WELCOME TO VIRDEN

The Town of Virden is located in the southwest region of Manitoba along the TransCanada Highway west of Brandon.

The town was known originally as “Gopher Creek” when it was first set-tled by pioneers looking to carve out a new life as farmers in the west. When the Canadian Pacific Railway finally reached the area in the 1880s the town was renamed Virden. Due to the ideal flat landscape, the railway segment stretching from Oak Lake to Regina actually held the record for the largest span of tracks in the world to be com-pleted within one season. The railway is also the reason for what visitors and residents may notice in the strange an-gle of the town streets and buildings. In order to get the best bridge footing for the tracks, they were laid from south-east to northwest.

Virden has stately old homes that have been preserved from the turn of century.

Virden was recognized for its lovely well-kept landscape. It was named “Most Beautiful Town in Canada” by the 1996 Communities in Bloom.

In 1951 the town went through an uproarious change when oil was dis-covered in the region. At the time, the population grew, businesses sprang up, housing and construction flour-

ished, and pipelines were laid be-tween communities. The oil boom of Virden has been made in a documen-tary film entitled Eternal Flame.

Recently, Virden has experienced a second boom in the oil industry, creat-ing career opportunities, benefitting the community and economy and brining new residents to Virden.

The Virden Airport, R.J. (Bob) An-drew Field, was originally built during World War II as a Commonwealth Air Training Base. It now has a 4,000 foot runway, paved and lighted, which can accommodate most charter and commercial flights as well as the Life Flight program based out of Winni-peg.

VIRDEN POOL

From mid June to the end of August, the Virden swimming pool and its 100-foot curved waterslide provides enter-tainment for swimmers of all ages.

In addition to the large slide, the pool is also equipped with a paddling pool and miniature lion slide for smaller children, a short slide for the mid section of the pool, and two diving boards for the deep end.

Certified lifeguards and instructors of-

fer swimming lessons to all ages during the hot summer months, a water exer-cise program is offered, it is home to the Virden Golden Seals swim team and, of course, the pool is open to public swim-mers most afternoons.

The pool is conjoined with Tundra Oil & Gas Place and is a summer hot spot and wonderful place to enjoy the water, sunshine and fun.

ETERNAL SPRINGSIn the very early 1970s, a small group

of people decided there was a need for some stocked trout ponds for recre-ational use by all residents of the area.

Through strong fundraising efforts and donations of land from farmers surrounding the ravine, the Eternal Springs project became a reality. The building of two earth dykes with metal level control structures and high-level overflow facilities created what is

known today as the upper and lower ponds. Many other facilities such as cook houses, storage buildings, and barbecue pits were also constructed.

Though the project was temporar-ily abandoned in the 1980s, a group of individuals banded together in 1999 to revive the site and return it to its former glory.

In their quest to revive the property, the group rebuilt the dykes and added

a swinging bridge connecting some of the hiking trails and enhancing the use of the picnic areas.

Improvements are continuous and forthcoming. Future plans for the Eter-nal Springs projects include many more kilometres of hiking trails, increased picnic areas, and an enhanced day use area for less than perfect weather.

Most of the work completed at this site is volunteer labour so progress

is sometimes slower than everyone would like.

To reach Eternal Springs from Virden: Start from the lights at King Street and TransCanada Highway; continue north to PR #259; turn right onto PR #259 E (signs for Lenore); continue straight onto PR #463 E (signs for PR #254/Griswold); continue straight for 3.3 kms then turn right and take the next sharp left (in approximately 0.5 kms).

The Town of Virden has always been recognized for its beautiful flowers and picturesque and overshadow-ing trees.

In the summer of 1920, after wandering about town for a few hours, J.W. Wilton of the Winnipeg Tribune gave the town the moniker “Virden the Beautiful.” He

noted the attractive homes, neatly kept lawns, colorful gardens, and shady trees.

Virden has maintained its reputation as its citizens have taken a pro-active role, constantly beautifying and tidying the town. The hard work of many paid off in 2007 when Virden received five blooms with a special

mention for “Senior’s Contributions to Floral Display” through the Communities in Bloom program and again, more recently, when the 2010 Community Pride Certifi-cate was awarded for The Millennium Garden Project.

In September of 2012, Virden hosted the 14th Annual Manitoba Conference and Awards.

