Check out the silver rose bowl the next time you go into the Sooke Region Museum, and youll not only view a prized memento but also have the opportunity of admiring a prime example of the community leadership and great legacies with which the Sooke Lions Club have endowed the Sooke region.

Sookes population numbered 5,800 in 1976 when the club took on the building of a regional museum to serve one of the first settlements on the west coast where an incom-ing immigrant population was welcomed by the people who had fished and hunted here for centuries, the TSou-ke Nation.

Celebrating the opening of the museum in June 1977, the Sooke Lions sipped cham-pagne from a rose bowl, as the keys to one of their finest accomplishments were turned over to the Sooke Region Historical Society president, Ken Shepherd. Ben Mutch is at left, while John Farmer (with a daughter on his shoulders) grins at Milt Gibson as Milt enjoys the bubbly. Next to him is Cliff Beange, while Roy Girling is on the right. Tuck Vowles, then Li-ons president, tossed some of the champagne to christen the new building. Ray Vowles, a longstanding Lion, has also served many years as president of the historical society.

It was the 26th of March, 1965 when the president and secretary of the Lions Club International signed Sookes charter. Recognized as charter members were Bob Anderson, John Bartanus, Art Brooks, Doug Brownsey, Percy Buttrum, Tom Cleough, Walter Conder, Lew Dempsey, George Diamond, Eddie Eve, Hans Felderhof, Milt Gibson, Robert Gibson, Jack Goldie, Bill Greenhough, Fred Henry, Larry Hunt, Jack Keating, Tommy Lowe, Eugene Maglio, Fred Oakes, George Oliver, Dave Reid, Brian Perry-Whittingham, Ed Robertson, Ken Shepherd, John Slemko, Robert Smith, Larry Sutherland, Leo Teygeman and Art Weberg.

Many, many others have joined the club over the years, contributing their efforts unstintingly towards undertakings to better the life of our community and in the wider world beyond. Today the local membership numbers about forty.

Early on, the Sooke Lions took on compiling a Sooke region telephone and business directory. In 1968, this booklet contained 32 pages. Today, the publication carries 144 pag-es of ads and listings plus a detailed street map.

FIFTY YEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE One of the fun events which the Lions organized to raise funds for their charity pro-jects was the annual Leechtown Night, started in 1969 and held in the Sooke Community Hall for two decades. These happenings were attended by all and the costuming remembered as both glamorous and hilarious.

Countless barbecues and hamburger sales are handled by the Lions each year, wheth-er it be part of fund-raising fishing derbies, bluegrass festivals at the Sooke Flats or wherever help is needed. Their support of salmon enhancement and hatchery production efforts means they contribute regularly to the work of the Jack Brooks hatchery on Rocky Creek.

Restoration of the historic Muir cemetery on Maple Avenue was a long-held goal of the Lions. Working in tandem with several other local organizations, restoration and renewal of the cemetery as a special place of respect was accomplished in May of 2001. Another Lions project is the ongoing maintenance care of the Sooke Harbour Cemetery in Saseenos.

Among the noteworthy community endeavours that our Lions support are the Sea Cadets, youth sports, Sooke Food Bank, Sooke Christmas Bureau, Breakfast with Santa, Sooke Crisis Centre, hearing foundation, safe Halloween activities, Camp Shawnigan, the Sooke Fall Fair. The Lions have a tendency to arrange a work party and quietly go to work helping out with any misfortune, possibly a wheelchair ramp is needed, or whatever problem needs help. Good hearted is their operative word!

If January is a time for doldrums, Sooke Lions saw the opportunity for a Hard Times dance; tickets cost next to nothing, the menu is wieners and beans, and everyone has a ball. In contrasting style, on December 31st, 1999, Lion Lorne Christensen convened the elaborate once in a lifetime Millennium Ball which provided champagne glasses and great memories as mementos.

Canada Day has been a well-attended event at the Sooke Flats for many years now, and recently the Sooke Lions have undertaken to carry on the organizational responsibility for this community demonstration of patriotism. First ever of the Sooke Lions to become Dis-trict Governor was our own John Wilson. Lion Al Beddows followed in Johns footsteps as Dis-trict Governor and in 2011 was able to bring 400 Lions to the new Prestige Hotel for the Dis-trict Convention.

Memories we all have in spades, of events that the Sooke Lions have participated in, but perhaps no memory brings more laughs than the year, 1990, that we celebrated the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the Spanish landing at Whiffin Spit. The Sooke Festival Society was the organizer, and Tuck Vowles was the Lions representative to the Society.

The sailing vessels re-enacting the journey of discovery were approaching the scene, the 200 commemorative cakes were all lined up under tents, welcoming fires were lit on the Spit, crowds were beginning to gather, and then the winds came!
