    EDITO

    Having opened its doors on May 1st and bringing together over 140 countries for the next six months, Expo Fair has become one of the top three most important economic and cultural organizations across the world. Spanning an area of 1.1 million m2 and hosting nearly 20 million visitors, this years theme is dedicated to technology that can ensure healthy and proper nutrition. As the Turkish Cosmetics Promotion Group we took our place at the fair as well with our informational booth from July 15th-31st. Once again, we continue our mission to bring and increase the awareness of the Turkish cosmetics sector abroad.

    Now lets look ahead and see whats in store for us: one of our goals is to attend the Cosmoprof Asia Fair in November, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. This years fair will take place between November 11th and 13th in Hong Kong where 10 Turkish companies will attend. Last year, Cosmoprof Asia covered an area of 82000 m2, hosted over 2,000 companies and with 60,000 visitors; it has become the largest cosmetics fair in the Asian Pacific region. We will be sharing detailed information on its introduction, development and outcome in the issues to come.

    In this new issue, you will come across our peace ambassador, or otherwise known as the olive and its effect on the cosmetic world, Cappadocias beauty and history, fragrances that reminisce love and how to redefine natural makeup.     When you go back and look at MG Gl-ieks history, which moment stands out for you? Actually each periods importance is different and vast. In a timeframe of 54 years we have always strived to be better, aim higher and be a pioneer in our field. Currently, we are con-tinuing our leadership in this sector with firm and steady steps. One of the most important features that make us a pioneer and distinguish us from everyone else is the work we do in R&D. Of the 4000+ raw materials that we use in the production of our fragrances, more than 200 of them are the raw materials that we have manufactured ourselves. This is what makes our fragrances unique and impossible to copy. We have four captive molecules, meaning the mo-lecular structures completely belong to us. We are close to finishing the infrastructure work and research at our new facilities and will soon establish the microencapsulation system sign-ing off on another first. A 5000 sq. meter syn-thesis lab, another first in Turkey, will be at our new facilities a total of 45.000 sq. meters. At the same time, we are also increasing our pro-

    duction capacity from 2500 tons to 33.000 tons.How did MG Gliek, this 54-year per-fume manufacturer, enter the scent world? How did you begin this adven-ture? I started my working life in 1961 in a small shop in Tahtakale as an essence wholesaler. After having set up this small business, I moved it from Tahtakale to Bahekap where I worked in a bigger store as a perfume whole-saler and began importing raw materials for perfumes. Once we moved to Bomonti in the 1970s, I noticed that with a team of 56 people our small production workshop was preform-ing much better than I had anticipated. While all these developments were happening, I sent my nephew, Erol Meulam to study and master perfumery on an international level abroad. In 1983, we relocated to a 6000 sq. meter factory in Ayazaa. As we are now celebrating out 54th year, we have begun automated production at our unprecedented new facilities in Gebze. We started full operation at our new facilities in June. At present, we have 200 experienced employees and work in collaboration with well-

    known perfumers on an international platform.What is MG Gliek's vision and mission? Our top priority is to manufacture according to national and international standards, to cre-ate the best product according to our custom-ers needs by following the trends closely in all the sectors we provide service to. To improve and grow without fear, we offer our customers with scientific, modern information and solu-tions. Basically, our initial goal is to please our customers by going beyond what they expect.Smell and fragrance are two different con-cepts, can we hear from you what you think of these two different notions?When smell comes to mind we first think of the perfumes we wear. Yes, smell and perfume may mean the same in some languages but in our area of expertise it covers all types of smell, including cosmetics, detergents, personal hy-giene products as well as several industrial products you may come across. For example, air cleaner sprays, scented paper, leather dyes, ink cartridges, plastic and rubber. We have separate field areas for each of these industrial products, which are manufactured on a large

    Trkiye'nin ilk parfm dergisi de projeleriniz arasnda yer alyor. Petals Magazine'den bahsedebilir misiniz? Sektrde her zaman nc olmay ve yeniliklerle

    sektrmze heyecan katmay ilke edindik. Petals

    ilk bata bir hayal olarak gndemimize girdi ve daha

    sonra pazarlama ekibimiz ksa bir srede bu hayali

    geree dntrd. Konusunda uzman editrlerimiz ve

    yayn ekibi olarak ok detayl bir alma yapyoruz. Yurt

    dndaki esans reticilerinden dergimizle ilgili vgl

    szler duymak bizi ok mutlu ediyor.