VIRDEN IN BLOOM

VICTORIA PARKThe area of lush grass and

overshadowing trees that is Virden’s Victoria Park was established June 22 of 1897.

In the years since its estab-lishment, Victoria Park has served the Town of Virden in many ways. In the past it has been the site of skating and curling rinks, a tourist camp, and a paddling pool. Currently the park is home to tennis courts, a play area for children, an amphithe-atre, public washrooms, and

ample space for the public to enjoy a picnic in the open air.

The beautiful monument that stands in the centre of Victoria Park was erected as an act of remembrance fol-lowing World War II. It com-memorates the soldiers who died serving our Country from 1939 to 1945.

The blue pump jack located along northern edge of the park represents an original oil well of Murphy Oil Co. Ltd. In production between 1955 and

1969, the well operated for a total of 4096 days and pro-duced 70,175 barrels of oil.

Since the erection of the Chevron Jubilee Stage am-phitheatre in 2000, Victoria Park has been the site of weddings, concerts, plays, memorials, and many other public gatherings. The con-struction of the stage was sponsored by Chevron Can-ada Resources to mark their 50th anniversary in the com-munity. The stage was also

meant to be a legacy of the Manitoba Summer Games, which were hosted by Virden in August of 2000.

The beautiful gardens and expansive grounds must also be acknowledged, as they have been skillfully main-tained throughout the years by the Horticultural Club, and now by the Town of Virden. Their hard work and dedica-tion have made the park a beautiful space to spend a summer day.

VIRDEN WELLVIEW GOLF COURSEVirden was introduced to golf in the 1880s by John

Harrison of Musselburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland. The golf course was officially opened Saturday, May 7, 1892.

Today the course has grass greens, an automatic water system, bunkers, cart rentals, club rentals, a newly renovated licensed clubroom and food service with cable TV and golf accessories. Tournaments are

held each year for men, women, seniors, juniors and mixed teams.

Golfers will enjoy the challenge of this great 9-hole course.

One of the most scenic sites for cross-country skiing in Western Manitoba is found three kilometres east of Virden.

The idea to start making cross-country ski trails for the public began in the 1970s when the Hellman fam-ily in Virden -proprietors of Virden Footwear - rented a

hall and held instruction classes for beginners. The Hellman family quickly began to break longer

trails through their property with the help of Terry McLean. The groomed trails were expanded every year and now span approximately five kilometres, winding through valleys and over hills.

The network of trails run through the property and range in their level of difficulty, from beginner, to chal-lenging ones for more advanced skiers.

The access to both trails is found on the far side of the parking lot.

The Hellman Ski Trails are free of charge.

HELLMAN’S SKI TRAILS

The gun club is located in the beau-tiful Assiniboine Valley, just north-east of Virden, off of PR #259. The scenic location, along with excellent ranges and facilities, make your shooting experience all that it can be. We welcome all inquiries regarding membership.

The gun club ranges include a 300-yard Rifle Range and four 40-yard Pistol Ranges. The ranges are ap-proved to accommodate centre fire rifles and pistols as well as muzzle-

We invite you to visit our Museum and take a “wonderful trip back in time” while learning about our local cultures and his-tory. Our large collection is housed in a unique brick veneer home which was built in 1888, complete with turrets and

several annexes that were added in the 1970s and 1980s. We showcase a family home that displays the amenities avail-able to our ancestors in the Victorian Era.

In our annexes you will find a large dis-play section of military uniforms and arti-

facts, both past and present, plus antique tools and farming memorabilia including a Cutter and a Democrat Buggy, horse robes, foot warmers and buffalo coats to protect their owners from the harsh winter weather while travelling by horse and buggy. The museum is open daily from June to the end of August, Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Along with the shelves upon shelves of books that can be perused and loaned, the library also offers public access to computers as well as a se-cure wireless internet connection.

A feature of the library is their ac-cess to eLibraries Manitoba, where library members are able to search and download electronic books for a

specified amount of time before the file expires and is automatically returned to the eLibrary.

In addition to print titles and ebooks, the library also carries audio books, now in the form of Audio Playaway. All that is required to listen to these pre-loaded digital audio players is a pair of headphones.

Visitors are welcome to browse through the collection of local history books, and staff and volunteers are readily available to answer any que-ries.

VIRDEN CEMETERYSince its establishment on a parcel

of land south of town in the spring of 1883, the Virden Cemetery has been beautifully maintained and well cared for.

