40 2016 LoTRDC Calendar

The 2015 season was by far the most successful to date for both the FIA-approved Lotus Cup Europe and the Lotus Cup UK Speed Championship.

Lotus Cup Europe took on the biggest calendar in its history with no fewer than 15 rounds. Following the club’s investment in a race support truck we were able to provide full TV coverage of LCE for the first time with seven one-hour shows being broadcast throughout Europe. In addition to these programmes, all three races at Le Mans were broadcast live on TV and a number of internet channels. The truck also provided a much improved hospitality area from which we ran a series of hugely popular theme nights throughout the season.

On track, John Rasse was crowned overall Lotus Cup Europe champion after a near-perfect season with his new Elise Cup R while all four classes were represented in the overall top four standings.

The Lotus Cup UK Speed Championship competitors also enjoyed a fantastic season. Over 40 drivers took part in a title battle that went right down to the wire with half a dozen in with a chance of success at the Snetterton finale. It was so close that LoTRDC’s chairman, Jez Braker headed to the event leading overall, only to finish third behind eventual champion Tony Pearman and runner-up Rob Clark. Just 10 points separated the top five, three of whom represented the SuperSport class, including outgoing champion Xavier Brooke.

Of course it would not be possible for any of us to compete without the hard work of LoTRDC’s team of volunteers and the tireless efforts of marshals throughout the continent, and we are hugely grateful for their contribution.

In 2016 Lotus Cup Europe will again visit some of Europe’s best venues, including Le Mans, Spa Francorchamps and Silverstone. Once again the calendar features several prestigious meetings, starting with the Jim Clark Revival weekend at Hockenheim in April. The championship then heads to France, for its first ever visit to Paul Ricard and the first of three events supporting the popular FIA European Truck Racing Championship. We then visit Silverstone for the first time in June for MG live. The summer schedule includes a return to Spa-Francorchamps in July and Brands Hatch in August, with a second Belgian event in September. This fixture will coincide with two consecutive Truck Racing events, and the FIA Truck Grand Prix at Zolder will be followed by a triple-header in front of the huge crowd at the Le Mans 24 Heures Camions in October.

The Speed Championship will again visit sprint venues around the UK, including a brace of visits to Hethel – the home of Lotus. The championship will also make its debut at the country’s two most famous circuits with a June visit to Silverstone followed later in the year by the season finale at Brands Hatch. Keep an eye out for Karen’s great write ups during the season.

You can find out about both championships within this brochure, and whilst we hope it answers most of your questions, we are always happy to help with any further queries you may have. We look forward to welcoming you to our events this season!

www.lotrdc.com

Lotus Cup Europe, now in its Eleventh year, was set up as a direct response to customer and Lotus dealer interest in a fun but professionally run motor sport series in Europe. During that time it has attracted many competitors from all over the continent. In 2009, prompted by the success of the Lotus on Track Elise Trophy, LoTRDC were given control of the series by Lotus Cars, and grids immediately thrived. Since then many more drivers have joined from across the continent, all united by their enthusiasm for the marque. In 2013 Lotus Cup Europe gained FIA approval, becoming an FIA International Series. In addition to enjoying similar status to prestigious series

such as GP2 and DTM, it ran as a championship for the first time. This builds on a tradition that has seen races appear on the support bill to some of the continent’s biggest motor sport events. The championship has its own hour long TV Programme that is broadcast throughout Europe on Motors TV. All seven rounds are fully covered with programmes loaded to Motuls YouTube channel once broadcast.Lotus Cup Europe enjoys unrivalled support from the Lotus community, many of whom can be found at events. The championship is active on social media with well over 40,000 facebook followers and received over 5 million views and 1/4 million likes in the last full year.

