Number of children currently enrolled in the project – Project Manzil 2 was to continue providing Life Skills Development, Career Guidance and Counselling Services to students of schools in low income communities in which Project Manzil was implemented in 2016-17.

Project Manzil 1 implemented in 2016-17 set the stage and prepared the ground for effective functioning of a Counseling service in 8 schools. Given the small numbers available per school in the NGO Schools, it was decided to restrict Project Manzil 2 to the 5 Government Schools, while continuing to run the Counselling Cell set-up last year in Nirmal Sewa, an NGO-run school. Further, based on the experience of the previous year, the limited period in which students are avilable for extra-curricular work, as well as the limited time schools are willing to spare for Life Skills Development and Career Guidance, it was proposed to restrict the project to students of classes 8th to 12th in 5 schools, Moreover, because of the criticality of Career Guidance for students of 10th and 12th, it is proposed to conduct only Career Highway Workshops for them.

The schools covered in Project Manzil 2 are:

1. Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Madanpur Khadar (GBSSS, MPK)

At the proposal stage, we had expected to cover a total of 3885 students, including 2825 for Life Skills and 1063 for Career Guidance. But on starting the project, a total of only 3685 students were available to be covered in this project including 2843 for Life Skills Training and 842 for Career Guidance.

Status of Project – Project Manzil 1 had formally gotten over by July 2017 but approval for Project Manzil 2

was received only on 20.11.2017 and the funds were received on 24.11.2017. However, to maintain continuity with the students, project activities were continued even while awaiting approval for Project Manzil 2 to. Also, we had initiated the process of renewal of Government Permission for working with students of Government schools in April 2017

As stated in the Proposal, we had not expected to be able to cover more than 70% students or 1990 (given the absenteeism rates noticed in these schools last year) attend any of the Life skills workshops. As against this we have already covered 1536 students through some of our Life Skills workshops without having been able to address all the classes (numbering a total of 883 students.

In terms of absolute numbers, in 6 months we have covered 54.6% students of the total number of available students in Life Skills Workshops, and 487 students or 60% in the Career Highway Workshops

As for the number of Workshops to be conducted, the data is given in Table 3 below:

As can be seen from the Table above, we have focused on conducting the Career Highway Workshops, knowing that after January schools will not allow time with 10 th

and 12th standard students taking their Board Examinations in March- April. While the number of workshops seems small, but each workshop engages the students for 10 hours or 2 full school days and a team of Counsellors for 4 full days.

4. A Counselling Cell has been operational in Nirmal Sewa, where a Counsellor is available in the school every Wednesday morning since May 2017 and are continuing once a week whenever school is functioning. Some students have sought time with the counselors on their own, several have been referred by teachers and sevral have been identified by the Counsellors during their conduct of the Workshops. Occessionally the counsellor also engages students of different classes in interesting behavioual exercises and games.

Long-term goals of the project (mention any changes you foresee)The Goals of Project Manzil include:

1. To assist in the overall social, psychological and behavioral development of young underprivileged students.

2. To provide them with a space where they can start a reflective and reflexive process about their self and emotions.

Page 5

Page 6: 2016-17 Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil

3. To assist them in dealing with behavioral and adjustment issues 4. Involving parents and teachers in the effort to strengthen the child’s support

systems.

Description of current school facilities (building, equipment etc) 1._GGSSS, Madanpur Khadar - The school has spacious classes but there are very few

classes with benches and tables available to the students. Most of them sit on the mats on ground. There is often no electricity and the classes have a gloomy look to them.

2._GBSSS, Madanpur Khadar – This school shares the infrastructure with GGSSS, Madanpur Khadar, where classes for boys are held in the 2nd shift, while classes for girls are held in the first shift.

3._GBSS, Khanpur School No 2- The school has some classes with benches but not in a very good state. The computer lab is not used and the conditions of the classes are not good. But there is a new building under construction to expand the school.