In 1926, the “Cross of Sacrifice” was placed in the cemetery in memory of

those who fought and died in World War I.

On July 4, 1982, the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. No. 8 (Virden), erected a cairn in memory of those who served in World War II from 1939 to 1945 as well as in the Korean War. Also on that

day, the stone chapel was dedicated in memory of the pioneers of Virden and another cairn was dedicated in loving memory of those pioneers who lie in unmarked graves.

The cemetery is located on SE 1/4, Section 16, Township 10, Range 26 WPM. For those wishing to locate the gravesite of a loved one, please contact Murray Wooldridge at 204-748-5032.

On August 5, 1989, the very first Farmer’s market was held in Virden at the site of the old Creemee which was located across the TransCanada Highway. Twenty-six years later, although now in a different, but permanent location, the market is still going strong. The Virden Farmer’s Market offers local fresh produce, jams, baking, and much more. The market has added several new vendors over the past couple of years, to the point where they occasionally have more vendors than spaces; the Farmer’s

Market board hopes the trend will continue and new vendors are always welcome.In early years, the market had a strict policy that vendors must make it, bake it or grow it. This has been expanded over the last while to include some trades/busi-nesses who resell products; however, the board wishes to maintain a majority of vendors who produce their own goods to stay true to the farmer’s market concept.Located on Sixth Avenue, just south of the CPR Heritage Centre, the Farmers Market is held every Friday, May until September, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS TUNDRA OIL & GAS PLACE

In April of 2012, a group of area investors, known as Virden Hockey Ventures, purchased and relocated the Winnipeg Saints of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League to Tundra Oil & Gas Place in Virden. The team name and logo were unveiled approxi-mately three weeks later. The name, of course, coming from Virden’s rich oil heritage.

In the fall of 2012, the Oil Capitals took to the ice in their inaugural sea-

son to a packed house; a trend which continued throughout the year; having the second-highest average atten-dance in the league.

The Caps had an impressive second season, making it into the post-sea-son. They defeated the Swan Valley Stampeders before bowing out in the second round to the Dauphin Kings.

The Virden Oil Capitals are now, and will continue to be, a very important part of Virden’s culture.

The recreation complex opened in the summer of 2011 and offers a 500-seat banquet hall, year-round ice in the NHL sized skating arena which seats 1,200 and is now home to Virden’s MJHL team, the Oil Capitals. It also is home to a fitness centre and swimming pool changerooms.

The complex is available for conferences, tradeshows, exhibitions, and social gatherings. It is also home to the Virden Indoor Rodeo.


The organizing committee and the many volunteers would like to ex-tend a warm welcome to the Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze Au-gust 13 to 16, 2015.

From humble beginnings, this showcase of the sport of rodeo has grown to become the community’s foremost event of the summer sea-son. The Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association (MRCA) has voted it “Rodeo of the Year” multiple times over the past decade.

Sanctioned by both the MRCA and the Canadian Cowboys Asso-ciation, the Virden Indoor Rodeo

attracts entrants from Canada, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.

It all gets underway on Thursday with a host of happenings down-town, including a kickoff barbecue in scenic Victoria Park, sidewalk sales, a children’s mini-carnival, a rodeo queen contest, mechanical bull, and the ever-popular human chuckwagon races.

After a hearty pancake break-fast Saturday morning, the parade winds its way through the town. High school rodeo highlights the after-noon, as contestants from all over

the province compete in ten events to earn the coveted title of high point cowboy or cowgirl. It’s always a great time at the Daze Dance, fea-turing live entertainment, later in the evening.

The Manitoba Pennwoods Draft Horse Futurity, as well as a 3D bar-rel racing jackpot, take place both Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday afternoon, head to the track just minutes east of town and take in the demolition derby.

♦ Dorothy Ferguson - Born and raised in Virden, Dorothy Ferguson was one of the 57 Canadian girls who were recruited to play in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League during the war years. She was both an infielder and outfielder who played for the Rockford Peaches from 1945 to 1954.

♦ Carman Lapoint-Young - In September 2010, this Virden-born woman was appointed the Under Secretary for the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Service of the United Nations.

♦ Terry McLean - Born, raised, and still living in the area, artist Terry McLean is well known for his paintings depicting various wildlife, the North West Mounted Police, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

♦ James Murray - The 1967 Los Angeles Kings defenceman was born in Virden.

