4 Washington State | Baseball

Entering his 12th season in Pullman and 11th as head coach at Washington State, Donnie Marbut is the third Cougar mentor to guide a team to the postseason, joining Buck Bailey and Bobo Brayton. Marbut is also third on the school’s win list behind the two men who have their name on Washington State’s home ballpark.

Under Marbut’s leadership, the Cougar program has shown marked improvement. In the decade following Brayton’s retirement (1995-2004), Washington State produced two-winning seasons, and averaged 22.1 wins per season. In Marbut tenure, Washington State has averaged nearly 30 wins per season and made a pair of trips to the NCAA Championship. In addition, 37 times, a student-athlete has heard his name called in the MLB Draft.

The Cougars have also has success off the field under Marbut. From 1995-2004, Washington State earned 47 conference all-academic awards. In the last-seven years, the Cougars have garnered 42 certificates. When Marbut took over the program, Washington State’s APR was 853. That number increased to a school record 984 in 2008-09 and currently sits at 968, well above the NCAA requirement of 930.

The two-time Northwest Athletic Association of Com-munity Colleges (NWAACC) Coach of the Year, Marbut joined the Cougar program in the fall of 2003 to assist the infielders and took over head coaching responsibil-ities May 31, 2004.

In 2013 and 2014, Collin Slaybaugh was named a CoSI-DA Academic All-American and the Cougars produced four MLB Draft picks. Slaybaugh was named the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete for baseball in 2014.

Closer Ian Hamilton was named a Freshman All-Ameri-can by Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA in 2014. He set the Cougar single-season record for saves and tied for the nation’s lead among freshmen with 15. Both he and infielder Nick Tanielu were named All-Pac-12.

In 2012, Derek Jones, undrafted out of high school, set the Cougar-career record for home runs with 41 and was an eighth round pick of the Colorado Rockies in the MLB Draft. Jones and Taylor Ard, seventh round selection by the Seattle Mariners, were named ABCA All-West Region and All-Pac-12. They were among five Cougars selected in the MLB Draft.

In 2011, Ard led the Pac-10 with 10 home runs and tied for the conference lead with 55 RBI while batting a team-best .337. He was named All-Pac-10 and turned down the Boston Red Sox to return to Pullman for the 2012 campaign. Southpaw Adam Conley was selected in the second round by the Florida Marlins and turned pro after serving as the Cougars’ ace in 2011.

Marbut’s 2010 squad came within a victory of advanc-ing to the NCAA Super Regional and posted a 37-22 record. The Cougars finished third in the Pac-10 Con-ference with a 15-12 mark. It was the second-straight trip to the postseason for Washington State. Senior

Matt Fanelli was named the Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete for baseball, the third-straight year the Cougars won the award.

In 2009, the Cougars made their first trip to the NCAA Championship since 1990 and finished with a 32-25 re-cord, including 19-8 mark in the Pac-10. The 19 confer-ence wins tied a school record and were good enough for second place, two games back of Pac-10 champion Arizona State. The 11-win improvement in conference play from 2008 to 2009 set a school record.

In the process, the Cougars set a single-season school record with 21 home wins, won a series at USC for the first time in school history, recorded three conference series sweep and five overall for the first time since 1991, and swept a three-game series from Washington for the first time since 1984.

Three Cougars, pitchers Jeremy Johnson and Matt Way, and outfielder Jared Prince, were named to the All-Pac-10 Team, the most for the program since 1998. In addition, outfielder Jones was named Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and catcher Greg Lagreid was selected at the Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete for baseball.

Marbut is just the fifth full-time coach to guide the Cougar diamond program since the 1920s and follows, among others, 32-year head coach Bailey and Brayton, who was at the helm for 33 years.

Marbut has won 285 games as Washington State’s head coach. In 2009, WSU posted its fourth-straight winning season, something the Cougars had not done since 1994 when a 35-26 mark capped a run of 37 con-secutive campaigns above .500.

