Chaplain’s Corner My Brothers, as you may have seen on the cover, this month is Breast Cancer Awareness month. We all know someone who has been affected by this dreaded disease, so I would like us all to say a special prayer for those who have passed and those who are fighting this awful illness. Hopefully this thing will be gone soon and eve-ryone will be healthy and happy. W. Ed Davison is still in Rehab and still needing prayers and of all things to happen, his wife was in a car accident and broke her knee cap! She was at LRMC when this is being written but is hoping to go to the same rehab facility that Ed is in so they can be together. Please keep them both in your prayers and thoughts. It is my sad duty to inform the Craft of the passing of Brother George Shoemaker

on Tuesday evening Sept. 15th. George was a long time supporter of Leesburg Lodge and the dinners on Sunday and his humor and good feelings will be sadly missed. His service will be Oct 6th at 9:30 AM at the Plantation Memory Garden.

LIGHT FROM THE EAST

W∴M∴ Ron Glover

Once again this month's article is starting off with sad news. I am sorry to inform those that were not already aware that Brother George Shoemaker passed away. Once his family gives us a date we will be holding a Masonic Memorial Service for him. For those that knew George, you know the quality of person that we lost. He will truly be missed. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. I discussed the poor attendance we've been having at our Breakfast and Dinners last month and I am so pleased with the attendance we've had in September. Brothers, your coming and supporting the Lodge with your presence at these fund raisers mean so much to us and I'm truly thankful for those that came. If you haven't come to one this year you've been missing out on some truly fantastic meals created by our JW Wayne Reynolds. The officers of Leesburg Lodge made our trip to the Masonic Home in St. Petersburg on the 20 th. It is always an eye open-ing experience to see the day to day operations of the home and the quality of the facilities that are provided. It is also good to attend the Board Meeting they hold there the Sunday after every third Saturday, (yes you read that right), to get a good idea of where our donations and monies go in providing the resources and budget for the home. I thank the officers and their ladies that came. This year is still flying by and I would like to take a moment to let you Brothers know of a few upcoming dates. Our FC Jayson Wood will be raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on October 12th at Clermont Lodge. This is going to be another joint effort between Clermont, Mt. Dora, and Leesburg and we have a total of four Brothers being raised. Please come and support our new Brothers. On Sunday November 1st we will be having our Annual Master's BBQ at Leesburg Lodge. Expect to get your tickets in the mail soon. It is a little later this year because we are hoping more of our traveling Brothers will be able to come, and it was also the earliest we could make it without it conflicting with any other events. On our first stated communication in November, Tuesday the 3rd, Brother Juan Sepulveda will be coming to Leesburg Lodge to give a speech. For those that do not know, Brother Juan hosts The Winding Stairs Podcast and is known for his hand-painted Aprons and Masonic Art as well as his love for The Craft and our Brotherhood. His website is http://www.thewindingstairs.com/. I encourage any Brother to visit his site and come meet him in November. Also in November, Brother Jay Kosnar of Groveland Lodge is planning on presenting the Master Mason 1,2,3 classes again, this time at Leesburg Lodge. The Villages Masonic Lodge #394 has invited all Brethren to The Order Of The Rusty Nail Degree at Masonic Wildwood Lodge building. A Lasagna dinner will be served at 5:00 pm and the Rusty Nail Degree will begin at 6:00 pm. The Order of the Rusty Nail is a short program for use in a tyled Lodge of Master Masons. It is designed to refresh the memories of Brothers holding a valid dues card who are not regular attendees of Lodge and will cover topics such as the steps, passwords, signs of the three Degrees of Freemasonry, touch on Lodge Customs, while reviewing the mysteries and legends of Freemasonry as taught in the ritual, all de-signed to encourage regular attendance. All Master Masons residing in the area, visiting or permanent, are invited to attend. For further information, or to make a dinner res-ervation, contact Lou Hook at: 352-750-4799, Degree Coordinator, or Jim Farrow, Worshipful Master at: 352-209-4101. I would also like to remind everybody that the “Grand” 18th Masonic District will be putting on the annual Outdoor Degree on Saturday December 5th at Draper's Farm. There will be a maximum of two Brothers going through due to the Grand Master hav-ing an official visit that evening. There will be a pancake breakfast starting at 7:00 am with the degree to start at 9:00 am. RW Ed Mayfield is also looking for any Brothers that can assist in parts. If you can help please give him a call. Also, if you come, remember to bring a chair. Please come to any and all of these events. I look forward to seeing you.