Competitors are assured maximum time on track during events, and many of these open with a test day, for which drivers are welcome to enter. Race weekends start with a free practice session, and this is followed by 30 minutes of qualifying. There are two half-hour races, with both standing and rolling starts employed.Lotus Cup Europe receives support from Group Lotus in terms of marketing and technical policing. There is a dedicated hospitality unit, where competitors can go for help and advice throughout the weekend. It also provides a social hub, including catering facilities, that has proved as important amongst the drivers as the competition itself.Entries are split into four classes: V6 Cup - for the Exige V6 Cup and Evora GT4. 2-Eleven – for the four-cylinder supercharged open-top 2-Eleven. Production - for normally aspirated Elises and Exiges. Lotus Open – for four-cylinder Exige Cup cars, and the old invitation class for Lotus cars that are not eligible for the above categories. Open to Exige, Elise and the 340R.Championship points are scored according to class position, with bonus points added for the number of cars starting races in each class, therefore, drivers from all four classes have an equal chance of competing for the overall title. John Rasse won the 2015 championship whilst

competing in the Production class while Jérémy Lourenco won the 2014 championship with a 2-Eleven.There will be an extra race at the season’s final round at Le Mans. The series will support the popular 24 Heures Camions event, which attracts a huge crowd to the famous French circuit. Double points will be awarded in the final race of the three. We’re certain to be assured that the overall and class championships will go right down to the wire as it did in 2015.In addition to Le Mans, Lotus Cup Europe visits many of the continent’s finest circuits, with events taking place on classic Grand Prix venues including Spa-Francorchamps and Zolder in Belgium, Paul Ricard in France, Silverstone GP & Brands Hatch GP in the UK and Hockenheim in Germany. All rounds support major European race meetings, including the Jim Clark Revival / Hockenheim Historic, Grand Prix Camions at Paul Ricard, MG Live – the Worlds largest MG event, Fun Cup 25 Hours and Belgian FIA Truck Grand Prix as well as the 24 Heures Camions. The championship is open to drivers at all levels of experience, provided that they hold an International D licence or higher. Whilst the series has grown hugely since its inception a decade ago, the emphasis has firmly remained as a fun and social environment in which to compete.

Season Review

Season Review

When the 2015 Lotus Cup Europe season got underway at the annual Jim Clark Revival Meeting at Germany’s Hockenheim circuit in April, Gregory Rasse, Nikolaj Ipsen and Jonathan Walker continued a rivalry that had characterised much of the previous season. With the tyre problems that had troubled Rasse and, to a lesser extent, Walker in 2014 now a distant memory, it seemed likely that this trio would dominate the overall podium places.

When Walker handed his Exige V6 over to team-mate Lee Cunningham for the second race of the weekend, he may have noticed that it was edged off the podium by Jura X’s Xavier Georges, after the squad had traded in its 2-Elevens for the faster Exige V6. Beginning to get a handle on his new mount, Xavier had closed the gap on his rivals, but it was the form of team-mate, and reigning champion, Jérémy Lourenço that would make even bigger waves.

Next time out at Dijon-Prenois, Lourenço lined up alongside Walker on the grid. Whilst Georges endured a torrid weekend after contact with a spinning car in race one, his team-mate finished a close second in the opener. Quickly learning lessons from following Walker, he stalked his rival in the second encounter and pounced late on to take his debut overall victory in the championship.

From that moment on the reigning champion was near-unstoppable. At Magny-Cours he held off a challenge from Georges in the opener, and pulled away from Rasse in the second. The race also saw an exuberant slide exiting the final chicane to celebrate victory, something that almost cost Lourenço his fifth win in a row at Spa-Francorchamps after he’d seen off Walker during a disrupted first race. With half a minute in hand over surprise runner-up Thierry Verheist, the runaway leader spun partway through the Bus Stop chicane. Despite stalling, the Frenchman was able to get going and still enjoy a winning margin of more than ten seconds over the rest.

Lourenço’s remarkable winning streak finally came to an end at Brands Hatch in August, where Walker used knowledge of his home circuit to take his second win of the season. But even when he was on the back foot, Lourenço still managed to pull another victory out of the bag in the second race, which included surviving a moment in the gravel at Paddock Hill. Rasse shared the spoils with the champion at his home track, Zolder, although poleman Walker was unlucky to crash out whilst lapping a backmarker.