    Sizin parfm gemiinizde hangi parfmler var? Parfm ve kokularn dnyasna girdiim gnden beri

    kendime zel hazrladm kokular kullanmay tercih

    ediyorum. Son zamanlarda hafif oud dokunularna

    scale. Various industrial experiments and re-search is carried out here on customer expecta-tions. The result is a high volume of beautiful smelling products.What goals have you set yourself for 2015-2016? What are your investments and dreams for the future?Our primary goal for 2015 is to have the opening of our factory in Gebze, one of Europes most pres-tigious industrial sites, its construction has been completed and we are already in active produc-tion. We are establishing a system first of its kind worldwide and there is nothing like it in Tur-key in terms of technology. These facilities will have suit hotel rooms, cinema and entertainment rooms, a half-Olympic swimming pool, fitness and health center and a mosque. These invest-ments are towards creating a happiness center

    for our employees and colleagues, not just a factory. We believe that happy employees will have a greater contribution to research, development and produc-tion. Therefore we intend to achieve it. Our other goals for 2015 include increasing our export levels, growing our partnerships as well as increasing our shipping to international firms that manufacture fast moving consumer goods.Turkeys first fragrance magazine is amongst your projects. Can you tell us about Petals Magazine?We have always made a point to be a pioneer in this sector and bring innovation and excitement to it. In the beginning, Petals had entered our minds as a dream but soon after our marketing team was able to turn it into a reality in a short time. We carry out work in a very detailed manner with a team of expert editors and publication team. It truly makes

    us very happy to be praised and complimented on our magazine by our perfume manufacturers abroad.You closely follow trends worldwide, can you tell us what sort of innovations to ex-pect in the fragrance world?One of our greatest advantages in this area is that we work together with the sectors leading brands. Since we supply products to trendsetting brands, it helps us have an idea of what the next seasons trends may be. We can also foresee what scents will be preferred through the trend analyses our market-ing and product development departments study. Which fragrances are in your scent history? Ever since I entered the perfume and scent world Ive preferred to wear the scents Ive created specially for myself. Lately, Ive been wearing a perfume that has a light touch of

    Markalara zg konsept parfm tasarmlarnda nasl bir sre izliyorsunuz?Ben bu sreci biraz resim yapmaya benzetiyorum.

    Bir marka bize byle bir teklifle geldiinde nce o

    markay tanyp, nasl bir dnyaya sahip olduunu

    aratryoruz. Sonrasnda ise bu dnyaya uygun koku

    ierikleri alarak markann vermek istedii deerleri,

    en aklda kalc duyu olan kokuya yanstyoruz.

    Sonucunda da markann imzas olabilecek kokular

    tasarlyoruz.

    Son olarak kozmetik sektrn bizim iin dn ve bugnyle deerlendirebilir misiniz? Kozmetik sektr gnden gne artan nemi ve

    retim/tketim hacmiyle bizim de retimimizin

    byk bir yzdesini oluturuyor. Bu kadar hareketli bir

    sektrn iinde yer almak bizim iin olduka keyifli.

