ProgramSpirit, Moving over Chaos – reflections from Rick Bjella ~ 2013

All of us have had difficult times in our lives regardless of our age, ethnicity, socio-economic background, or orientation. For me, one of the most challenging was in junior high. Despite a few highlights, (mainly choir and piano), there were many times that I could not make sense of the way others and I were treated, as well as all that was going on in the world in the 1960s. Composers and poets throughout every generation have expressed the chaos that many feel during their middle school years and beyond. This program looks at ways to challenge the status quo with sacred and secular music that was written from 1230 to the present. Can we rise above the chaos and make a statement about beauty, wonder, and the best of what is to come? We honor the brilliance in each of the students who are singing today, and their amazing teachers and parents as well.

Section ISpirit, moving over chaos David Ashley White (b. 1944) / Selah Publishing Co.

The opening lines “Spirit, moving over chaos, bringing light where there was none, be to us a light, revealing where the work is to be done,” addresses the issues of our day. The piece seems to be telling us to take time to reflect on your journey and look where you can help your corner of the world. Here, White’s melody lifts us out of the drone and cluster of life’s rushed existence and gives a glimpse at what lies beyond.

Sumer is icumen in (anon 1230) / arr. Richard Bjella (b. 1951) / manuscriptWritten nearly 900 years ago, this canon celebrates the coming of spring and the sounds and happenings in nature – including bucks farting! The violin and cello play their own musical ‘hide and seek’ game as well, while accentuating the unmitigated joy of spring!

Section IITant que vivray Claudin de Sermisy (c. 1490–1562) / National Music Publishers–192

The graceful lilt of this French chanson is standard fare in almost all of Sermisy’s abundant secular output. Here Claudin’s favorite poet, Clément Marot, discusses the quest towards a relationship from Adolescence Clémentine (1532).

Riu, riu chiu Mateo Flecha (1481–1553) / choral public domainThis rollicking Spanish villancico (or Christmas carol) was only recently attributed to Catalonian composer, Mateo Flecha, the elder (not to be confused with Mateo Flecha, the younger – his nephew). The basic themes of the song are the nativity of Christ and the Immaculate Conception. Speaking in allegorical terms, the chorus refrain translates: “Ríu, ríu, chíu, the river guards her; God kept the wolf away from Our Lamb.” The Immaculate Conception is discussed in the 1st verse: “The raging wolf sought to bite her, but God Almighty knew to defend her; He chose to make her so that she could not sin; no original sin was found in that virgin.” As is so often the case, the lines between the sacred and the secular are once again blurred.

Section IIIDona nobis pacem Vladimir Vavilov (1925–1973) arr. James Moore / Alliance Music Publications, Inc

Even though this was attributed to Renaissance composer Giulio Caccini (1546–1618), it was actually written by Russian guitarist, lutenist and composer, Vladimir Vavilov in the 1970s. He kept many of his works under this mysterious cloak by claiming that they were actually anonymous or written by famous Rennaisance or Baroque masters. His original words are Ave Maria, which have been changed by James Moore to Dona nobis pacem. Regardless, the melody is beautiful and worthy of full expression here.

Hava Blessing (with thanks to Johannes Ockeghem and Thomas Tallis) Rick Bjella / manuscriptThe tune Hava Nashira, shire hallelujah (let us sing, sing alleluia) was originally thought to be a Hebrew sacred song surfacing around 1860, but now is attributed to Johannes Ockeghem (1410/25–1497), the greatest Franco-Flemish composer of his generation. He wrote this little drinking ditty some 400 years before it was rediscovered and then made immortal as a sacred treasure of the Jewish people. Partnering this song with the famous Tallis Canon in the strings and piano came to me in the middle of the night. You will hear both of them in canon with themselves and each other at the same time, one in the strings and piano, the other in the voices, in two different keys. The rhythmic ostinato that keeps trying to pulverize the 4/4 meter is just for fun. The piece is dedicated to the 2013 Wisconsin Middle Level Honors Choir.

Section IVDeep Blue Moira Smiley (b. 1976) / Moira Smiley Publishing Co.

Moira writes on her title page, “This song is about the delicate walk between our fears and sense of awe, or wonder – and trust in love.” This entire program, given and presented with passion, is trying to find ‘Spirit, moving over chaos’ as each of us embrace the difficult and worthwhile journey towards deeper expressions of our greatest good.

ProgramHungarian Dance #5 Brahms Carl Fischer LLC

The Hungarian Dances are a set of 21 lively dance pieces based on traditional Hungarian themes. Originally published as piano duets in 1869, Brahms wrote a version for solo piano three years later. In 1873 he orchestrated three of the dances for full orchestra. Dance #5 is written in a three-part (A–B–A) form. Sudden dramatic changes in tempo, rhythm, character and tonality are evident in this dance, contributing to it being the most celebrated of the entire set.

March Slav Tchaikovsky arr. C Paul Herfurth Carl Fischer LLC

March Slav (“Slavic March”) is based on Russian and Serbian folk melodies. Even though the score initially is headed “in the manner of a funeral march,” the ending is far from somber. Four introductory bars lead into the first theme, heard low in bassoons and violas. The woodwinds lift it to a higher register. Later, and twice in this arrangement, tuba and strings intone the Russian National Anthem “God Save the Tsar.”