Lotus Cup Europe Review

Despite indifferent starts at the Le Mans finale, Lourenço grabbed two dominant wins, before Rasse fought back in the double-points finale, tracking the Frenchman and pressurising him into a mistake when he ran wide onto the pit straight. But Lourenço was clearly the man to beat in 2015, with team-mate Georges now firmly established in the fight for poles and wins.

Despite so many victories, Lourenço would relinquish his overall title by seasons’ end, because another man was even more dominant in 2015. Further back in the field John Rasse made his full-time return to Lotus Cup Europe and won all but one round in the Production class. His Lotus Elise Cup R ran smoothly throughout the season until the penultimate race at Le Mans when gearbox worries forced him to skip the contest in order to secure a finish in the double-points finale and with it the overall championship. After a race-long battle, Jason McInulty benefitted from a clash between Markus Nikowitsch and James Knight to become the only other man to win a round in Production.

The closest title challengers to John Rasse and Lourenço were the battling 2-Eleven pairing of Christophe Lisandre and Jean-Baptiste Loup, the latter inheriting his father’s car following Loup Snr’s graduation to the V6 Cup class with an Exige. Category veteran Lisandre looked set for the class title but a heartbreaking mechanical issue in the finale gave Loup Jnr the honours.

The Open class received a welcome boost in 2015 with the older four-cylinder Exiges joining the category, where series stalwart David Harvey continued to show well in his veteran 340R. Greg Rasse’s team-mate Nicolas Ferrer took the majority of the wins, and his performances earned him the class title.

JOHN RASSE LOTuS Cup EuROpE CHampiON

How did you first get into racing?

I have done 8 years of track days before I started racing in 2008 in Lotus Cup Europe when it was 100 miles endurances races running in German AVD organisation.

You’ve raced in Lotus Cup Europe for a few seasons before taking a break and returning in 2015 – what made you come back to the championship?

Having sold my Exige Cup 255 at the end of the 2012 season and I tried to return in 2013 with a new Exige V6 cup R. However, we didn’t manage to find an agreement with Lotus before the start of 2013 season so I ended up doing just a couple of races at Brands Hatch with Xavier Georges’ 2/Eleven. During 2014 I was racing in the Belgian Endurance Championship with my BMW M3 GTR, something I continued to do until mid 2015. However, with the new Elise Cup R being permitted for the 2015 season there was now the right car at the right price for me to return for 2015 in Lotus Cup Europe.

Before the season started what were your expectations and did you expect to win so many races?

Before the season start, I had done a couple of very short tests in Zolder and my lap times were already more than 2 seconds faster than the Production Best time in 2014. I knew I had a good set-up to start with but I was also expecting some major improvements with all the others Production

cars. One of the goals was to fight in Production Class with my old friends and spend some good time with them.

There was only one race you didn’t win, at Le Mans, a race you withdrew from - why was this?

The 2015 regulations remove 4 worst scores of the driver’s season. As I won all the races, my first dropped score was already the last race in Zolder. I knew then that all the scores from Le Mans will be dropped except the last one that scores double. I was not really confident because I drove in Le Mans only once before and it is really not my favourite track. After winning the first race, I had noticed a small issue with my gearbox selection cables. The timing between race 2 and 3 was very short and I had to run and finish at least 3rd in the last race to win the championship. I decide not to run the race 2 and let the mechanics work without pressure. By the way it has been really close anyway because we have had a kill switch issue 30 minutes before race 3. Luckily my mechanics had done a very good job so I was on track.

You’ll be moving on from Lotus Cup Europe with the championship won, where will we see you racing next?

As my car has been sold, I won’t return for a full season in LCE but we never know, I will try to catch some opportunities. 2016 should normally be a full M235i Racing Cup championship season with Qvick Motors and probably some races with the M3 GTR. I will probably run the 24h of Silverstone and Zolder.

Do you have any advice for anyone looking to join Lotus Cup Europe?

