New Space Stimulates Kids' Senses Amonte wanders around large multi-colored tubes filled with bubbles and clambers over some mats until, tuckered out, he nestles in the lap of Jennifer Farmer, a member of our recreational therapy department. Janae, meanwhile, is mesmerized by long strands of light that hang from the ceiling. Children at St. Mary’s are flourishing because of amazing donors from the community like Lucy Oldfield, who gave a generous gift to create a sensory room designed to develop and delight kids’ senses. It’s also just plain old fun.

Kids Soar to New Heights Outfitted in a flight suit, helmet and goggles, John gets out of his wheelchair, enters a glass column and prepares for liftoff. Smiling broadly, he soon finds himself floating on air, well above the heads of onlookers ringing the vertical wind tunnel. Other kids, as well as St. Mary’s staff, family and friends, also took turns flying during “Soar with St. Mary’s” at iFLY Va Beach. The event raised nearly $2,200 to support more fun activities, like other trips into the community.

NEVER an institution, St. Mary’s is truly a ‘home.’ The uniquely skilled, warm-hearted people who take on this type of work are one of a kind. They provide a level of care that is unparalleled and they love our children as if they were their own.” — the mother of a young man who lives at St. Mary’s Home.

You, our generous donors, make it possible for us to provide a true home for 100 children and young adults from throughout Virginia who have severe, multiple disabilities. Because of you, our hard-working, dedicated staff members are able to provide medical care and therapeutic, educational and recreational services, with a loving touch.

Thank you!

Dear Friends, You do something remarkable. You make it possible for

the individuals entrusted to our care to enjoy “a good life” while benefitting from the best medical and therapeutic care.

We are so fortunate to have tremendous support from indi-viduals, corporations, foundations and organizations as well as public support from throughout our community. We can’t thank you enough.

This progress report is filled with members of the com-munity coming together for the children and young adults of St. Mary’s Home and The Albero House. You’ll learn how, because of you: • Children and young adults got out of their wheelchairs to fly • Our artists in residence filled a gallery with their masterpieces• The littlest children explored their community with their

young friends who don’t have disabilities • Special lighting, music and objects developed and delighted

kids’ senses in a new space• Kids breathed more easily because of new equipment • And so much more.

In 2015, we celebrated something else made possible by our friends in the community: 10 years at our current location. On Feb. 11, 2005, we moved from a somewhat cramped 1960s- era building in downtown Norfolk to a light-filled building with

twice the space, near Sentara Leigh Hospital. The project took six years, from planning and fundraising to designing to building — a massive undertaking that would not have hap-pened without the support of individuals and organizations throughout our community.

You change the lives of young people and of their families by investing in St. Mary’s Home and The Albero House.

Inspired and amazed. That’s how you make us feel.

In gratitude,

Auxiliary Board Focuses on Giving Kids a Good Life

The Auxiliary Board has been supporting the Home for more than six decades, working hard to fill needs St. Mary’s

otherwise could not meet. As current President Ann Gimbert says, the Board’s focus is “all about the children, and I don’t think you can have a better mission or a better goal than that.”

In 2015, the Auxiliary held its 10th Annual Gala and Auction fundraiser, which raised nearly $100,000 and had record attendance, with a sold-out crowd of 350. The Board has funded, among other things, lessons through the EQUI-KIDS therapeutic riding program, respiratory therapy vests, and tuxedoes and other items for St. Mary’s annual prom.

THANK YOU

A idan, Braeden and other kids proved you

can’t have too many cooks in the kitchen when they spent several hours on a January day with volun-teers from PRA Group, a big supporter of St. Mary’s Home. They whipped up a cake using adaptive equipment, such as a large switch attached to a mixer, as well as the helping hands of the volunteers. They also enjoyed arts and crafts time.

What a generous – and fit – group! Thank

you to Team Checkered Flag Volkswagen for raising more than $7,000 for our kids while training for the Shamrock Half Marathon. Brandon was there to greet them when they stopped by St. Mary’s to present a check. Special thanks to Todd Collins, then-general manager of Checkered Flag Volkswa-gen & Hyundai, (back row, far left) for organizing this effort.

Thank you to Children’s Specialty Group

and The Camp Family Foundations for returning as sponsors of our Friday Forums series of free pub-lic talks. Frank Aiello III, M.D. launched the 2015

series with a talk about the benefits of an infant and toddler program. Joining him were Nicole Hoskins Jones, CTRS, St. Mary’s director of recreational therapy, and Erin Vicinski, our early intervention technician. Later, Katrina M. Lesher, M.D. spoke about using technology to maximize indepen-dence, and Ynez Peterson, OTR/L, assistive tech-nology specialist for the SECEP REACH Program, reviewed how to select toys to create independence and stir children’s imagi-nations.

