The message I would like to share for this year’s season is one of determination…with the weather not always in our favor and snow not coming on our time frame. We made the best of our season with 24-hour snowmaking when temps allowed, wel-comed our amazing volunteers and staff whose hard work and dedication made the 2015/2016 season safe & positive experi-ence for all. Due to all of our supporters we were able to contin-ue our long-standing tradition of creating life long Ashwabay memories! Here are some highlights worth noting….

Over 160 volunteers gave their expertise to the hill and exem-plified Ashwabay’s mission, which is to provide year-round op-portunities and programs to people of all ages promoting enjoy-ment of the outdoors.

The Friends of Ashwabay committee that works solely on grants and fundraising was thrilled to receive the Bremer Grant. This grant will allow us to open a tubing hill with a new lift, re-place the bunny hill’s tired rope tow with a new paddle tow lift and lighting of the XC Telford loop. The team also submitted 10 grants this year for youth programming and education.

Hooray, the Bremer Grant match was received with an over-whelming response from the Chequamegon community and we were able to make our match!

The outside of the Chalet received shingles on the peaks thanks to Bob Sharp’s hard work & talent and generous donations from our Spring/Summer ask.

Much to the happiness of Nordic skiers the trails were used into April with our extended snow season.

Our scholarship program for families in need was able to serve 34 youth and families in areas of school groups, MADski pro-gram, season passes, Friday night tickets and rentals.

Friday Youth Night continued to draw in record numbers of teens this year. Thanks to our sponsors, the 1% grant from Bay-field Recreation Center and Chequamegon Bay Area Community Fund we were able to provide a safe, fun, and needed outlet for our youth.

Apostle Island Community Fund generously donated funds for us to provide outdoor opportunities such as newly purchased snowshoes and youth programming.

Thanks to the Chequamegon Bay Area Community Fund we have Jr. Ski Patrollers in their final stages of certification. Steve & Holly Pierce are finishing up the extensive Ski Patrol certifica-tion class for our Jr. Ski Patrol youth and potential ski hill patrol-lers.

Funds were donated by our Ski Patrol to the Ski Hill to secure a

used snowmobile for their patrolling of the hill.

Great news, the 2015 summer Food and Beverage had another strong year providing to the BTC patrons. Terry Meyer Matier from Big Top Chautauqua did it again with a fantastic entertain-ment line up.

Big Top Chautauqua and Ashwabay board members continue to meet for potential solutions to BTC’s need for growth with their future site plans. Ashwabay is committed to continuing our positive collaboration together. Once again, I would like to say thank you to all of our Donors, Pass-holders, Patrons, Staff, Volunteers and Board of Directors for all the gifts, work and expertise you have given to Ashwabay. I am truly thankful for all of your talents and willingness to share them. Each one of you is instrumental to the success of this Northwood’s treasure. We have such a unique opportunity with Ashwabay and its un-limited benefits for our community to provide a positive out-door experience for all. With all of this and more to come it is essential we continue to ask for your support financially and physically. Many thanks to those of you who carry the torch and I ask that you share our story to bring in needed support.

From the Treasurer

The giving and support during the 2015-16 season was unprece-dented! With the receipt of the Bremer Foundation grant and the outpouring of community support, over $107,000 was donated to AOEF. The developments over the next year at Ashwabay are go-ing to be exciting. The summer season of providing food and beverage for the Big Top Chautauqua guests contin-ues to grow thanks to better offerings, quicker service and Big Top’s excellent schedule. The year-after-year profits during the summer season resulted in the first time in known history that AOEF had to pay income tax. Despite being a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, the summer food and beverage service is recognized as a taxable business function. After playing catch-up last year with the condition of the equip-ment, most notably the alpine groomer, the expenses were below last year’s. Many expenses and challenges are ahead with the installation of the tubing hill and new begin-ner’s handle-tows, but with a great Executive Director and a supportive community the re-sult will be worthwhile.