Running the Production Class is probably the best thing to do for someone joining the LCE. The running costs are incredibly low compare to other classes and the drivers behaviour is very friendly. The Elise Cup R is very reliable and fast enough to get very strong results. The race week-ends are well organized, always on prestigious European tracks.

Lotus Cup UK Speed ChampionshipBack to our roots

The Lotus on Track Racing Drivers Club was formed from the track day club from which it takes its name, however, the Lotus on Track Elise Trophy was not the first motor sport event organised by its founders. Many of the drivers taking part in the first season in 2007 cut their competitive teeth in sprinting. The Lotus Cup UK Speed Championship was inaugurated in 2014, consolidating the two main sprint series for Lotus enthusiasts.Sprinting is the perfect stepping stone for drivers ready to take their first steps in competition, with drivers alone on the track and without the distraction of other cars, or the fear of contact, able to concentrate on their technique and speed. It appeals to both track day drivers, who are able to use their skills in a competitive environment, and complete novices, who can instantly compare their performances to the frontrunners.Sprinting is also an accessible form of motorsport. Road going cars are eligible to participate, and the vast majority of competitors will not need to fit a roll cage, fire extinguisher or harness to take part. Events take place over just a single day, avoiding the need to book accommodation.

The Lotus Cup UK Speed Championship operates similar technical rules to Lotus Cup Europe, with classes for normally-aspirated Production and faster SuperSport cars. Drivers can easily graduate to racing once they are comfortable with their performance and ready to take the next step. Each of the 2016 championship’s rounds has been selected for their suitability for novice drivers, with a variety of venues ranging from sprint circuits, airfields and race tracks. These will include the Lotus test track at Hethel, a popular venue for several track days organised by Lotus-on-Track, and the Brands Hatch & Snetterton race circuits, where drivers will compete on the same bill as wheel to wheel race championships. At each round competitors will get the opportunity to walk the course, before commencing with practice runs to learn the course. They will then have two or three chances to post their fastest time. Their best time from these two or three runs will be classified in the final results.Just like the racing series, the Lotus Cup UK Speed Championship is designed to be fun and sociable, creating an environment where Lotus owners can meet up whilst taking part in grass roots motor sport.

What is sprinting?

Sprinting is racing against the clock held at race circuits and specialised sprint tracks (such as Curborough).

Cars start singly and are timed by electronic equipment accurate to 100th of a second.

What you need to take part:

MSA Non Race National B licence - Just £43, no test or medical required.Timing strut - Enables your car to be timed and is usually fitted to the cars front towing point.Yellow electrical tape - A small amount is needed to cover the battery earth.Ignition off sticker - Just a small sticker to show which way to turn your ignition off.Crash Helmet - meeting MSA criteria, most track day helmets are suitable.Race suit - Flame resistant overalls in Proban or Nomex are required to MSA criteria.

Having claimed the 2014 Lotus Cup UK Speed Championship overall title, Xavier Brooke graduated to the SuperSport class for this season, aiming to retain his crown at a quicker pace. With the first two wins of the year at North Weald in March and Snetterton in April, it looked as though he was on course to achieve his aim.

However, the champion would not win again until September when the series visited Curborough in Staffordshire. In between the second and ninth rounds, David Mann and Tony Pearman had shared the spoils, taking three victories each, setting up a showdown for the SuperSport runners.

Meanwhile, the Production class saw many new victors following the graduation of the previously dominant Brooke. Jez Braker, Graeme Foley and Philip Stratton-Lake all had racing knowledge and with the experience of lapping circuits in a wide variety of conditions, put this to good use to score wins during the season. Braker picked a brace of wins at North Weald and MIRA early in the season, whilst Graeme Foley scored his wins at Snetterton and Curborough while Stratton-Lake took the honours at the opening visit to Hethel. Also picking

up a win and with the least experience of all the season long front runners was Graeme’s son Simon Foley who came out on top at the 2nd visit to Hethel.