4._GBSSS, G-Block, Saket- The school is in good shape. The classes have proper benches and tables, and science and computer labs are also available. Though the labs could use some improvement but still they are used by the students. The school has good infrastructure and playground with good supportive staff.

5._SKV Hakikat Rai, Khanpur-The morning shift of GBSS Khanpur School No 2 is called as SKV Hakikat Rai School and it is a girls’ school. Both of the schools share the same premises as a result the condition is same as above mentioned.

How do you need to improve these facilities?

Not relevant – out of scope of project

How do you think the school has improved in the 6 months? We have interpreted this question as referring to the impact the Life Skills Workshops and the Career Highway Workshops have had on the students covered.

A._Impact of the Career Highway Workshops can be sampled from the summary of Feedback of 30 out of 37 10th standard girl students of SKV Hakikat Rai covered in Career Highway Workshop on 4.10.2017 & 07.10.2o17

B._Impact of the Life Skills Workshops can be seen from interviews with 2 boys and 2 girls, which are given below:

1. 13 -year- old, Sachin Kumar, Class VIII, GBSS #2 Khanpur

Q. Tell me about yourselfI am in class VIII. There are five members in my family. I have an older sister

Page 9

Page 10: 2016-17 Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil

Asha for Education 10

and a younger brother. My father is a compounder at a hospital and my mother is a housewife. We moved to Delhi six years ago. We are from Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

Q. Which sessions have you had so far and what were they about? We have had almost 6 sessions. We had a class on teamwork, on listening,

knowing our strengths, in one class we learnt that we should respect ourselves and each other and not fight. There was also one on taking help, where we learnt that we shouldn’t feel ashamed to ask people for help, and we should also help them. There was also one class where we could ask about the body and about sex.

Q. Why do you think you have these classes? We have these classes so that we can know more about the world and we can make better decisions in our future.

Q. Which class was your favourite?I liked the class on sex and the body.

Q. Is there anything specific that you learned from the session?

A lot of things which I didn't know became clear. We learnt that girls have only X (chromosome). If a boy gives Y (chromosome) then the baby is a boy if he gives X (Chromosome) then its a girl. Nobody can choose this so it's not a mother’s fault if people don't have a son.

I liked this class because we were given a sheet of statements and we had to pick from options of agree, disagree or I don't know. One of the statements was ‘Sex is bad’ and I ticked agree. But Ma’am said this is not true. If both the girl and boy agree to do it and it is safe, it is ok. But if even one person doesn't want to do it, then it is forcing and not good.

Another statement was ‘Periods are bad’. I ticked ‘I don’t know’ because I didn't know what periods are. Then Ma’am explained how every 28 days all women get periods. I asked my older sister about it, but she didn't know and she has not had these classes. I asked my teacher also to understand more so she said that every month the impurities in a woman’s body come out through periods and that this is natural.

Q. How do you think these sessions will help you?

I think these sessions help us to be more respectful and they clear our doubts.

Page 10

Page 11: 2016-17 Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil

2. 12-year-old Momeet, VIII- C, GBSS #2 Khanpur

Q. Tell me about yourselfI study in VIII-C. My class teacher’s name is P.C. Meena. I have three brothers and I am the youngest. My father is a shopkeeper and my mother is a housewife. My family is from Moradabad. My parents came to Delhi a few years before I was born.

Q. Which sessions have you had so far and what were they about? We have had many sessions on being respectful, knowing our strengths and taking help from others.

Q. Why do you think you have these classes? So that we know about our strengths and learn how to talk to others. Also, if we get into difficult situations, we should think with a calm mind and not get angry. We should also not hesitate to take help from others and help others in turn too.

Q. Which class was your favourite?

Page 11

Page 12: 2016-17 Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil

Asha for Education 12

I liked the session on giving respect.

