Rider UniversityStruggling Student Instructional Plan

For my struggling student, I decided to compose an ADDIE instructional

planning model. After compiling careful research about different instructional models,

I decided to choose this model. There are five cyclical phases in the ADDIE model:

analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.

Step 1: Analysis

Reading Struggles:

Doesn’t enjoy reading during free time at home

Doesn’t enjoy purchasing new books or completing reading work pages or

taking reading tests

Doesn’t enjoy reading what they read in school or reading a dictionary

Doesn’t enjoy reading out loud in class

Score: Recreational: 75% Academic: 54%

Writing Struggles:

Doesn’t enjoy writing letters after reading

Doesn’t enjoy writing about why something happened or persuasive writing

Doesn’t enjoy writing poetry for fun

Wouldn’t enjoy writing for a newspaper or a magazine

Doesn’t enjoy writing in free time

Feels that they write enough in school and would not like to write more

Doesn’t enjoy writing long stories

Would not enjoy their classmates reading something they wrote

Score: 48%

Spelling Analysis:

Considers themselves a good speller because they check over their spelling

Uses the dictionary to check for the spelling of unknown words

Willing to help someone spell a unknown word

When the word is not found in the dictionary, they ask an adult for help

Step 2/3/4: Design/Development/Implementation

Reading:

Send home required reading logs and have the student select choice books to

make reading during free time more enjoyable

Let

student browse through reading magazines (Highlights/Scholastic) at series

books and reading activities to get the student excited about reading a new

book in the series and want to own the next book in a given series

Incorporate dictionary use in class and show that dictionaries are not only

used to help with spelling words, but they can also be used to discover the

meanings of unknown words

Allow activities in class where students have a chance to narrate a character

or read dialogue when reading a book aloud in class to build confidence in the

student to read in front of the class

Writing:

Do class activities where point of view shifts, pretending that the students are

a character in the story, encouraging writing letters to the author

Expose the student to poetry and how poetry can be fun; have the student do

an activity where they write their own poem. Have the student try to compile

one of their small moments stories into one poem.

Have the student exposed to the school gazette, or even start a school

gazette, allowing any student to contribute an article to the school paper

Do a class activity where the students write a story on the first day of school,

and write one story a month about the school year in their free time at home,

and then write a final story on the last day of school, creating a personal 3rd

grade book that they can savor, thus encouraging writing during free time for

fun

Have the class partake in a anonymous writing workshop, where the students

review everyone’s writing, giving compliments and feedback to make their

individual writing stronger, thus giving the struggling student more confidence

to have their written work read by their class

Spelling:

Rather than using the dictionary to discover the spelling of unknown words,

try an activity where students needs to discover the meaning of unknown

words by using a dictionary as well

Encourage the use of technology when discovering the spelling of a word

Keep record of unknown words and do self-administered spelling drills using

flashcards or even doing drills with the teacher

Have this student take part in a spelling bee to reinforce the spelling of known

words, and provide a challenge for the student to discover new unknown

words

Step 5: Evaluation

Formative/Summative Reading Assessments:

All in all, this instructional plan is appropriate for student “J” because with all

of the teaching materials, activities geared towards the student, and evaluation

methods, student “J” can not only improve, but can also maintain academic success.

In my instructional plan, I designed lesson ideas that are geared toward this student

to make themselves accountable for their own learning in order to boost their

confidence and motivation to succeed academically and socially. In using this ADDIE

model, I integrated all 5 phases to create a plan that would cover the teaching

concepts of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. With all

5 ingredients included in this model, this will yield a recipe of accomplishment for this

student.