In 2008, Washington State posted nine wins against nationally-ranked opponents, including a series victory over two-time defending national champion Oregon State. The Cougars also made an appearance in the polls, No. 28 by Collegiate Baseball. Paul Gran was an All-Pac-10 First Team selection and the conference’s defensive player of the year and Jayson Miller was named the Pac-10 Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The Cougars’ 2006 recruiting class was ranked 25th nationally and in 2007, WSU won four conference se-ries, at the time, the most by a Cougar team since the Pac-10 reunified in 1999.

In 2006, WSU’s 15-win improvement over 2005 tied for the greatest single-season jump in school history. WSU won conference series against Stanford and USC for the first time since the 1969 season, snapping a 23-game skid against Stanford in the process.

Additional highlights included three tournament titles and a national ranking (No. 28 by Collegiate Baseball) for the first time since the 1994 season.

In 2005, Marbut began the rebuilding process at WSU. After losing seven starters from the 2004 squad, the 2005 roster was comprised of 19 freshmen or first-year players. The youthful Cougars posted a 21-37 record, with 16 games being decided by two or fewer runs.

As an assistant with the Cougars in 2004, Marbut helped guide the team to a 29-26 record, WSU’s first winning campaign since 1998 and only its second since 1994. Marbut’s defensive prowess was immediately felt, with the Cougars setting a single-season school re-cord for fielding percentage (.971671). Under his lead-ership, the Cougars broke the record in 2008 (.971672), posted the fourth-highest mark (.971) in school history during the 2009 season and shattered the record last year with a .978 mark.

A Washington native born and reared at Aberdeen, Marbut is no stranger to baseball in the Pacific North-west. His background includes standout playing sea-sons at Aberdeen High School, Edmonds Community College and Portland State when the Vikings played in the old Pacific-10 Conference North Division.

His coaching pedigree includes Capital High in Olym-pia, two community colleges, Bellevue and Edmonds, and Washington State University as an assistant.

Marbut’s coaching career began at Capital High in Olympia, Wash., during the 1997-98 school year. In 1998 he was head assistant coach as the Cougars captured the state 3A championship.

Following his lone season at Capital High, Marbut was named assistant coach at Bellevue Community College for the 1999 season. In his one season at BCC, the club captured the NWAACC Northern Division title.

From Bellevue CC Marbut returned to Edmonds CC as head coach in 2000. While coaching at the school, he earned northern division coach of the year accolades in 2000, 2001 and 2003 and in two of those seasons, 2002 and 2003, Marbut was awarded NWAACC Coach of the Year honors.

During the 2003 season, he guided his team to a league record of 43 wins. Marbut completed his coach-ing career at Edmonds CC with a 152-38 record.

Growing up in Aberdeen, Marbut earned all-league honors three times in baseball at Aberdeen High. He also earned all-league honors three times in football and once in basketball. When he graduated in 1992, Marbut had set a total of six school records in three sports.

In the fall of 1992, Marbut enrolled in Edmonds Com-munity College. While competing for Edmonds CC, he was named to the All-NWAACC team twice as an infielder, 1994 and 1995. In 1995, he was also named the teams’ most valuable player.

After receiving his associate of the arts degree from ECC in 1995, Marbut continued his education and career at Portland State. During his first year with the Vikings, Marbut was named the team’s most offensive player.

GreggSWENSONAssistant Coach/Pitching Coach10th Season

Gregg Swenson enters his 10th season as the Cougar pitching coach. He has mentored 11 WSU hurlers who have gone on to pitch professionally. Swenson has spent 22 seasons as a coach, including 18 at the colle-giate level. He was on the Cougar staff that helped lead WSU to the NCAA postseason in 2009 and 2010.

