In fact, as something of a bonus, the production was actually a three-day event. This year Planes of Fame Air Museum produced their first-ever “Twilight Show” as well. Starting with “Golden Age of Aviation” flybys, the Twilight Show then progressed to a very dynamic simulated jet age air combat routine featuring a North American F-86 Sabre and a MiG-15 from the Planes of Fame collection. Greg Colyer then took to the sky for an aerobatic display with his “Ace Maker II” Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star. Following Colyer was Major John Cummings in the USAF Demonstration Team’s F-22 Raptor. Dennis Sanders performed an aerial demonstration in a Sanders Aeronautics Hawker Sea Fury, followed by Captain Denis “Cheech” Beaulieu in the Canadian Armed Forces CF-18 Demonstration team Hornet. “Cheech” actually waited until the time of official sunset before taking off to light up the sky over Chino with the Hornet’s afterburners during his aerobatic routine and then bringing the Twilight show to a conclusion by dragging the Hornet’s tailhook along the Chino runway with an impressive shower of sparks on landing in the dark. On Saturday the opening ceremony and national anthem included a missing man formation consisting of a Republic / Curtiss P-47G Thunderbolt, Lockheed P-38J Lightning, Seversky 2PA/AT-12A Guardsman and Curtiss P-36C Hawk, followed by a quartet of North American P-51 Mustangs, including a P-51A, a P-51C and Two P-51Ds. After the initial break, all eight fighter planes performed a “razzle dazzle” series of flybys that kept the audience’s heads swiveling in all directions. The U.S. Army Air Corps / European Theater flyby included a variety of U.S. warbirds, as well as an Allison-powered full-scale Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IX replica, mixing it up with a Focke Wulf Fw 190A-8, a Messerschmitt Bf 108D1 and a Pilatus P-2. Rob Harrison brought the morning session to a conclusion with his popular “Tumbling Bear” routine in a Zlin 142. Veterans from the nation’s past wars were interviewed over the public address system each day. The afternoon began with Sean D. Tucker’s amazing aerobatic display in the Oracle Challenger II Biplane, followed by a Korean Air War routine including piston-engine warbirds as well as a North American F-86F Sabre, a MiG-15 and two Lockheed T-33 Shooting Stars. After the Korean Air War scenario, Stewart Dawson performed an aerobatic demonstration in a F7F-3 Tigercat, followed by Clay Lacy’s Learjet Aerobatics display. A U.S. Navy/Pacific Theater routine then pitted a variety of U.S. Navy warbirds and a British Hawker Sea Fury against the Planes of Fame “Tora! Tora! Tora!” movie Aichi D3A Val dive bomber replica and a Mitsubishi A6M3 Zero fighter from the Southern California Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. The Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 Hornet then took to the sky for its daytime display, followed by Dennis Sanders in the Sanders Aeronautics Hawker Sea Fury T. Mk. 20 and John Collver’s aerobatic display in his “War Dog” North American SNJ-5 Texan. The weekend shows were brought to a close with Major John Cummings flying the F-22 Raptor demo and the Heritage Flight display in which the Raptor was joined at the end by the Planes of Fame Air Museum’s Lockheed P-38J Lightning, North American P-51D Mustang and North American F-86F Sabre. Kevin Eldridge, Steve Hinton and Major General Tommy Williams (USAFR) flew the Planes of Fame aircraft. 2015 PLANES OF FAME AIRSHOW ‘A SALUTE TO VETERANS’

The Planes of Fame Airshow over the weekend of May 2-3, 2015 was an outstanding success.

Challenger II Biplane, followed by a Korean Air War routine including piston-engine warbirds as well as a North American F-86F Sabre, a MiG-15 and two Lockheed T-33 Shooting Stars.

IT’S A KIND OF MAGIC

Millions of people have experienced flight in airliners. Many have flown in other types of civilian aircraft. Some people have been fortunate enough to experience an orientation flight in high performance aircraft such as warbirds. A rare few get to experience “the magic” of warbirds in close formation flight. I am

fortunate enough to fly as the videographer for the Planes of Fame Air Museum. The world becomes a different place when we are in a formation flight in warbirds. The magic begins as the warbirds start to gather up in a close formation in the sky. An invisible sub-conscious bond forms between the pilots as we begin to act as one in the sky. We change from individuals to one consciousness. The world ceases to exist beyond the formation and the panoramic view to the horizon. There is an unspoken trust, an understanding and a faith that all those in the formation place in each other while in formation. Once the formation is in place and we are in flight as one, the magic peaks as the rhythm of movement and the singularity of purpose has now spread across space and time among all those in the formation. Each pilot is focused on their position in relation to the next aircraft in formation. This forms a chorus of movement and a rhythm across the formation. We are one together, a mile high, between heaven and earth. We are united in our quest, and alone above the earth. For each of us, there is nowhere we would rather be. Even though I am 60 years old, each time we fly the memories of my childhood rise to the conscious level of my thoughts. I remember dreaming about being one of those guys flying in warbirds. A part of me is the man doing a professional job, and a part of me is a child living out his dreams. I grew up having a dream and now I fly with the premiere warbird museum in the world in some of the rarest warbird formations ever flown. I have always had a “love” for the magic that is man’s mastery of the skies. I feel the magic in the rhythm and balance, the power and grace, of warbird’s in close formation flight. When we are in formation in the sky it is a very “in the moment” experience. The world fades away and there is just us, “We few, we band of brothers”. We are totally awesome. About the same time I have the self-realization of how awesome we are, a big drop of oil from the engine slides across the outside of the canopy right in front of the camera lens. The awesomeness of the moment is ruined by a single drop of oil that I am powerless to do anything about. God has a way of giving us a perspective to see how awesome we can be…and an oil streak on the canopy to remind us we’re not all that.

Held on the first Saturday of each month the ‘Living History Flying Day’ events are educational and inspirational. The topic for the June 6 event was ‘Dive Bombers’, featuring the Douglas SBD Dauntless. We were fortunate to have 4 veterans, all 90 yrs old or older present. Staff Sergeant Sidney H. Zimman, USMC, Harlan W. Foote, Commander USN (Ret.), Robert W. J. Cocks, Commander USN (Ret.) and Roderick McChesney USN gave us first hand accounts of their experiences in the Douglas Dauntless during WWII and author Thomas Cleaver presented an overview of the aircraft. The

presentation was followed by a question & answer period and flight demonstration

of the Douglas SBD Dauntless. After the flight demonstration the guests were

invited to the Planes of Fame Theater to watch “The Battle of Midway”(1942)

an Academy Award® winning documentary filmed by John Ford and Navy Combat Cameramen during the epic three-day naval battle (June 3-6, 1942) between the United States and the Imperial Japanese. Over 400 guests were in attendance to enjoy the Veteran’s presentations, flight demonstration and movie. ‘TWO GUYS GRILLING’ was on hand BBQ-ing hamburgers and hot dogs and kids were making candy

airplanes in the Aviation Discovery center. A great time was had by all.

PLEASE JOIN US: KILROy COFFEE KLATCH

On Tuesday July 7th, the inaugural Kilroy Coffee Klatch will be held in the Maloney hangar at Planes of Fame Air Museum from 9-10 am. We invite all veterans to join us, meet other veterans from the area, and share whatever is on your mind. Museum admission is waived for attending veterans and their guests. Planes of Fame Executive Director Jerry Wilkins will host, and complimentary refreshments will be served. Future meetings will be held at the same time the first Tuesday of each month. We are honored to serve as a venue for our veterans, and we hope this monthly meeting will provide an enjoyable and meaningful exchange of ideas.
