

In the four years since its inception, ASTEF has awarded $36,000 in project stipends for 45 chapter projects such as Kids Kubbies, Supporting Early-Career Educators, All Hands on Deck for Hillier, and The Buddy Bench.

How can members and chapters support ASTEF?

Contribute to ASTEF. Interactive contribution forms are available online. Contributions may be made in honor or in memory of someone, and all individual contributions are tax deductible.

Participate in ASTEF fundraising activities, such as cruises, Road Scholar programs, and raffles.

Apply for a state scholarship; encourage Aspiring Educators to apply for funding; participate in leadership events sponsored by ASTEF; apply for a chapter project stipend. The next application deadline is April 1, 2016.

DKG Gamma Zeta Recruitment Grant

Members of Gamma Zeta provide one or more scholarship grants annually to deserving teacher preparation students at Tarleton State University in Erath County. Funds to support the grants come from a variety of fundraising activities including our Half and Half Salad suppers, raffles, cookbook sales, and Book Review/Tasting Tea event for community women.

The Gamma Zeta Annual Project: 2016-2017

E.N.T.E.R.

Encouraging New Teachers, Enhancing Results

Throughout the school year members will visit, call, send cards, give gifts, e-mail encouragement, and be a listening ear to six brand new women teachers of Stephenville ISD. This will be a support system throughout the year in which all members will participate through donations and/or personal contact with the new teachers. We begin the year by meeting with them in August at their new teacher’s meeting, giving them a $25 Walmart gift card, snacks and other items in a special container that includes inspirational material, a card information of all of our meetings and programs, and the DKG brochure. Each month members bring items for a special goody bag that is delivered to their campuses with a card. In addition, our corresponding secretary will send a card of encouragement to their home address each month. For a very personal contact a Gamma Zeta member is assigned as their sponsor and will bring the goody bag to their new teacher monthly. One time during the year, the sponsor will try to meet with the new teacher in their classrooms during their lunch break, providing a lunch and visiting during that time. The new teachers are honored at the Christmas meeting/party and given special gifts. In the spring we include a gift card to a restaurant around the time of STAAR testing. They are invited to all of our meetings.

COLLECT

Give us. O Lord, a realization of what our organization stands for.

With its high ideals always before us, may our faith and courage never weaken.

Grant that we may be steadfast in our purposes as we endeavor to meet the responsibilities and obligations set before us.

Help us to be truly loyal, one to another, and may we strive to become more worthy members

of our profession.

And as we pledge anew our services to our noble cause, may unity and cooperation continue to the end.

THE DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SONG

Women teachers to the calling Firmly rally, never falling

Duty Ne’er upon us palling Staunch, courageous, we!

Loyalty and trust e’re heeding Mindful of our sisters needing

Aid and guidance from those leading, Helpful may we be!

To Delta Kappa Gamma Faith we pledge forever!

Hand in hand, our loyal band, Forward! Moving ever!

Onward ‘tis our sisters need us,

Courage, Faith, and Honor lead us, Wrongs in truth and justice heed us!

Firmly shall we stand!

Guardians of the faith yet sleeping, For our sisters watch e’re keeping Deeds of others now we’re reaping

We for others stand!

To us pioneers have given; We return their gifts to heaven; Work for others is the leaven,

That inspires our band!

Oh Delta Kappa Gamma In thy fold we gather!

Unity and Liberty Shall be our watchwords ever!

Education e’re we’ll further

Each is bound to each as brother; With this faith in one another

We shall win, for aye! Annie Web Blanton and Cora M. Martin