    Trk kozmetik rnlerinin ihracat seviyesi de son

    yllarda yksek ivmeli bir art gsteriyor, bu sayede

    bizim esanslarmz da bu rnlerle birlikte dnyann

    birok lkesinde raflardaki yerini alyor.

    oud, patchouli, vetiver and sandalwood.Amongst your projects you also produce special fragrances that represent Turkey. According to you what would be the scent of our country?Yes, we have worked on several projects about Tur-keys scent and continue to do so. In the last cou-ple of years we completed an 18-month project for Turkish Airlines and the result was a perfume titled TK1933. This scent has bergamot on top notes and floral notes at the heart. This year we created a spe-cial perfume for Turkish Cosmetics. Since Turkey and the cosmetics sector is in the foreground, the leading notes are rose, other rose-like scents and deep woody notes.How many perfumers are there within MG Gliek?15. Five of these expert noses are master perfum-

    ers who have been in the sector for many years. Through their experience, knowledge and creative power we have been able to sign off on many suc-cessful projects.As Turkeys deep-rooted fragrance compa-ny what sort of advice would you give to young and ambitious perfumers? To be a perfumer means to be patient and disci-plined, also to have a great principle to keep you awake and excited for many years. Other than edu-cating their noses and developing it, they should learn all the raw materials. Working with raw mate-rials will definetely add to a perfumer's imagination and thought process. In short, smell everything and constantly follow up on new raw material trends. What kind of a process do you undertake when designing special fragrances for brands?

    I compare this process a bit to painting. If a brand comes to us with a special brief, we first visit and get to know the brand, look into what kind of a world they have. Afterwards, we work towards creating scents that would fit that world with the values the brand wants and reflecting this in an enduring fra-grance. We design fragrances that could stand as the brand.Lastly, can you evaluate the cosmetics sec-tor for us from yesterday to today? As the cosmetics sectors importance is growing more each day so does its production/consump-tion volume. Being a part of such a dynamic sector is wonderful for us. The level of Turkish cosmetic products exported has accelerated at a high rate these last years and thanks to this our fragrances along with other products are on the shelves of many countries across the world.

    Gzde, what is your first memory or image of beauty?I'm a little girl... Backstage at my ballet recital, getting my makeup on. Mothers are helping their daughters with their stage makeup... I remember not blinking while I was trying to apply the thick mascara, the kind thats blotchy. Red lipstick and using that same lipstick as a blusher. To take it off we used the classic cream in the blue box that if you got in your eyes you were done for! And that bunit was important then and it still is today. Id never like the bun others would do for me. I was seven when I tried to do it on my own and ever since then I could put my hair into a perfect chignon just below my neck in just two seconds!As a woman have your ideas on beauty changed over the years?Of course it has, I realized that beauty takes ef-fort. You have to work to be beautiful. One-way or another, beauty is what keeps us women on our toes. But you definitely need other traits be-cause it doesnt work on its own. On its own, it has no depth, beauty becomes just an image. As a person grows up, they understand this much bet-ter and become wiser through life experiences.

    How did you decide to become a beauty editor? It was my dream in high school to become an editor, in fact Id write it in my diary back then. I started working as a style editor at Turkeys first shopping magazine, Sper, but I had nothing to do with fashion. My main goal was to research and write. My interest in beauty appeared during those times when the then Editor in Chief, im Gm noticed me and said, lets move you to beauty. I started by doing a few pages and soon enough the whole section was mine. I was extremely happy.What did you learn about the cosmetics sector when you were working at the mag-azine?I first learned this: as long as women are around this sector will never die. We want to be young and beautiful and will do anything for it. There are two areas where women dont shy away from spending money: one is on their children and the other is on their beauty. Therefore, this sector is also very open to human exploitation; there are so many options but unfortunately no direction nor guid-ance. Staff training is very weak and I think this is the biggest gap in this sector. Another important

    point Ive learned: Beauty is very innovative, con-stantly changing and as an editor you cannot stop it. When someone asks you about recent innova-tions you cant say you dont know, you always have to be informed. How do you think beauty should be com-municated?I believe that beauty and care should be topics communicated clearly because it can easily lead to confusion. A woman is a busy being, she does 30 different things at once. Therefore, topics on beauty and care should be clearer and easier to understand. Things said about beauty shouldnt just hang in the air, they should be solution oriented. Always re-member that beauty is special and different to each person: Whats good for you, may not be good for me and what works for me, may not work for you.What do you think of the current percep-tion of todays modern beauty? Do you think beauty still remains as a relative con-cept? Universal beauty principles such as thick lips, thin legs, strong hair, bold eyes, and pointed noses are beautiful for everyone. However, style, stance, fashion, aura, light are what add life to beauty.