Families came to St. Mary’s on a warm

June day to join their children and our staff at an end-of-the-school-year cookout. Special thanks to Lynn Earle, dietitian and director of food services, who was instrumental in preparing food for every-one to enjoy; that’s Lynn at left with Itina Spellman of PRA Group. Thank you also to our amazing vol-unteers from CarMax in Virginia Beach and PRA Group, who worked hard to help with the grilling and serving.

Our friends from Sertoma Club of

Norfolk visited the Home and brought $5,000 for a bed that can be easily raised or lowered. Sertoma, which meets community needs through volunteer

service, has supported St. Mary’s for several gen-erations and has donated more than $40,000 to the Home in the last decade. Thank you, Sertoma!

Isaiah and Jorge had a great time at the

Children’s Museum of Virginia in Portsmouth with members of Chartway’s We Promise Foundation and Camp Horizon staff. They were among 16 children and young adults from St. Mary’s who were able to attend Camp Horizon, a program of the The Up Center, over the summer because of a generous $25,000 gift from the We Promise Foundation, the charitable arm of Chartway Federal Credit Union.

Jenny and other kids had such a fun day

participating in a commu-nity dog walk and enjoying food, music and activities for kids and dogs! The “Walking with the Wolf-hounds” event at Saint Patrick Catholic School benefited St. Mary’s as well as other charities.

Adrian took a break from playing in a

bounce house to greet our

good friends from Beach Ambassadors. The group’s Battle of the Beers event in October raised $10,500 for our kids and young adults! Beach Ambassadors have volunteered at St. Mary’s, helping children swim in a therapy pool, assisting with therapy dogs at the Home and decorating for a fall festival.

Holiday festivities got a rockin’ start with the

annual Christmas party our good friends from the Kerneos company threw in our Atrium for the children and young adults, like T.J., plus staff. As always, there was lots of great food, gifts and danc-ing – even a conga line!

When two big snow-storms struck

Hampton Roads, many staff members voluntarily spent the night during the bad weather, sleeping on mats on classroom floors and pulling double shifts to make sure the children and young adults continued to get the care they need. Oth-er employees with sturdy vehicles picked up their colleagues who did not have access to transpor-tation. Their dedication caught the attention of WVEC-TV reporter Joe Flanagan. Thank you to our amazing staff!

When Melina and Katie visited

Dickens’ Christmas Towne at Nauticus in downtown Norfolk, a stranger stepped up to pay for their photo with Father Christmas. Thank you for sharing the holiday spirit! The act of kindness was featured in the “How Nice” column of The Virginian- Pilot newspaper.

We were delighted to receive a $1,750

donation from the Staff Officers’ Mess at NATO’s Supreme Allied Com-mander Transformation headquarters. That was their seventh December donation in a row. We’re so thankful for their ongoing generosity!

We are so grateful for our many generous

supporters, who think not only of the kids who live here but also bring gifts for their families. Thank you to Douglas Werner and Cubs for Christmas, a group of friends who get together at Build-a-Bear to make bears to give to kids over the holidays. They donated 20 Build-A-Bears for our social workers to hand out to the kids’ siblings.

Passion for Painting Colors Our Walls Jorge looks at the red ribbon in front of him and at the children and young adults, staff and friends gathered in a hallway with colorful paintings of flowers, animals and even Michael Jackson. “Thank you St. Mary’s, for all of the workers working hard,” Jorge, president of St. Mary’s Art Club, tells the crowd at the grand opening of our Artists-in-Residence Gallery, created with advice from the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach. He turns toward Shirley Justice, our community liaison, and artist Karen Ludwig, who volunteers with the club, and adds, “And thank you for helping me, making my dream come true.”

A few months later, Jorge moved back home. He left us a gift that hangs in our lobby: a painting of Embrace, our mermaid statue.

Community Helps Kids Breathe EasierIn the last few years, we’ve enhanced our services by bringing in some new professionals, including a respiratory therapist, Terri Flannery, CRT. That’s Terri with her buddy, Nate. A number of young people who live at St. Mary’s Home and The Albero House are breathing easier because of Terri — and because of the generosity of our friends at the Millers Foundation. A $5,740 grant made it possible for us to buy a VitalCough System by Hill-Rom that stimulates coughing to keep the lungs clear.