Swenson’s primary responsibilities at WSU include coaching the Cougar pitchers, as well as recruiting and practice organization. He has handled academics, alumni relations, travel, scheduling and camp organi-zation while in Pullman. Academically, WSU produced three-straight Pac-10/12 Conference Baseball Schol-ar-Athletes of the Year (2008-10) and another in 2014, a Rhodes Scholar candidate (2013), and a back-to-back Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-American (2013-14).

In 2014, the Cougars had three shutouts in Pac-12 play, the most since 1988. Ian Hamilton set the WSU record with 15 saves and Matt Bower established the single-season mark for games with 31. Hamilton was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Base-ball and the NCBWA and All-Pac-12. Swenson’s staffs have twice set the WSU record for strikeouts in a sea-son, including the current mark of 453 (2009). During the 2013 campaign, WSU notched a 4.14 ERA, its best since 1988. Five of the top-six season totals for saves have come under Swenson. Adam Conley, a starter/closer for WSU, was selected in the second round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the then Florida (now Miami) Marlins.

Turnarounds have been a staple of Swenson’s time at WSU. In his first season, he inherited a staff that allowed a Pac-10 Conference-high 6.17 ERA in 2005. During 2006, the Cougars improved their ERA to 4.87 and fanned a then-school record 404. Before Swen-son’s arrival, Travis Webb had a 0-5 record with a 9.08 ERA in 2005. In one season under Swenson, Webb went 4-0 with a 2.17 ERA. He added eight saves and was an eighth round selection by the Cincinnati Reds.

After battling injuries during his first three seasons, Jeremy Johnson flourished under Swenson in 2009. Johnson went 6-2 with 10 saves, a 2.90 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 28 appearances. He was a 13th-round selection by the Cleveland Indians. Matt Way’s break-out year came in 2009 when he went 8-4 with a 2.43 ERA, 15th-best nationally. He set a WSI record with 124 strikeouts. He was the Philadelphia Phillies’ fifth round draft pick in 2009. In 2008, Jayson Miller went 8-1 with 74 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings. The Los Angeles Angels drafted him in the 30th round (2008). Swenson has been an assistant coach at the UW (2002-04). head coach at Tacoma Community College (1997-2001), assistant at TCC (1996) and assistant at Sehome High in Bellongham (1992-95). He has a degree in physical education/exercise science and physiology/sports psychology from Western Washington (1994). In 1997, he earned his master’s degree in teaching from City University. JoeROSSAssistant Coach/Recruiting CoordinatorFirst Season

Joe Ross was named assistant baseball coach at Wash-ington State University, Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut announced in June, 2014.

“We are thrilled to have Joe as part of our staff,” Marbut said. “His experience as a recruiting coordinator in the Pac-12 and an area scout for five years sets him apart among coaches in the Northwest. I have never been around as gifted of coach when it comes to catching and hitting.”

Ross is the Cougars’ recruiting coordinator and works with the hitters and catchers. A native of St. Paul, Minn., Ross brought 30 years of successful coaching experi-ence to Pullman. He worked as a scout for the Seattle Mariners from 2010-14.

“I love the relationship with players and coaches” Ross said. “I am excited to be here and have the opportunity to once again compete and win games.”

From 1980-86, Ross was the head coach at Wiscon-sin-River Falls where he led the Falcons to back-to-back NAIA District 14 titles (1984-85) and was named district coach of the year twice. During the 1980-83 seasons, he was also the head coach in the Hoofdklasse Baseball League in the Netherlands.

Ross left Wisconsin-River Falls to become the head coach at Normandale Community College in Bloom-ington, Minn., and served in that role from 1987-92. The Lions captured six league championships, three state ti-

tles, four regional crowns, two NJCAA district flags and appeared in the NJCAA World Series twice (1998, 1990).

Ross posted a 180-38 record at Normandale and re-ceived three Minnesota Community College Confer-ence, four NJCAA Region 13 and two NJCAA North Central Coach of the Year honors.