From the West

Bro. Jeff Lamb

With hundreds of organizations in which men can join, what makes Freemasonry differ-ent? I believe it comes down to one simple word, Brotherhood. When you become a mem-ber of our honorable Fraternity, you are not just another dues paying member, another number to add to the rank, but a brother among broth-ers. A relationship with other like minded men, who are willing to accept you into the Masonic family.

This is not so true in other organizations, and is one of the main points that separate us from the rest. But are we truly living up to this, or just paying lip service. It sounds good when we say it, but are we really living it. Have you visited a brother lately that might be in the hos-pital, or given a call to one you haven't seen in a while? Have you offered to give a brother a ride to lodge that might not be getting around as well as he use to, or even just went out of your way to shake a brothers hand when you see him in lodge.

When we hear someone say “hey broth-er, how are you doing” remember what the word brother means, and treat that man as if he is family. Make a call this month or a visit to a brother, go out of the way to ask a brother how he is doing, This is an important part of our ob-ligation and should not be overlooked, Because without it, we are just like all the other organi-zation out there. So when you make the extra effort, do it because it is what we are supposed to do, and it will make a difference in not only the way he will feel, but you'll feel better your-self.

From the Secretary

WHank DeBerry

Brothers, I am going to make this as short and sweet as possible this month. Here it is in a nut shell. We have received the dues notices and cards from Grand Lodge and they will be going out on Monday October 5th. I know this because W. Larry Duff and I will be working on them and getting the envelopes stuffed and stamped and addressed the day before. It then becomes up to you as members of Leesburg Lodge No.58 to pay your dues on or before the 27th of December, just like the Florida Digest of Masonic Law and our own By-laws state. This is the only time I will be bringing this subject up because of the next item I will be explaining. Brothers, due to my advancing years and our love and affection for our grandchildren, Paula and I have decided to sell our house in The Villages and move down to Winter Springs to be closer to them and be able to participate in more of their activities with them. It has been my great honor to serve Leesburg Lodge and the Brothers here as your Sec-retary and as I hope your friend. I know that Paula and I will miss all of our Brothers and Sisters of the Lodge and the Eastern Star and we plan to come back often as we can to sit in Lodge or Chapter with you. Now Brothers, the ball is going to be in your court. You will need to find a replacement for my position. It is not an easy position but it also is not impossible to do (Hey I did it!) The Brother taking this job will be in charge of the Trestle Board, the Breakfast and Sunday dinner money collection, sending out correspondence to Grand Lodge and other items that I will be happy to sit down and teach you how to do. As you know I was at the Lodge on Tuesday and Friday during the week, however if the Brother is still employed that would not be possible. I am sure something can be worked out. This will take someone who is committed to doing the job and doing it correctly. The ladies at Grand Lodge will be your saviors when it comes to knowledge and MW Richard Lynn has been more than kind when answering my “dumb” questions that I should have known the answer to. Don’t forget you have to fill out a nomination form and have it back to the cur-rent Secretary (Me) before the sound of the gavel on December 1st! Anything turned in after will go in the round file by order of the Grand Master. If you are running towards the desk when that gavel sounds you are too late! Brothers these are not my rules! I will be happy to provide the copy of the Executive Order signed by the Grand Master so you can read it yourself. Brothers it has been fun and a real pleasure but you have me only until the January Installation.

When a man is initiated as a Master Mason, the new Brother is presented with a

white lambskin apron, which he usually keeps at home in a special box or a dresser draw-er. In all ages, the color white has been associated with purity and the lamb with inno-

cence. This symbolism is universal, and the Christian Mason notes that the Bible speaks of a person’s sins as being “washed white as snow” and refers to the Master of Nazareth as the “Lamb of God.” In Masonic Lodges today, Masons who are not officers wear undecorat-

ed aprons of white cloth or white lambskin. It is suggested that a Brother’s Masonic apron, should be buried with him or burned, if the service is a cremation. His name is on it, so it would be of no use to anyone

else, except, perhaps, to a family member who is a Mason. Alternatively, you may wish to give his apron to his Lodge, where his Brothers will archive it in honor of your husband’s

longtime service to Freemasonry.

