PROGRAM OVERVIEW AFA IN SCHOOLS – presents a broad range of classroom-based clinics, residencies, and masterclasses that impact underserved communities by enhancing school arts curricula. Divided into “Discovery” (beginner) and “Endeavor” (intensive) levels, AFA In Schools gives young people the opportunity to access enriching musical learning opportunities customized for each population and/or school.
AFA’s YEAR-ROUND CURRICULUM, presented with artistic support from several of Houston’s finest arts organizations, offers unique after-school and weekend opportunities that challenge intermediate to advanced students at their next level of musical accomplishment. AFA’s Chamber Music Academy, Composer Institute, and Houston Girls Chorus programs are being expanded to provide a broader array of opportunities to students at multiple levels.
AFA In Schools
Year-Round Curriculum
In 2016-17, AFA served 42 schools through the AFA In Schools initiative (up from 31 schools in 2015-16). AFA In Schools programs are classified two ways:
• In-school and after-school residencies providing a minimum of ten hours of classroom instruction. (937 students in 19 schools.)
• Clinics, masterclasses, presentations, and performances. (1,732 students in 26 schools.) (Less than ten classroom hours.)
• Chamber Music Academy – intensive work in small groups designed to increase instrumental ability, musical knowledge, and collaborative music making skills.
• Composer Institute – a sequenced curriculum of learning opportunities for young musicians developing the craft of writing music
• Houston Girls Chorus – pre-professional performance and
training opportunities for vocalists in grades 4-12.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
AFA’s flagship SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL provides the most intensive, age-appropriate training that AFA offers. Nearly 500 grade 2-12 vocalists, instrumental performers, pianists and composers participated in over 30,000 hours of instruction in challenging, multi-week experiences in an atmosphere of supportive learning and camaraderie.
Summer Music Festival
The Summer Music Festival features a curriculum that makes music a vehicle to enhance social, academic, and personal learning including:
• Large ensemble experiences that emphasize teamwork, discipline and collaboration.
• Small ensemble opportunities promoting leadership, self-motivation, and communication skills.
• Individual and group coaching that supports technical accomplishment and the development of mentor relationships with AFA teaching artists.
• Classroom musicianship that empowers students to make academic and artistic choices based on their knowledge.

Percentage of Students Receiving Direct Financial Aid by Program*
*Every student benefits from indirect subsidies to offset the full cost of AFA programs. AFA In Schools programs are offered either free of charge or at heavily subsidized rates. No student in an AFA In Schools program pays to participate. On average, AFA’s Summer Music Festival and Year-Round Curriculum can cost in excess of $1,500 per student, far exceeding AFA’s published tuition. For families for whom the subsidized tuition rate represents a hardship, AFA’s Scholarship Enrichment Fund provides direct financial aid.