From 1990-92, Ross also spent time as a coach with the United State Baseball Federation. An assistant for the Olympic Festival team in 1990 and the Junior National squad in 1991, Ross skippered the 1992 Junior National team to a silver medal at the World Games in Mexico.

Ross joined the NCAA Division I ranks when he became the top assistant coach at Washington in 1993. Elevated to associate head coach in 1997, Ross spent 17 seasons with the Huskies. He oversaw Washington’s recruiting efforts, coached catchers and ran the Huskies’ offense during games.

Washington’s recruiting classes were ranked in the top 30 nationally six times by Collegiate Baseball. The Hus-kies ranked in the top 12 nationally in home runs each season from 2003-06. Players coached by Ross account for 79 percent of the spots in the Huskies’ single-season top 10 for at bats, batting average, doubles, hits, home runs, runs, RBI, stolen bases, triples and walks.

Ross earned his bachelor’s degree in 1982 and his mas-ter’s degree in 1986, both from Wisconsin-River Falls. He and his wife, Laurence, have two sons, Alex and Luke.

The Cougars roared to a 14-2 start and cruised to a 27-4 mark in the regular season, including a 12-2 record and first-place finish in the Pacific Coast Conference Northern Division. WSC swept a pair of games in Pullman against Stanford to capture the PCC crown and trav-eled to Omaha, Neb., for the first College World Series at the site. After defeating Tufts in the opener, future Major League pitcher Gene Conley and Rod Keough pitched back-to-back complete game victories over Alabama and Rutgers, respectively. WSC was routed by Texas and the Longhorns defeated Rutgers to set up a winner-take-all game with the Cougars. Despite three hits by shortstop Eddie Coleman, the Cougars were blanked 3-0 and finished national runner-up with a 32-6 record.

Washington State won 16 of its first 17 outings, including 12-straight to open the season, and rolled to a 29-6 regular season record. The Cou-gars won the Pacific Coast Northern Division at 14-4 and hosted Stan-ford in the NCAA District 8 Playoff. In the opener against the Indians, Harold Brunstad plated two runs with a double in the eighth to lift WSU to a 2-1 victory and the Cougars routed Stanford 13-3 in game two to give head coach Bobo Brayton his first trip to the College World Series. In Omaha, Neb., WSU split its first two games, defeating Texas and losing to Ohio State. The Cougars edged Connecticut by a run to set up a rematch with the Buckeyes that turned out to be a classic. Steve Arlin struck out 20 Cougars and Ohio State pushed across an unearned run in the 15th inning for a 1-0 win that ended WSU’s season. The Cougars finished fourth in the nation according to Collegiate Baseball.

COLLEGE WORLD SERIES

After a 6-3 start, Washington State ripped off 15-straight wins and went on to post a 26-6 regular season record. Included in the winning streak were five wins by Jerry Bartow, including four of his school single-sea-son record 10 complete games. The Cougars won the Pacific Coast Conference Northern Division with an 11-3 mark and hosted USC with the PCC title and NCAA District 8 spot in the College World Series on the line. Bartow bested the Trojans on a six-hitter in the opener and Bill Rich, who batted .422 in 90 at bats during the season, drove in all five runs in game two and the Cougars swept the series. In Omaha, Neb., Bradley defeated WSC 4-3 in the opener and New Hampshire handed Ron Aiken his only loss of the season to eliminate the Cougars.

The Cougars won their final 10 regular season games to finish 39-12 and win the Pacific-8 Conference with a 16-2 record. Washington State hosted the NCAA West Regional where the Cougars blasted four home runs, including three off future big-league hurler Mike Scott, to defeat Pepperdine in the opener. WSU took two of three games from Cal State Fullerton behind a pair of wins from tourna-ment MVP Bob Sherwood and advanced to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. At the CWS, Washington State scored in five of the first six innings and defeated Oklahoma in the first round before losing to Arizona State and Maine to end the season 43-15.
