SOCIAL MEDIAMANAGEMENT
(AKA: We have a chapter Twitter, now what?)
STRATEGY & SECRETSFacebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, & Tumblr
Facebook Pages & Twitter
• Content can include a little bit of everything• Easy to schedule posts in advance & analyze
impact• Perfect for spotlights, shout-outs, and kudos• Majority of brothers/potentials have one• Hashtags make it easy for brothers to find
your content • Easy for brothers to participate, retweet, etc.• Get attention from your university’s officials
& get positive PR for your chapter
Facebook: Pages v. Groups
• Pages are more suited for..– Your public chapter profile– Lots of recruitment event information– Creating and promoting major public events – Public announcements (awards/achievements, cool
stuff, etc.)– Photo albums from special events or highlighting
chapter life
• Groups are more suited for…– Chapter-only announcements (when to show up for a
service event setup, call for more members, etc.)– Linking to APOonline events– Miscellaneous announcements and shout-outs (free
food, carpooling to events, etc.)
Instagram, Pinterest, & Tumblr
• Extremely visual in nature• Use as way to showcase pictures, videos,
and promote interesting content and events• May be less formal in tone of content• Can repost general APO content as well as
chapter specific content• Host platform-unique events– Host #TBTs, digital scrapbooks, etc. – Spotlight on crafts and chapter life– Create blogs, guestbooks, or other digital
memories
Managing the Work
• Use programs like Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, or internal tools in Facebook or Twitter to make your posts in advance.
– As of 8/13, Hootsuite now supports Instagram!• Consider having a committee dedicated to
posting on your social media (Pre-approve the content as a group & give everyone a night or a specific platform to post on.)
• Collect photos and information from your brothers for use on your social media.
– Facebook photo galleries, scanning photos from Historians, and talking with alumni are all excellent ways to find old and new photos!
General Tips & Tricks
• Make a matching graphics set for all of your social media platforms + website.
• Keep it classy and positive.• Provide links to each platform on every site.• Give each site something different to do. • Update your signature media and pictures at
least once a year to keep things fresh.• Make sure to alternate your posts with things
that will interest each part of your audience - from alumni to current members, and potential members to APO brothers at other universities.
