Presque Isle, a place in Wisconsin’s famed Northwoods, is a vast swath of forest and
glacial lake country that deserves to be named Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness. It is the
location of a quaint town in the famous lake country of Vilas County, offering 77 square
miles of pine and hardwood forests, lakes and streams; a four season vacation land
that only just begins to tell the story. It is immediately adjacent to Michigan’s sprawling
Ottawa National Forest and Wisconsin’s 200,000 plus acres of Northern Highland State
Forest - offering hundreds of lakes and countless miles of scenic Northwoods back
roads.
Lake Superior, the Porcupine Mountains, canoe country of the Sylvania Wilderness
Tract are a short drive away. Presque Isle is in the center of Wisconsin’s famed Lake-
land area. Arts and crafts shops, family fun theme attractions, historical museums and
wildlife exhibits are minutes away. Golfing, tennis and horseback riding facilities add
to your choices.
The top attraction, however, is the natural splendor of Northwoods forests and clear
pristine lakes that offer a world of relaxation for all, from the contemplative sports -
hiking, photography, canoeing, kayaking, bicycling - to the world of casual or serious
trophy fishing, boating and waterskiing. Our glacial hills and clear waters will make
you an enthusiastic “discoverer” of Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness. Wildlife abounds -
eagles, loons, songbirds to whitetail deer grazing along the roadsides. If you’re lucky,
you might see a black bear lumbering along.
Whatever your vacation dreams, make them a reality by coming home to Presque Isle.

Nearly 300 years ago, shipwrecked French
priests on the shores of Lake Superior
made their way down a river to an area
they christened “Presque Isle,” or “Almost
an Island,” because of the vast stretches
of lakes and rivers that dwarfed the land.
The advent of the logging era brought
development to the area in the early
1900’s. In 1905, Presque Isle was known
as Fosterville, after one J.J. Foster who
built and operated a large saw mill.
William S. Winegar bought the mill in
1910 and the fledgling community was
renamed “Winegar”.
When the mill closed in 1933, the great
“Lumber Baron” era came to an end.
Today the mill ponds are visible from the
village and provide a refuge for birds and
wildlife.
In l955, the village name was changed
once again. Reflecting the wisdom and
farsightedness of early French missionary
priests, we finally became...
“Presque isle” - almost an Island.
A visit to the Heritage Society Museum in
downtown Presque Isle will take you back
to these simpler times.

WINTeRs are wonderfully long in Presque Isle due to its proximity to Lake Superior and receiving
“lake effect” snow. Because of this, its snow-covered winters begin early and end late.
With Presque Isle at the hub of a major snowmobile system, a visitor can spend a week and ride a
different trail each day. The breathtaking beauty will leave you in awe as you travel the area’s
nearly 500 miles of groomed trails winding through rambling forests and over hilly country. These
trails frequently lead you to woodland rivers where the flowing water remains open throughout
most of the winter. Small bridges breach the snow-covered banks, lending access to other beautiful
portions of the Presque Isle vacationland. The local Sno-Bunnies Snowmobile Club does an excel-
lent job of keeping the trails groomed, marked and maintained with their 2007 Tucker Terra and
new Tractor with a Sorcy Track System. Snowmobile enthusiasts agree, Wisconsin’s Last Wilder-
ness provides endless riding opportunities with something to please every snowmobiler.
This is everywhere to be appreciated and
enjoyed every season of the year, and with
Presque Isle’s proximity to the Upper Penin-
sula of Michigan, the options to explore
nature’s beauty are endless. Enormous Lake
Superior, famed Porcupine Mountains Wilder-
ness State Park and many outstanding water-
falls are just a short drive away. To reach the
Black River Parkway Falls, go north on M-64 or
Hwy O to Hwy 2, then west to Bessemer. In
Bessemer, turn north on County 513. Follow
signs to Copper Peak and Black River Harbor.
After passing Copper Peak look for signs to
falls. Falls will be on the right. Two beautiful
falls near Watersmeet are Bond Falls and
Agate Falls. For Bond Falls, take Hwy 45 to the
town of Paulding. Go 2.5 miles east on Bond
Falls Road. Agate Falls can be reached by tak-
ing Hwy 45 from Watersmeet to Old 45 one
mile. Stop at Bluff Creek and walk creek on
south and west side.
Numerous other waterfalls are waiting to be
enjoyed, including nearly 90 in Porcupine
Mountains State Park. Please see the Chamber
for more information.

"Denim anD Dessert” ReadeRs TheaTReis a non-profit organization made up of community members. This dynamic group re-
hearses a couple of times for each play. The players are able to read and act their lines
as opposed to memorizing them.
This allows for involvement by
many and offers a fun hobby
rather than a consuming one.
The players put a lot of work and
time into set designs and produc-
tion. Recent productions have in-
cluded “You Can’t Take it With
You,” and “Klondike Kalamity”.
Each production is followed by
delicious desserts and beverages.
