a look at the aMeriCan athletiC ConferenCeNot entirely unlike the nation that provides its namesake, the American Athletic Conference was born from an ideal in which members with ambitious goals are provided with the means to succeed in their quests for excellence.

With roots that extend to three conferences, the American Athletic Conference membership in 2014-15 consists of 11 institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, East Carolina University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, the University of South Florida, Southern Meth-odist University, Temple University, Tulane University and the University of Tulsa.

The 2015-16 season sees the U.S. Naval Academy join the ranks in football only.

Under the leadership of commissioner Mike Aresco, The American, which operated as the Big East Conference from 1979 to 2013, has immediate-ly taken a place at the forefront of Division I athletics, with schools that have played in four Bowl Championship Series games, won four NCAA men’s basketball titles since 1999, and won nine NCAA women’s basket-ball championships since 1995.

Two American Athletic Conference football teams were ranked in the top 15 of the final 2013 Associated Press poll. Five were selected for bowl games, including UCF, which won the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and finished the season ranked No. 10 nationally. The conference produced 14 play-ers who received All-America recognition by a major outlet.

The American had four players chosen in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, trailing only the SEC and the ACC among FBS conferences. UCF quarterback Blake Bortles highlighted a group of 12 American Athletic Conference players chosen when he was taken No. 3 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The success of The American in Year 1 was not limited to the gridiron. UConn won NCAA titles in both men’s and women’s basketball. The conference had the best postseason winning percentage of any league in men’s basketball, while The American produced top-10 teams in base-ball, men’s soccer and men’s golf and sent half of its participating teams to the NCAA Softball Championship.

The American Athletic Conference holds television partnerships with ESPN and CBS Sports which will give the conference unprecedented na-tional exposure. The football portion of the contract, which begins in the 2014 season, calls for nearly 90 percent of conference-controlled games on national broadcast or national cable platforms. The first American Athletic Conference Football Championship, which will be played in 2015, will be carried either on ABC or ESPN on Championship Saturday.

In men’s basketball, the television deal calls for all conference-controlled games to be televised, with more than 63 percent slotted for national broadcast or national cable – a minimum of 107 games. The entire postseason tournament will be televised, including the championship game, which will be either on ABC or ESPN. Sixty percent of the Ameri-can’s women’s basketball games will be carried on either national cable, regional sports networks or ESPN3.

American Athletic Conference teams will have access to the pinnacle of college football’s postseason structure. An American representative would be chosen for the College Football Playoff semifinals if it is among the top four teams following the regular season. Otherwise, the league would place its champion in either the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl or Peach Bowl if it is ranked higher than the champions of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference and the Sun Belt Conference.

Additionally, The American has announced primary or secondary part-nerships with 12 bowls for the next six-year cycle, ensuring multiple annual matchups against the nation’s top conferences and providing desirable postseason destinations to member institutions and their fans.

The American Athletic Conference administers to its membership from a state-of-the-art office located in Providence, R.I. The location of the conference headquarters – just steps from the city’s Amtrak station and 10 minutes from T.F. Green International Airport – gives the conference easy access to its member schools.

The conference headquarters is equipped with a complete video pro-duction studio, serving as the home of the American Digital Network, and small- and large-scale meeting rooms to accommodate the many coaches’ and administrators’ meetings held on-site each year.

The UConn softball team played as the No. 8 seed in The American’s inaugural tournament held in Houston, Texas last May.

Jen McIntyre is in her first season as head softball coach at the University of Connecticut. She most recently served as the associate head coach at Boston University for the 2014 season. The Terriers won the Patriot League tournament and qualified for the NCAA regionals and posted a win against Louisville.

McIntyre joined the Terriers after spending the last 12 years (2002-13) on the Penn State coaching staff, including the last three as associate head coach. During her tenure, PSU reached six NCAA tournaments, highlighted by a regional final appearance in 2011.

“I would like to thank the University of Connecticut for the incredible opportunity to lead its softball program into the future,” said McIntyre. “I am excited to build upon the rich tradition of the Husky program. The entire UConn athletic department has an incredible history and truly embodies the vision of a student-athlete. I am looking forward to repre-senting the Husky softball program on and off the field as we connect with the alumni, the surrounding community and fans. UConn boasts several championship caliber programs and I could not be more excited to get to work.”

“I am very pleased to welcome Jen McIntyre to UConn as our head softball coach,” said UConn Director of Athletics Warde Manuel. “Jen has great experience in developing NCAA tournament teams and I believe she will guide us to the same type of success here. Jen’s teams have had both athletic and academic success and she herself was an Academic All-Ameri-can during her playing days. I look forward to great things for Husky softball under her guidance.”

Twenty-one of McIntyre’s recruits at Penn State were named to All-Big Ten teams 33 times, while seven were placed on the All-Region squads with three becoming NFCA All-Amer-icans. In 2013, senior outfielder Cassidy Bell became PSU’s first-ever First Team All-American after batting a program-re-cord .456 at the plate and smashing 20 home runs.

McIntyre spent the 2000 and 2001 season at Indiana as the second assistant coach. During her time in Bloomington, three players were named to the All-Big Ten team.

A 1998 graduate of Penn State with a degree in kinesiology, McIntyre was the starting third baseman for the Nittany Lions from 1995-98. In 1997, she had a career year posting a .304 batting average over 53 games while leading the team in runs

scored (29) and assists (138). A 1997 CoSIDA Verizon Academic All-America selection, she ranks sixth all-time with 42 career stolen bases. Also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, she was named team MVP as a junior and team captain as a senior.

In May 2001, McIntyre earned her master’s degree in kinesiology/sports management and athletic adminis-tration at Indiana.

