Rocky D. Bull MascotUniversity of South Florida

Shortly after the university's inception in 1956, a contest was held that would determine the university's mascot. In the election, five finalists were selected: the Buccaneer, the Golden Brahman, the Olympian, the Cougar, and the Golden Eagle. The Buccaneer, which received the most votes, was originally not adopted because it was believed that a junior college in Pensacola had the same mascot. The Golden Brahman, which had lost to the Buccaneer by only three votes, was chosen instead. Students reasoned that, since Florida was a cattle-raising state like Texas, USF needed a mascot comparable to the Texas Longhorns mascot. So finally, on November 17, 1962, Rocky the Bull was unveiled as the USF mascot. The USF athletics teams were known as the Brahman Bulls until the earlier 1980s, when the name was simplified to the Bulls. At the start of the 2004 football season, the current rendition of the Rocky mascot costume was unveiled. In 2012 Rocky was ranked the 9th best mascot in the NCAA by Fox Sports. Also, in 2013 Rocky won the Capital One Mascot Challenge, besting Mike the Tiger (LSU), Sparty (Michigan State), and, in the finals, Raider Red (Texas Tech). Rocky is the first mascot to go undefeated in the Capital One Mascot Challenge.
