Tetanus Vaccination

Did you know that less than 20% of horses in Australia

are vaccinated against tetanus and strangles each year?

If you are not part of this 20% your horse could be at risk

of deadly tetanus. Tetanus is caused by a bacterial spore which

lives in the soil and then enters the horse via wounds.

This means every horse is at risk of tetanus, regardless of

whether it is a top competition horse or confined to the back

paddock.

The Equine Infectious Disease Advisory Board recommends

that all horses should be vaccinated against Tetanus every

year to ensure that they are safe from this deadly disease.

Treatment of tetanus is very costly, and many horses

still die from the disease despite treatment.

Strangles Vaccination

Strangles is a disease that is highly contagious and can be

very serious. It is caused by a bacterium that spreads easily from

horse to horse by close contact or shared water troughs and tack.

Horses that contract strangles can get very sick; they may have

a snotty nose, a high temperature, badly swollen glands in the

neck and their breathing may be affected.

They can even get abscesses in other parts of their bodies.

Most horses will survive an infection of strangles,

but it is so contagious that it will almost certainly infect

a whole herd, and will cost a lot to treat your horses both

in time and money!

Worming

Worming your horse can be confusing with so many products

available! We all know how important worming is, but as a horse

owner we need to make sure we are using the most effective

product for our horses, our properties and ourselves.

For adult horses, the major worm group to consider are small

strongyles. These worms undergo a unique stage in their life-

cycle during which they bury themselves into the wall of the gut,

waiting for an opportune time to re-emerge. Major health issues

are can be caused when these encysted stages re-emerge en

masse. In 50 percent of cases this will be fatal.

Many horses can carry low burdens of small strongyles

without significant health impact but the problem is

identifying which horses have high burdens and which have low.

While this is still not an exact science, the best approximation

we can make is by measuring faecal egg counts.

Current thinking is for all horses to receive at least two

treatments per year with a broad spectrum product that will

kill the potentially fatal encysted stages and also capture other

potential nasties such as tapeworm and bots.