March Slav’s patriotic purpose reflects the fact that the piece was written for a charity concert in support of a war effort in the Balkans by Serbians, a war into which the Russian Czar was determined that Russia would join. It seems unlikely that Tchaikovsky was aware of the political maneuverings, for he was otherwise consumed with complex emotional and personal problems. However, he knew how to stir up the audience’s patriotic zeal as well as anyone. In this piece, he takes two Serbian folksongs and the anthem and casts them in the shape of a march with added fanfare and glitz. The work was so successful at the first performance that it had to be encored in full – twice!

Laudate Pueri (from the Solemn Vespers) Mozart arr. Ousley manuscript

Vesperae solennes de Confessore (K.339), or “Solemn Vespers”, was Mozart’s final composition for the Salzburg Cathedral in 1780, before his permanent departure from his hometown in search of greater artistic opportunities in Vienna. One of two settings Mozart made of this service, K.339 was intended for the special celebration of an undisclosed saint’s day (the “confessor” of the title).

One of six original movements, the elaborate and rather archaic fugal setting of “Laudate pueri” draws special interest and attention. This arrangement utilizes materials from the traditional Baroque-style theme returning in modified form in the “Kyrie” of Mozart’s Requiem. Though less well known today than other major works in the Mozart repertoire, the “Solemn Vespers” stands as one of the high points of his sacred output, and provides an appropriate opportunity to feature the strings in this segment of our honors concert.

March Militarie Francaise (from the “Algerian Suite”, Op. 60) Saint-Saens arr. Isaac Carl Fischer LLC

As a composer, Charles Camille Saint-Saëns wrote in many genres, including opera, symphonies, concertos, sacred and secular choral music and chamber music. His highly popular works, including Danse Macabre (1875) and Samson and Delilah were written during a short and tragic marriage, that included the loss of his two young sons within a period of six weeks. March Militaire Francaise is the final movement of a four-movement symphonic poem, Suite Algérienne, Opus 60, that was inspired by Saint–Saëns’ trips to Algeria, then a French colony on the continent of Africa. Although no authentic Algerian music exists in this piece, Saint-Saëns used melodic tendencies of the native Algerian culture. The last movement, March Militaire Francaise, has become famous independently of the others both as an orchestral favorite and as a French concert march for the wind ensemble and concert band. It was transcribed for band by Mayhew Lake in the early twentieth century and was a favorite of Arthur Fiedler and all of the famous bands of the day.

Jupiter Holst arr. Leidig Alfred Music Publishing

Although “The Planets” remains Holst’s most popular work, the composer did not count it among his best creations and later in life complained about its popularity. Originally scored for piano duet, Holst later scored the work for orchestra, which brought enormous popularity to the imaginative and colorful piece. The novel sonorities helped make the work an immediate success with audiences at home and abroad. The orchestral premier of “The Planets Suite” was held in September of 1918 during the last weeks of World War I. A public concert was given in London in February of the following year, under the auspices of the Royal Philharmonic Society. “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity,” is the most popular of the movements and it conveys the astrological significance of Jupiter as benevolent and generous. Adapted to fit a poem by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, “I vow to thee, my country,” the music became associated with the strong patriotic feelings resulting from the human cost of World War I.

    Saturday, October 26 • 1:00 p.m. • Marriott Madison WestSam Hazo • Band Conductor

ProgramPictures at an Exhibition Mussorgsky arr. Sweeney Hal Leonard Publishing Co.

Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky composed the original ten movement suite in 1874 based on his musical impressions from drawings and watercolours of artist Viktor Stasov. The original piano work was composed in just six weeks and links each of the suite’s movements in a way that depicts the viewer’s progress through the exhibition. Three of the original movements are incorporated into this adaptation, including Promenade, The Hut of Baba Yaga and The Great Gate of Kiev.

Georgian Suite Hazo I. Kingsland Spring Hal Leonard Publishing Co. II. Rivers III. Ascend

‘Kingsland Spring’ was commissioned by the Georgia Music Educators Association. The lyrical work uses flowing melodic lines and creative scoring to create an effective setting. Alternating sections of light and delicate writing with full broad-sounding chorale passages create interest throughout the movement.

Commissioned by the Pickens County (GA) Middle School Band on the occasion of the band program being split into separate schools, ‘Rivers’ explores the emotions of separation. The composition portrays the analogy of a river that, when divided, maintains its identity yet becomes two separate entities. Three themes are presented individually then come together in grand fashion at the end.

The final movement ‘Ascend,’ is a driving and energetic work premiered at the 2005 Midwest Band Clinic. A combination of mixed meters and syncopation gives the main theme a unique edge. A brief 3-part fugue is woven into the texture of the piece, which was composed for Tapp Middle School in Powder Springs, GA.

Danny Boy Traditional arr. Hazo Hal Leonard Publishing Co.

With chordal harmonies that can only be described as rich and luxurious, this timeless Irish ballad is presented in a marvelous and engaging setting guaranteed to leave the listener feeling good. Warm chords and a delicate treatment of suspensions help bring this beautiful melody (and concert) to an emotional ending.