I worked extremely hard to have a website that represented me and ex-plained who I was. What is Beauty On Airs vision and mis-sion?Everything we write about has been tested and we dont recommend what we dont like. Ive also started offering personal beauty consulting and

    continue doing this on my site. I use all of my experience and knowledge to make a womens life easier. You include the cosmetic prod-ucts youve tried and used in your own beauty and care rituals and sports activities. How do you set your radar? What sort of features should a product or a beauty care ritual have to be no-ticed?It really needs to work. When I choose or do my stories Im a woman, not an editor. And I come across all sorts of problems that each woman does. If its going to be news worthy, everything I try has to work. What do you think of plastic sur-gery and recent procedures that have become quite popular? The most important place plastic surgery has come is avoiding plastic surgery for a long time by using non-invasive methods. Even surgeons prefer delaying operations and would rather work around practices such as liposuc-tion, lip fillings and only Botox if re-ally necessary. Botox is truly a signifi-

    cant discovery because its applied through special methods and technology. The same goes for fillings. It is now possible to look beautiful and avoid nose operations and neck liposuctions through fillings. Where women lose control is the dosage. Women are always expecting a miracle so as they do these procedures they want more but that miracle hasnt been discovered yet. What kind of a world do you see in the fu-ture in terms of beauty?There are going to be more findings and projects on anti-ageing. But the world has finally understood that anti-ageing is a big wrong. We cant stop anti-ageing or prevent it with care, but we can continue in a more relatable manner. So I believe the idea, aging well will hold a much more important place in the future. We are going to direct ourselves to ageing well and staying young through what we eat, drink, supplements and applications we use.

    Actually, this is the best and healthiest way anyway.What was the most exciting innovation youve come across in the last few years?PRP. The idea that I can renew myself with my own blood is amazing. No allergic reactions, no additives or impurities. The healing is from within. It also makes a lot of sense. Your blood is taken and the blood platelets are separated through cen-trifuge processes. Pure blood platelets are injected into the skin. Since its injected into the skin, the blood platelets naturally begin to stimulate the healing and rejuvenation of the skin that had been lacking it so much. Dont expect a miracle after just one procedure. I can say that after few sessions wrinkles start to diminish and skin feels more luxu-rious. Best times are before and after summer.As a mother of two daughters, what kinds of advice have you given about beauty?Theyre still young but Ive already started to. The girls growing up now speak and mimic like their mothers, so Im trying to teach them to control their mimics on their foreheads. When they frown their eyebrows, I tell them to quickly laugh! Be-cause the wrinkles from laughter are the most beautiful, it gives a person light and charisma. Whereas, wrinkles from frowned eyebrows will create a tired, angry and older face. What products are always in your makeup bag? I always have a cream or serum that moisturizes my dry skin during the day. My other musts include: a bronzer that highlights my cheekbones, illuminat-ing pearl cream stick, natural colors like pink-beige, a matte rose lipstick that matches my natural lip color and brown mascara. Another essential prod-uct is my cream blush, which I sometimes apply just on my cheeks or on my lips for fullness.What do you think about the Turkish cos-metics sector? As a consumer and as an editor I am one of the hugest supporters of Turkish cosmetics. I truly believe that one day a global brand will come from us. The content and the technology we have is the same as the best international brands. Our biggest drawback is a lack of vision. Brands should not neglect consulting services, they should be bold.