Q. Is there anything specific that you learned from the session? Before I would talk to my brothers rudely and I would fight with them. But in the class, Ma’am said that if I give people respect, they will respect me too. One of my brothers is in the other section and he also had the same class, so we both talk to each other respectfully now.

Q. How do you think these sessions will help you?I know my strengths now. I know that I am a good singer, I can cook well and that I am very helpful. When my mother gets sick, I cook food at home. My brothers used to make rice and daal and I watched them and learnt how to cook too. So, I can also learn things very fast.

3. 15- year-old Laxmi, Class IX, SKV Hakikat Rai

Q. Tell me about yourselfMy name is Laxmi. My father is a gardener and my mother is a housewife. My family is from Bihar. They moved to Delhi, a few years before I was born.

Q. Which sessions have you had so far and what were they about?

We have had sessions on teamwork and knowing our strengths.

Q. Why do you think you have these classes?

Page 12

Page 13: 2016-17 Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil

Asha for Education 13

We have these classes so that we can know about things beyond our studies.

Q. Which class was your favourite?I liked the class on strengths.

Q. Is there anything specific that you learned from the session?I learned that it's important to respect everyone. Some people are good at studies, but other people are good at different things and we should appreciate then encourage them to develop their skills.

Q. How do you think these sessions will help you?I think these classes help me be more confident. When I know my strengths, I can feel more confident. They have also made me more interested in talking to my classmates and learning about their interests.

4. 14- year-old Sneha, Class IX, SKV Hakikat Rai

Q. Tell me about yourself

Page 13

Page 14: 2016-17 Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil

Asha for Education 14

My name is Sneha. My father is an auto driver and my mother is a housewife.

Q. Which sessions have you had so far and what were they about?

We have had a session respecting and helping each other, teamwork and recognizing strengths.

Q. Why do you think you have these classes? We have these classes so that we can become more confident.

Q. Which class was your favourite?I liked the class on strengths. I don't get good marks but ma'am complimented me in front of everyone because I am a good dancer. I really felt good.

Q. Is there anything specific that you learned from the session? In the class on respecting each other, we had a group discussion. I was really impressed with the way some girls shared their views. They were so much better than me. It made me realize that other people know a lot, and we should ask them for help and learn from them. That is how we can all support each other and grow.

Q. How do you think these sessions will help you?I think these classes will help us to think about our future. Studies are not everything. There are things like art, cooking, dancing which we can learn and be good at too.

What are the problems you have faced in the last year?

Scheduling of workshops continues to be a challenge in implementing this Project. A large number of days are unavailable on account of holidays, school events, prep. Time for examinations, examinations and vacations apart from pressure to complete the CBSE Curriculum.

The process gets smoothened if the Coordinator appointed by the school is positive, attends our workshops and takes feedback from students

How would you rate the overall effectiveness of this project over the past year?

Effectiveness of this project can essentially be assessed on 3 parameters:1. Acceptance of Counseling as a normal process of support needed by a

young person and required to be given by a school.

Page 14

Page 15: 2016-17 Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil Annual Progress Report - Project Manzil

Asha for Education 15

2. Mind-set and behavior change seen in students as a result of the Life Skills Workshops

3. Clarity regarding career choices and future in the High School students

Our assessment of each of the 3 items is given below: 1. Acceptance of Counseling has become much higher in some schools as

compared to others and is pretty good in 2 of the 5. We find that it increases as class teachers take feedback and listen to the students, attend our workshops and interact with the counsellors.

2. Responses of students about the changes in their thinking and behavior can be gauged from transcripts of interviews written in answer to the Question “How do you think the school has improved in the 6 months?” – Item B

3._ Details relating to item 3 have been given in answer to the Question “How do you think the school has improved in the 6 months?” – item A above.

How much longer do you foresee requiring Asha funding, and for what purposes?

This project needs to be implemented atleast for 3 years to demonstrate the impact. We would strongly urge Asha For Education, SFO to consider funding for the 3rd year also.