♦ Dave Rockola - Known for inventing the famous Rockola Juke Box in the late 1930s, Rockola’s family moved away from Virden when he was 14.

♦ James Treliving - Long before he stepped into the public eye as an investor on CBC’s ‘Dragon’s Den’, Virden-born Treliving co-founded the Boston Pizza Restaurant chain.

♦ Lila Bell Wallace (nee Acheson) - Born in Virden, Wallace’s family relocated to the United States when she was a small child. She married DeWitt Wallace and together they co-founded Readers Digest in 1922.

Lions Campground serves Virden and area campers with: 40 full service pull-through sites (30 amp, water/sewer); 15 partially serviced (15 amp, water); 10 tent camping sites; six show-ers in two bathroom sites; children’s playground.

The campground is located on the south side of Government Road (PR #257), near Virden Collegiate (Corner

of Kent Street and Seventh Avenue). Many mature trees and grass/sand sites make for comfortable camping near Gopher Creek and the Fish Pond.

LIONS CAMPGROUND

The Canupawakpa Trail was devel-oped by the West Souris River Con-servation District as a self-guiding interpretive trail. Since it first opened, the trail has become an important tour-ism attraction for the region. Tourists, school classes, and locals have en-joyed this trail as it is both a scenic and educational walk. The trail is located

near Reston. From the town, go 1.2 kms east on Highway 2 and 2.4 kms north.

Comments about the trail have been written by people from as far away as Milan, Italy and Paris, France, and are an indication of its success.

Canupawakpa Trail might best be described as the “Jewel of the Pipe-

stone”. Here, the story of the riparian zone’s importance unfolds, as Pipe-stone Creek snakes its way through a river bottom forest, surrounded by a tranquil country setting.

The name, Canupawakpa, is a Sioux word meaning Pipe River, earned from a peace pipe found here in 1876.

An interesting aspect of the trail is

the variety of wild plants, including several edible kinds. For example; pin cherry, wild plum, Saskatoon, rasp-berry and chokecherry are all found here.

The Auditorium Theatre is truly a Centennial landmark in Virden. It is part of the Civic Cen-tre Complex located on Wellington Street West. “The Aud” as it is affectionately known, was built in 1911 by architect W. A. Elliott and contractor W. T. Manser. It opened February 29, 1912 and celebrated its 100th birthday in 2012.

This beautifully restored 500-seat theatre of-fers a seven-foot grand piano, sound system, and excellent acoustics.

The Auditorium Theatre continues to inspire strong support for the performing arts within the area and beyond.

The concert series features national and inter-

national performances including the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

Local service clubs, school plays and musi-cals, band concerts, choirs, and local theatre groups entertain on this stage yearly. The Virden Music and Arts Festival is held here over several weeks.

River Valley Historical Society maintains this rural school museum, campground, and picnic area. The museum is open for viewing by appointment only.The picnic area has a shelter and playground equipment. It is a beautiful spot to visit, set in the Assiniboine Valley.


HISTORICAL WALKING TOUR OF VIRDEN

Virden is a town that prides itself on trees, bushes, and flowers, a far cry from what it started out as - flat, empty prairie. Virden today is a hub of the cattle, agricultural, and oil industries.

Virden Historical Tours give you a good background of the town and the story before the coming of the first Canadians. We go back as far as the

Great Inland Sea… and the sea mon-sters that went with it.

Tours deal with the stern-wheelers on the Assiniboine River and famous Fort La Bosse.

The tour usually takes a little more than two hours of walking. For a young frontier town, Virden has a wealth of stories to be told.

You will witness, if you’re lucky, a Great White Shark. The tour mainly deals with the west side of town, though we do visit “The Flats”.

In 1990, the Virden Community Arts Council appealed to the town of Virden for space in the basement of the Civic Centre to store costumes. Since then, well over twenty thousand items have been donated to the volunteer-run or-ganization.

In 2004, when their basement stor-age facility became too small for their impressive inventory, the Costume Closet built a new home at 483 Sixth Avenue South. Though the new build-ing is much larger, it is still teeming with hats, shoes, dresses, coats, Halloween

costumes, and a variety of other intrigu-ing items.

Utilized by many different functions, costumes at the Costume Closet have been loaned out for school perfor-mances, Arts Festival and theatre pro-ductions, as well as schools, churches, and drama clubs all over Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Declared a historic site in 1994, the CPR Historic Centre located at 425 Sixth Avenue South was constructed as a re-placement when the original station was destroyed by a fire in 1899.