    Can you share the story on how Sheida was established? What was the purpose behind embarking on this adventure? After years of work experience and work-ing with a team of professionals in makeup and skin care products, we wanted to create our own specific product range. With this thought in mind, we targeted one of the first makeup products dating back 4000 years; its underlying production had been on the mar-ket but it hadnt been used in modern cosmet-ics yet. After the inspiration we got from all the packaging we came across in our archives, we decided to bring it a modern outlook and created our first product, Kohl Powder under international standards (GMP). As Sheida makeup group, we continue to provide our customers with unique and extraordinary professional products in ergonomic packag-ing designs. Can you briefly tell us about the brands in your company?We were established as Nural D Tic. in

    1996. We entered the cosmetics market as one of the distributors of Jeanne Arthes per-fumes in Turkey. In 2001, we also took on Barbara Bort, one of Italys rooted colors cosmetic brands distribution rights in Tur-key and increased our knowledge of the sales and marketing in the color cosmetics area. With our own team of professionals we suc-cessfully positioned ourselves in over 300 select perfume stores across all of Turkey. With all the information and knowledge we had gained, creating our own brand was now a necessity. So, we began production under own brand, Sheida from 2009 onwards. Our first priority was to produce makeup prod-ucts that were made of minerals, meaning natural or closest to natural. We put forth products that are normally used profession-ally into unique packaging design created for personal use. In time, our customers got to know our products and we won their loyalty. What direction did your R&D projects take?

    We established a center where we could carry out our R&D projects in the framework of the Ege University Science & Technology Appli-cation & Research Center. With our expert R&D engineers, consultants and the support of TBTAK (Scientific & Technological Research Council of Turkey) we were able to discover the treatment of skin discoloration from the molecules obtained from an orange peel. Through this we successfully completed our project and were able to create a cream for production. With the active extracts we created in our own team we created our skin care cream range. In order to continue as a whole and have a better quality of production under international GMP standards, we built our factory in zmir. We now carry out all our production here.You produce makeup and skin care products. How are your products met abroad?Currently, our products under the Sheida brand can be found in over 50 markets world-

We will add new product series to our skin care group that are highly effective with natural active extracts. Alongside these aims in production, we will invest towards sales and marketing at our selling points domesti-cally and internationally.     (stanbul Chemicals & Chemical Prod-ucts Exporters Assocation) and AKMB (Aegean Chemicals & Chemical Products Exporters Assocation)?Our R&D Manager is Mr. Fatih KARA-BEY, an Msc PhD Candidate and through his idea and the support of TBTAK we were able to present our skin stain remover cream, Lightening Cream. With a 1.000.000,00 TL budget, TBTAK covered the costs of the 18 months out of the 3-year project. We pre-sented a product unique to us with the cos-metic use of the patent under our belts. With the active molecules weve developed on our own, we were able to present a product more effective than others.     My job doesnt leave much time for my hob-bies unfortunately. Even if it isnt a lot, Im interested in trekking and hiking. I love going on off-road trips with my family. I want to spend as much time as I can with them. Fam-ily comes first, always.Do you get the chance to enjoy this city? What are your favorite activities to do in Istanbul? stanbul truly is a beautiful city. I love meet-ing with friends for dinner along the Bospho-rus, it really helps you forget how tired one can be. What is your most important principle in business? I never make short-term plans. No matter what the market conditions are, I make sure not to compromise our standards. Rushing our work is not in our companys philosophy. What are the golden rules of the cos-metics sectors sales and marketing?

    Which rules do you remain faithful to?In the cosmetics sector, you can stay ahead by closely following the trends and can achieve success if you dont compromise its quality. You have to truly understand the customers and the markets needs. Each market has dif-ferent needs and expectations. If you dont foresee these expectations or needs, you wont be able to achieve success.How would you describe the word beauty?A woman's prior goal should always be 'health', beauty should be the outcome of health and care. Even if you wear the best, the most luxurious makeup, an unhealthy face can't hide itself. If you care about your beauty then you have to stay focused on your health, eat well, exercise and take care of yourself. Our priority in our products is to maintain health through care and to restore it. There-fore, beauty comes from within.
