President’s Report
We’ve had another year of growth and development for Ultimate here in the ACT, so it is
with great pleasure that I present the Canberra Ultimate 2016-17 Annual Report.
Continued Membership Growth via Leagues
On 30 June 2017, Canberra Ultimate had 1012 members – that is, 1012 people with an
ACT or region postcode (2582 to 2650 and 2900 to 2915) or none at all (a new glitch in
the system allowed some people to register for our Leagues without providing a
postcode), registered and paid to play in a CU event in the previous 12 months. This
was up 97 members or 10% from the previous year – another strong result.
This reflected the most important part of Canberra Ultimate’s work – delivering our local
Leagues, and growing them! As I write in October 2017 our peak Spring season saw
records broken for another year, with our webmaster Simon reporting 1649 total
registrations, 890 unique players (481 male/409 female).
Our League Committees continued to be amazingly hard working in serving all these
people. Thanks to Sara Gillett, Tim Gillett, Brendan Palazzi, Krishna Kenche, Simon
Ratcliffe, Chantelle Jones, Myall Hingee, Zac Hain and many other helpers. Thank you
again!
Delivering More for Youth and Women
2016-17 saw a bigger focus on the recruitment and development of young players and
women players. Indeed, our current season is where it’s at. After consulting through
winter (including via a planning day – and thanks for all involved in that!) we’ve launched
a Youth Ultimate League on Tuesday nights (preceding NCUL, which is convenient for
Ultimate-playing parents) for 13-17 year old players; and we’ve listened and rebadged
the formerly occasional open and women’s Leagues into CU-run Social Women’s and
Guy’s Ultimate League (or SWaGUL) on Thursday nights.
A big move also was to complete our five year journey towards full parity for women and
men in Mixed competition, with the formal adoption of requirements for teams to be able
to field either four women and three men or three women and four men. It wasn’t that
long ago that teams were playing ‘with whoever turned up’ and fielding two, one or even
zero women. We have slowly brought the rostering rules into international alignment.
I’m pleased to report that in the end, everyone seems to have adapted smoothly and
taken to recruiting and retaining more women players!
Meanwhile we’ve also continued to plan and invest in the Youth space, contributing
$2,500 to our ACT u18’s campaign, and $1,500 to the u22’s campaign. This funding
provides training field hire, helps to offset travel and uniform costs of the players and
helps support volunteer coaches and managers, without whom we wouldn’t get to these
great national events. Thanks to everyone involved in the youth space – of which there
are thankfully too many young leaders to mention – but also to parents and other
passionate ‘adult’ helpers like Konrad Wallace, Teegan Williamson, Rebecca Hilton,
Leon Smith and the representative squad coaches.
Outstanding Representative Play
Canberra hosted three big tournaments during the 2016-17 year, starting with Easterns in
February 2017, which saw the ANU Ultimate Club (thanks gang) host 440 players from
26 teams from across NSW and the ACT. Then the Factory and Fyshwick clubs hosted
Canberra Ultimate Annual Report 2016-17 Page 4
the Brisbane-Canberra Invitational, which brought eight of the best women’s and eight of
the best men’s Ultimate teams to town in April. Well done crew. Plus we had the ACT
Championships in September 2016 and then again in September 2017, the latter hosted
by F-Troop! We’re now gearing up to manage Easterns 2018.
Many Canberra players represented us with pride on the international and national stage
during the year, and these are summarised elsewhere in this report.
The year was big for the next level of ‘youth’ Ultimate locking into place, with the
inaugural national u22s Championships taking place in November. The ACT was
represented by Mixed, Men’s and Women’s teams. Meanwhile the national u18s
championships continued in Melbourne, where we were able to send a highly competitive
boys team, and our girls joined up with WA to do very well.
We sent a lot of teams to the proliferation of national championships – the rosters and
results are summarised elsewhere, but huge congratulations to Factory for bringing home
Bronze from the Australian Ultimate Championships in April, and Fyshwick Unit for
bringing home gold in the Division II Championships.
Ongoing Governance and Finance
On the administrative front, Canberra Ultimate held its Annual General Meeting on
10 September 2016 at the inaugural ACT Championships, meaning we had over 120+
people in attendance. We thanked Ben Grady and Tom Walcott who stepped down from
the Board, and I retired as President in the forlorn hope that someone would step up.
Anthony Perry was returned as Treasurer, and Liz de Hoog, Tehliah Dundas and Simon
Ratcliffe were returned as General Members, and we welcomed Konrad Wallace as well.
We were unable to elect a Secretary. After taking something of a ‘sabbatical’ but still
helping out, the Board reappointed me as President in April 2017.
On my return we conducted the Big Canberra Ultimate Survey which we then published
online. We followed this with a planning day, and then drafted three and published short-
term plans for overall growth, women’s development and youth development.
In February we received a renewed Annual Operational Grant of $7,500 from the ACT
Government. This grant – and the continuing support we receive from the ACT
Government in terms of field access and bookings - continues to give us confidence that
we are doing the right things going forward.
2017 saw us adopt our new logo, which brings us into line with all the other jurisdictions,
and we slowly rolled it out with new discs and other merchandise.
The Board met three times during 2016-17, with most business transacted informally or
via email. Six newsletters were emailed to the membership during the year.
Thanks
I’ve really only been able to scratch the surface of the year in Canberra Ultimate – our
website has heaps more to show on it - and there are no doubt many more people to
thank, but I’ll leave it there (sorry if I’ve missed you).
Thanks to everyone, particularly my family with putting up with this stuff. Good luck - the
future is bright and shining!

Treasurer's Report
The 2017 Audit Report is provided at Attachment A to this Annual Report. The Association continues its deliberate strategy to budget for and run modest operating surpluses. Building sufficient cash reserves will help position the Association financially should it seek to engage a paid employee in the next 1-2 years. Well done to all involved.
