The Fundamentals

Basketball Ontario has various classifications

• Learn to Train:

- U10 (Novice); U11 (Atom); U12 (Major Atom)

• Train to Learn:

- U13 (Bantam); U14 (Major Bantam)

• Train to Compete:

- U15 (Midget); U16 (Major Midget);

U17 (Juvenile); U19 (Junior)

Some variations to FIBA are common to all ages and some are unique to each age class

Variations of Note (All Levels)

1. 4 – 8 minute quarters

2. Overtime is 4 minutes

3. No charge semi circle is not in use

4. Restricted Area (order if more than one)

1. New FIBA rectangle

2. Old FIBA trapezoid

3. NFHS (one spot up)

5. 24-second reset on offensive rebound

6. May add player to score sheet after game start

7. Captain as coach only if 19 years old

8. Coach must be qualified per Basketball Ontario regulations (minimum is to have completed the NCCP training program)

B. U10 1. No shot clock (Modified Closely Guarded)

2. Person to person defence only

3. Equal Participation

4. Each shift begins with AP arrow at centre

5. Penalty (5 fouls per 2 shifts)

6. No pressing at any time (Drop back Rule)

7. No 3-point line in use

8. 13-foot free throw line

Modified Closely Guarded

• When shot clock not in use

• Holding the ball anywhere on the court

• Within 1 metre

• Playing active defence

The Modification:

• If offence is withholding the ball:

- Holding or dribbling

Drop back Rule

• Enforced by officials

• Once losing team secures backcourt control:

- Defence must retreat past centre line

- Defence must allow offence to dribble ball unimpeded across centre line

• Penalized by throw-in at free throw line extended in frontcourt

• Repeated violation may result in delay penalty (Team technical?)

Equal Participation

• Officials to help administer

- Line up in front of scorers table

- Scorer records those entering

• Not required in overtime

• Problems are to be dealt with by the tournament convenor
