R Y A N S P E N C EP O R T F O L I O 2 0 1 5
HE LLOI’m Ryan Spence, a Manchester-born graphic designer based in Leeds.
With skills in print design, branding, illustration, photography and animation, I’m a stickler for detail, ensuring the work I produce is always consistent of a high technical standard.
After graduating in 2013, I have worked as a graphic designer for Magpie, a creative agency in Leeds. From the off, I implemented new procedures in artworking and presented masterclasses along the way. Within two years, I have grown towards the job responsibilities of a lead designer; inducting designers, leading on concept work in major creative projects and setting a high, consistent standard for others to follow.
Outside of design I’m a bit of a collector - my shelves are decorated with an array of vinyl records to vinyl figures, I’m also an entry-level photographer, an occasional doodler, and a full-blown Minecraft enthusiast.
ARTISTIC FL AIRI worked with Artistic Flair, a UK-based company in the arts and crafts sector, as part of a rebranding and packaging project. Working on a brief to create a market-leading identity in a market which had seen its fair share of clumsy, DIY brands, we worked towards a concept which achieved a sense of tradition and heritage. The subtle textured elements in the wordmark help to add craftsmanship - keeping the roots firmly within the arts market.

ARTISTIC FL AIRRolled out onto packaging, the brand consists of muted colours, handmade illustrations, and stressed textures. The design is adaptable whilst recognisable, and emphasises on a home-grown persona combined with playful, informal language.

MINIM ALIST FOOTBALL KITSAs a side project, I took to creating my favourite retro football kits into a minimalist vector format. These graphics were then displayed over social media, and are available as posters upon request.

PORTRAITISTWorking alongside the excellent photographer Rory Lewis, I designed and artworked a lookbook to celebrate his extensive portfolio. Together, we selected the images that showcase Rory’s talents and, after much decision making, created a running order. I used a full-bleed layout to maximize the effect of Rory’s photography, a solution to featuring as much imagery as possible. Certain images required background manipulation to function as a full-bleed page.

LOCKS & L ADYI created the brand identity and packaging for a start-up business, Locks & Lady. Working closely with the client, I achieved a clean, feminine brand which incorporated a numbering system to help identify ranges of beauty products. I used a combination of serif and sans-serif typefaces to create a modern brand which gave the impression of being a product with experience and pedigree.

LEEDS CIT Y COUNCIL / UNIVERSIT Y OF LEEDSDuring the span of ten months, I worked with both Leeds City Council and the University of Leeds to achieve a Walk-It map highlighting the rich history of medicine research within Leeds city centre. The map is currently available to pick-up from shop & museum windows dotted around Leeds, noticeably in Waterstones and the Leeds Town Hall.

OUTRE ACH INTERNATIONALOutreach International is an overseas volunteering company which works with a vast range of people who are interested in volunteering work and charity work. I worked with Outreach to create a new, refreshed brand identity reflective of the graft and hard-work involved with volunteering, which roots right through the design. The brief was to ensure Outreach are seen as a professional outfit as well as characteristic and human too.

OUTRE ACH INTERNATIONALI worked with Outreach and a web development team to update their existing website which, as of September 2015, is still under development. With a wide variety of pages, options, and experiences, the web design has been one of my largest and most extensive projects to date.

UNIVERSIT Y OF LEEDSI worked with the University of Leeds to launch a campaign aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students. The campaign was successful in encouraging a greater number of alumni to share their views in the National Student Survey and Programme Surveys. This campaign was featured across the University campus through posters, plasma screens and billboards.

NATURAL HRHaving used Natural HR on a regular basis in a creative agency, I was delighted when I was asked to create an infographic for Natural HR to demonstrate the benefits of using their cloud HR software. To explain the simplicity of NaturalHR, I created a complex illustration displaying a variety of processes and directions contrasted against a simple, effective illustration - this visual metaphor was warmly greeted by the Natural HR team, and is currently live on their website (as of September 2015).