Adrienne Clark

assistant Coachfirst Season

Adrienne Clark, a 2005 graduate of Hofstra, is in her first season as an assistant softball coach at the University of Connecticut.

Clark joins the staff after three seasons as a volunteer assis-tant with Hofstra. After a successful undergraduate playing career, Clark returned to Hofstra in 2012 and was part of a staff that led the Pride to a 42-15 overall record and the program’s first-ever NCAA Regional championship. Prior to heading back to Hofstra, Clark spent three seasons (2009-11) on the staff at Columbia University where she worked with the Lions pitching staff and outfielders. She also served as an associate professor of physical education at Columbia. Clark also spent three years as an assistant at Delaware.

“Adrienne is the definition of a live wire and exactly what we were looking for from her position,” McIntyre said.

“She had a tremendous playing career at Hofstra and has been very successful in developing young talent. I am looking forward to working with her and watching her make a signifi-cant impact on our pitchers and catchers.”

During her playing career for the Pride, Clark helped lead the team to four straight CAA regular-season and postseason championships and three NCAA Regional appearances. She helped the team win 148 games during those seasons, includ-ing a school-record 43 victories in 2005. Hofstra went 8-4 in the NCAA Tournament over her final three seasons and was one of only 12 teams in the nation to win at least two NCAA Tournament games in 2003, 2004, and 2005.

Clark, a native of Gibsonton, Fla., holds a degree in business administration and marketing and graduated from Columbia in May 2012 with a master’s degree in sports management.

ChrissySchoonmaker

assistant Coachfirst Season

Chrissy Schoonmaker, a 2007 graduate of South Carolina, is in her first year as a member of the UConn softball staff in 2015.

Schoonmaker comes to Storrs after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Houston during the 2014 campaign. She worked primarily with the infielders and assisted in other areas. Schoonmaker spent the 2012 season at Texas Tech coaching the infielders while also serving as first base coach, base running instructor and coordinating the program’s camps. Prior to coaching with the Red Raiders, Schoonmaker spent two years at South Carolina as a volunteer assistant.

“I am very excited to welcome Chrissy to the UConn softball family. Chrissy exudes energy and passion in everything she

does,” said McIntyre. “She is a tireless recruiter and shares the same vision for our program and the University of Con-necticut. In addition to assisting with all aspects of the daily operations of our program, she will specifically work with our infield defense. Her previous knowledge of the conference will be a significant asset to our goals as we look to make our mark in the American Athletic Conference.”

A native of Sebastian, Fla., Schoonmaker began her coaching career in 2009 as an assistant softball coach at Dreher High School in South Carolina after wrapping up her eligibility as a student-athlete.

NEW COACH AT THE HELMUConn Softball has a new face at the helm of the program. Jen McIn-tyre, who came to the Huskies after serving as the associate head coach at Boston University in 2014, was named the head coach on July 7, 2014. McIntyre played at Penn St. from 1995-98 before taking jobs with the Nittany Lions, Indiana, and Boston University.

KEEPING THE CORE TOGETHERIn all, the Huskies return 81.3 percent of the total runs, 74.1 percent of the hits, 82.9 percent of doubles, 77.2 percent of the homeruns and 78.6 percent of the RBIs from a team that hit .237 during last season’s campaign. Additionally, the Huskies welcome back 84.6 percent of wins and 89.8 percent of total innings pitched.

NOT TAKING THE EASY ROADThe Huskies’ challenging 2015 schedule includes 14 games against teams that qualified for the 2014 NCAA Tournament and also features five contests against teams that finished last season ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Top-25.

HOME SWEET HOMEFans will enjoy 13 games at Burrill Family Field, beginning with the home opener against Boston College on March 26 at 3:30 p.m.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAINOn Jan. 25, McIntyre announced that Emily O’Donnell, Ashley LaPenta, Alyssa Gardea, Alyson Ambler, and Heather Fyfe will serve as team captains for the 2015 campaign. The Huskies are set to begin play on Feb. 20 when they challenge NIU in Troy, Ala. as part of the Trojan Classic.

NATIONAL RECOGNITIONOn Sept. 12, McIntyre was honored as the Division I Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for her work with Boston University during the 2014 season. The accolade salutes the efforts of coaches from the various NFCA membership categories for their tireless dedication to the sport of softball and to the continued education, growth and development of young women, both on and off the playing field. McIntyre coordinated recruiting, compliance, academics and strength and conditioning, plus coached the outfielders and offense, as the Terri-ers’ associate head coach during the 2014 campaign under Kathryn Gleason.

WELCOME TO THE AMERICANCompeting in their second season in the American Athletic Conference, the Huskies welcome ECU and Tulsa to the seven-team league.

Burrill Family Fieldat the Connecticut Softball Stadium

The Connecticut Softball Stadium has been in its present location since 1987. The facility has been the site of many postseason games, including the 1990 NCAA Regionals where UConn and Adelphi recorded a marathon 20-inning game.

The field was also the site of the 1992, 1993, 1997 and 1999 Big East Softball Tournaments. The Huskies have won two Big East Championships when hosting (1992, 1993).

The Huskies hold an 8-6 postseason record at the Stadium and boast an overall 304-148-2 record including 17 seasons with 10 or more wins and 17 seasons with five or fewer losses.

Bob and Barbara Burrill have been active supporters of UConn Athletics for more than 25 years. The Burrills have been long-time season ticket holders for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. The entire family -- including Christian (MBA ’07), Jessica (’01), Laura (’06) and Jeffrey -- are regularly seen at games cheering on their beloved Huskies.

Bob and Barbara are both UConn graduates (Class of 1974). Bob was a Managing Director at UBS Realty Investors in Hartford for many years before his most recent en-deavor into the real estate business.