Though the station platform no longer serves as a waiting dock for passengers hoping to catch a train, the CPR Historic Centre remains one of Virden’s most rec-ognized landmarks.

Now in use by the Arts Mosaic, the one-of-a-kind station serves as a showroom for local artists and crafters. The main floor houses the Arts Mosaic offices, galleries, and the Prairie West Recreation office. In the summer of 2012 the Tourist Informa-tion Centre moved into the facility.

The second floor, which used to house the station agent’s family, is now home to Settlement Services, the Virden Commu-nity Chamber of Commerce, and a board-room which is available to businesses and groups for meetings and seminars.

Restoration efforts over the years have included the landscaping of the surround-ing lot and the creation of beautiful gardens of lovely flowers and plants native to Mani-toba, sponsored by Enbridge Pipelines Inc. As well, the front lawn serves as a unique picnicking site near to downtown businesses.

This beautifully restored CPR Historic Centre is truly a blend of history and func-tional service to the community.

The Millennium Garden on King Street is maintained by Communities in Bloom volunteers. There is also a small scale elevator which houses the pumping station used for

watering the garden. Virden in Bloom and the Town of Virden hosted the 14th Annual Manitoba Conference and Awards in September of 2012.

The lovely landscape also includes donated benches for visitors to sit and take in the view, as well as a monument to commemorate the Manitoba Games held in Virden in 2000.

Owned by Mark and Jill Humphries, Westwood Ranch and Garden Centre is one of Westman’s newest attractions and a destination for the whole family.

This spring and summer, visitors will see ducks, geese, and swans in a pond with a fountain.

Sheena the parrot greets guests. A variety

of animals make up their zoo collection - from cheeky lemurs to miniature donkeys and minia-ture horses, llamas, wallaroos and zebra.

The garden centre features seven greenhouses with the newest, with popular varieties of plants along with trees, shrubs and vegetables.

There’s a gift shop and snacks for sale such as

“tournados” and home style baking.“One of the things we are very keen on is groups

coming to our ranch and garden centre,” says Jill Humphries, referring to tours with school chil-dren, choirs, garden groups, and more.

Westwood Ranch and Garden Centre has a Halloween feature planned for fall.

Highway, Elkhorn, a thriving little com-munity of 500 people, is the first town in Manitoba.

Elkhorn originated in 1882 with ex-pansion of the railway. Due to its vast supply of water, it was a major stop for steam engines.

Unlike most communities these days, this little town is on the rebound, growing in all ways. It is the home of several organizations; volunteers be-ing the heart of the community. As well, Elkhorn has a very active Chamber of Commerce. Both the Town Council and the Chamber work for the better-ment of the community.

Elkhorn is a peaceful little town. Its main street has been upgraded includ-ing grass boulevards, curbing, side-walks, and drainage, and is a home to many essential businesses and more.

In 2000, a memorial archway was erected at the entrance to the town’s park. The pillars support several plaques of names of people who once lived, or presently live, in the com-munity. At the end of the main street stands the cenotaph. The Elkhorn Dis-trict Chamber of Commerce hosts and annual “Big Rig/Little Rig Show and Shine” which includes music, competi-tions, and a combination of events for all ages.

In July, the Agricultural Society will be holding its 120th Annual Country Fair, a full day for the whole family with riding competitions, heavy horses, sheep, craft displays and, of course, the goat milking contest.

Elkhorn’s Homecoming is celebrated every August long weekend.

Elkhorn’s new full-service camp-ground sits adjacent to the agricultural grounds, just a stone‘s throw off the TransCanada Highway.

Elkhorn’s best kept secret is its auto-mobile museum. It is home to over 120 antique vehicles, many classic cars, plus many exhibits of the past.

In the fall, the skating and curling rinks, both with artificial ice, come alive. Elkhorn is an active hockey town.

Wholesome, friendly hospitality, and fun events await visitors to the town of Kenton - part of the scenic Rolling River Route. The small town is on the edge of a ravine and slightly off the beaten path of the Trans Canada Highway. Travel about 17 miles (27 kms) north on Hwy #21 and a mile west on PR #259 and you’re there.

