WHITE PAPER Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area – Towards a

competitive and resource efficient transport system 2011

30% of road freight over 300 km should shift to other modes such as rail or waterborne transport by 2030, and more than 50% by 2050, facilitated by efficient

and green freight corridors. To meet this goal will also require appropriate infrastructure to be developed.

7. Romanian multimodal market at a glance

The TEN-T core network includes road-rail terminals in the cities of Timișoara, Craiova and Bucharest, while terminals included in the TEN-T comprehensive network are foreseen for Cluj-Napoca,

Turda, Brașov and Suceava.

CFR Marfă holds 24 such facilities, but many of them are not functional. A considered project involves the transfer of some of them into the property of CFR SA to be able to benefit from European funding.

The most active terminals are the ones built in the recent years by private investors such as Alinso in Ploiesti, Tibbett Logistics in Bucharest or Rail Port in Arad.

The development of intermodal terminals benefits from funding through SOP-T (Axis 3,Intervention area 3.1 / Promotion of intermodal transport). This area has one of the lowest budgets allocated, namely EUR 8.4 Million. Funds can be accessed only by CFR SA in collaboration with local public authorities and must be compliant with the Intermodal Transport Strategy in Romania 2020.