Nevertheless, Rob Clark used his sprinting and track day knowledge to excellent effect, extracting as much speed as possible from both his own Elise and for much of the season the Elise of Steve Porter that he shared to take three wins in the summer, the most of any driver in the Production class. However, consistent scoring saw Braker lead the standings going into the final round of the year at Snetterton in November.

The championship’s dropped-score system would work against Braker, but mechanical issues gave SuperSport’s Pearman an even bigger handicap. He would be forced to switch to the Production class for the weekend in a borrowed car. It was a solution that epitomised the spirit of the Lotus Cup UK Speed Championship, for there were many tales of co-operation between rivals that even included a concerted effort to repair a failed head gasket ready for a last-gasp timed run!

Speed Championship Review

Season Review

Pearman’s particular gamble paid off, as he took a Production victory, and with it the overall championship title. This made him the only man to win in two different classes during the season, whilst Lotus Cup racer Jason McInulty claimed the SuperSport spoils at the final round of the year.

Clark’s run of wins gave him the runner-up spot and meant he was the top Production runner, just two points ahead of Braker. With Pearman champion by just four points, and 10 covering the top five which included 2014 Champion Brooke, it was a close battle between all competitors in 2015.

Championship Standings

Why did you join the LCUK Speed Championship in 2015?

I’ve had the same Elise for 14 years and have modified it over the years to maximise its performance and to suit my style. Having done many track days, I felt it was time to try something new that was a bit more competitive. I’ve been watching the LCUK Speed Championship for a while and followed some of my friends that were already competing, so it seemed like a good idea to have a go myself. I had quite a few in depth conversations with Xav, Dave and Jay to get more of a feel of what was involved and they persuaded me to take part. Having been a part of the Lotus community for many years, I knew I would get plenty of support and encouragement from everyone, and knowing the kind of camaraderie these events inspire, I took the plunge and signed up.

What motorsport experience did you have and how easy did you find it to get started?

My previous motorsport experience was in karting, running in the 100 Britain class for a couple of seasons before moving into the TKM class. Whilst in that class I was invited to take part in the Fedex 24hr kart race in Dubai in 2000 & 2001 which was a brilliant experience. After many years of track days and having always maintained the car myself, I found it really easy to prepare the car for sprinting. It needed a few modifications as I was in the SuperSport class, having a Honda engine in my car, but these were straightforward to do. I had a few questions, but the sprinting community was very helpful in providing answers. In fact, the hardest part of the process was filling in the application for the racing licence!

What was your favourite venue and why?

I enjoyed most of the circuits we competed at and each of them had pros and cons. Snetterton, being a proper race circuit with all the facilities and a buzzy atmosphere was enjoyable. Hethel was good too, taking the car back to where it was created. However, I would have to say the best circuit for me was Blyton Park, being my home circuit. It’s really well suited to the handling of the

Elise; the event was a double header so gave more time to get into the spirit of the event. There were ups and downs for some of the competitors, but everyone pulled together to get them back on track as quickly as possible which, for me, encapsulated the grass roots nature of what sprinting is all about.

You had a close battle with Xav and David Mann all season. How did you find this?

The battle with Dave and Xav on the circuit was, in a word - exhausting, but at the same time it was totally exhilarating, challenging, frustrating, exciting and a whole other gamut of emotions. Off the circuit the friendly banter, the support and friendship was brilliant. The battle was extremely close, and honestly I would not have minded who won in the end, I have so much respect for Dave and Xav, and for all of the other competitors who showed true grit and enthusiasm from start to finish.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of taking part in sprinting?

Remember you are there to enjoy yourself and the company of others you are competing against. The main competitor is yourself and the clock, remember when you get to the first corner you’re on your own with cold tyres and brakes!

What are you motorsport plans for the future, will you be back to defend your title?

I’d love to be able to go racing in one form or another, unfortunately at the moment funds do not allow it – unless anyone reading this would like to sponsor me! I also have to fit a new engine in my car as I blew mine up the week before the last round, so I now have a plan for that (I think). As for defending my title next year, I may be back in a production class car, but the jury is still out.