The town has a school, a credit union,

post office, restaurant, hardware store, food and farm stores. A car dealership, garage, Autopac, insurance agency, and lumber yard also serve the area.

Kenworth Dam - One mile south of Kenton on Hwy #21 and ½ mile west, the Kenworth Dam has been developed for camping, swimming, and fishing. The dam was first constructed on the Brierwood Creek in 1969.

Commune with nature along the groomed two-mile trail through the woods, or you can hike or bicycle into town.

tures an extensive display of 4-H memo-rabilia, a fully equipped pioneer kitchen, an agricultural room, adult and child’s bedrooms, and a historic R.M. office.

Celebrate Canada Day in Kenton with a pancake breakfast at the United Church. The Lions Car Rally takes place with registration at the Kenton Memorial Hall. The Woodworth Mil-lennium Museum will be open and the Harding Agricultural Society will serve a pit barbecue.

WELCOME TO THE Community of Oak LakeOak Lake, on Highway #1 near

the Assiniboine Valley, is rich with history. The original settlement was incorporated as a town on July 15, 1907 and the statue of Isaac the Ox at the town’s entrance commemo-rates the days of the ox-cart, an im-portant part of the past.

The town is home to many historic buildings and architectural points of interest such as the Pleasant Plains School built in 1894, the old stone blacksmith shop built in 1897, and

the post office built in 1930. The 1890 Anglican Church is a desig-nated heritage site.

Oak Lake has many amenities to offer travelers and tourists; a creamy, restaurant, food store, gas station/convenience store, spe-cialty food store, credit union, post office, churches, a school, and a floral garden park picnic spot serve the area.

A museum in the east end of town opens to visitors in July and August,

Saturdays and Sundays, or by ap-pointment.

A campground is conveniently located at the west entrance to town, near the fair grounds, with new washrooms and hot showers, a

cook shack, 10 well-treed electrical sites and tent camping.

A rolling nine-hole golf course with grass greens also has a club-house which offers light lunches and snacks.

Well, you asked for it, and this year we’re doing it. Yes, on the farm!

Since 2007, people have been vis-iting us for the fun of the hayride, pig races, bale pyramid, patch train, corn trail, spook barn, and, don’t forget the zip line and pumpkin slingshot, to name a few. The demand for our ginger-bread cookies and pumpkin pie at the concession stand continues to grow.

Who would have guessed that tons and tons of various coloured pumpkins and squash would grow our visitor numbers to 12,000 last year? Facebook pages are full of smiling pictures and stories of the great time families have enjoyed during their visit.

This year, an addition to our normal events of the Pumpkin Patch, Meand-her Creek Farm is opening its doors

to other family and corporate events. In 2013 we hosted our first wedding at the Farm. Just imagine, finding a place where the whole family can enjoy the wedding (especially the kids!). Photo ops are spectacular, just ask the photo professionals. Wide open spaces allow for dancing, not only in the Event Cen-tre, but anywhere your feet take you! The magic of the day, in the relaxed environment of the farm, are another “match made in heaven”.

Our family reunion calendar is prom-ising great memories, along with the photos and stories that are sure to be

remembered during the yearly celebra-tions that follow. What a great way to kickstart your reunion planning!

Our corporate event offerings are custom-tailored to your group, or can be incorporated into a fall day at our Pumpkin Patch. Either way, past company experiences have staff and organizations coming back, again and again.

Aspen Grove Campground is a lovely little spot to pull in for the night or spend a few days.

Ideally situated on the TransCanada Highway between Virden and Oak Lake, the 108-site campground offers several amenities to ensure summer fun for the family. Campers will enjoy a heated swimming pool, mini golf, a sand volleyball court, hiking trails, horseshoe pits, a playground, concession and grocery stores, new shower facilities, a Laundromat, and public Wi-Fi internet, among many other amenities.

Oak Island Resort is located 30 kms east of the town of Virden. It is situated on one of the largest lakes in the area, Oak Lake, with approxi-mately 15 square miles of water, teaming with pickerel, perch, and northern pike.

The resort is a renowned bird-watching paradise, and home to beautiful oak trees over 200 years old.

Birdtail Country Museum - Located on Bir-tle’s Main Street, this museum houses over 5,000 artefacts, including a variety of house-hold, military, archaeological, and aboriginal items. The main building, a former Union Bank, is arranged as a bank manager’s resi-dence from the early 1900s; there is a new feature display each year.