"When the summons comes to join the innumerable caravan that moves to that mysterious realm where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death," will you have made the preparations necessary to sat-isfy the laws of the land and to ease the burden of your passing on your family? It is something we should all consider in a timely manner, especially while we are of sound mind and body and can make clear decisions regarding our possessions and last wishes. Approaching this task from the standpoint of membership in the Fraternity, we must deal with the long-standing tradition not to discuss, in detail, the business and customs of the Fraternity with family members. Because of this outdated custom, many widows and children have no idea who in the Lodge needs to be noti-fied of our passing. Here are a few suggestions that will ease the burden on your family and, at the same time, ease the burden on the Lodge Secretary and its Master. Include with your important papers, envelopes addressed to the Lodge Secretary and the Secretaries of all the Appendant Bodies in which you have membership. Put a sheet of paper in each envelope with your Ma-sonic history. If you have been a member of more than one Lodge, be sure your list reflects the correct names and locations of all Lodges in which you have held membership in case you have transferred your member-ship. Include a place for your survivor to write the date of your passing and other such information that might be of interest to the Lodges and/or Appendant Bodies. Attach to the envelopes a sheet of paper with detailed instructions that explain to your next of kin the importance of notifying each Masonic Body of your passing. If you are uncertain what the correct address is, look at the return address on your latest dues notice. Also, include with these important papers a sheet of paper with instructions on whom to contact to request a Masonic memorial service. The Master of your Lodge is always the appropriate person to contact when re-questing a service. It would be a good idea to write out a draft of your obituary so that others will know those things that was important to you in your lifetime. This also insures your Masonic memberships, titles, and honors are presented and spelled accurately. Be sure to include the full name of each Masonic Body as well as the complete title of each office you have held. Also, include specific instructions on disposal of your Masonic ritual books, pins, aprons, and related items. If you have been a collector of Masonic books, pamphlets and other such items, be sure to suggest proper disposition of these articles. This may be to a Masonic relative who is interested, the Lodge for their library, or a Brother you know who will keep and treasure your books as you did. Alternatively, you may want to donate your books to the Lodge with instructions to sell them and use the money earned for upkeep of the Lodge or for a Lodge charity. Whatever your personal wishes, just make timely plans and leave clear instruc-tions. Nothing is sadder than going to a flea market or yard sale and seeing someone's Masonic jewels or book collection lying in a neglected heap on a dusty table. Now for a look at the worldly side of the issue of death. As in disposition of your Masonic belongings, it should be a priority with every Brother to make final plans. You should contact a funeral director and ask him or her for assistance in preplanning your funeral and burial. Your funeral director can assist you in devel-oping a pre-need plan. This plan can be purchased and paid for at any time. The funeral director will help to

“The Masonic Apron”

Page 12: 2015 Oct TB.pdf

12

select your casket, service, vault, grave plot, grave marker, and make suggestions on the type of service and what could be included in the service such as visitation arrangements, choice of minister and casket bearers, songs, and Masonic emblem(s) on the service folder. The funeral director should be instructed to remind the family that it is customary that the Masonic apron remains in the casket. The funeral director will counsel you on the financial aspects of your service and will help you to select items and services within your financial range. He will suggest options for paying for your pre-need arrangements. This can include CDs, insurance policies, etc. An advantage of pre-paying is that the cost can be frozen to protect against inflation and save your family any increased cost when the service is needed. The funeral director can provide you with a book that guides you in providing the information needed. You should fill this book out carefully and completely. Be sure to include a copy of your obituary and a copy of the list of Masonic Bodies you belong to, as suggested above. If you are a veteran, please be sure to include pertinent information related to your service record. This would include branch of service, rank held, medals awarded, date of entry, date of exit, service serial number, and a copy of your discharge papers. Of course, you should visit your attorney and have him draw up a last will and testament. This will insure you your wishes are legal and binding and will leave no doubt as to what your wishes are for the disposition of your property. Such legal papers lift a big burden from the shoulders of your survivors during a very traumat-ic time. Take these steps now. As the Masonic memorial service says, we do not know when that time will come. Be

prepared and be considerate of your loved ones and your Brothers. Most of all, be prepared yourself, first in

your heart and second in your affairs.

Pictures from around the Lodge

Recently, at a Masters & Wardens meeting, I asked the District Deputy Grand Master, RW Alan Heist, if he would mind getting wet for a good cause. Well it turns out he has a bum back and couldn’t do it but he decided to turn the tables on me and “volunteer” me to take his place. Now there just happened to be a Past Grand Master at the meeting that night, and he spoke up and said “ I have $20 if you take pic-tures!” So the Ice Bucket plunge for me was started. Brothers, I have never seen money fly to the table like that night! I am very proud to say that we raised $600 dollars for the Grand Masters Masonic Youth Program and the Florida Sheriff’s Boys Ranch. The Challenge took place at Mt Dora Lodge on the evening of September 14, 2015 right before a meeting of Rainbow Assembly No. 79. The girls all had a laugh, I got wet (and cold) and Most Worshipful Aladro here are the pictures! Many thanks to Mt Dora Lodge for allowing these shenanigans at Donnelly House and to the Brothers who poured oh so slowly over my slightly frozen bald head. To the Rainbow girls and their leaders for their support and being there every time a Lodge has asked them, this was for you ladies!
