A SECOND STRAIGHT IS A FIRST FOR NORTHWESTERN STATE Northwestern State will make its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, but Fridays matchup with No. 2 seed Baylor marks the first time the Lady Demons have earned consecutive invitations to the Big Dance. The 2013-14 and 2014-15 Northwestern State womens basketball teams become the third NSU program to earn back-to-back NCAA postseason appearances, joining the NSU football and softball teams. In each of its last two NCAA Tournament appearances, the Lady Demons have faced a No. 1 seed -- Tennessee last season and Duke in 2004. This season marks the first time Northwestern State has earned anything other than a 16 seed in the NCAAs. Northwestern States postseason history is not limited to the NCAA Tournament, as the Lady Demons have earned four trips to the WNIT. In three of those events, Northwestern State posted 2-1 records.

TWO FOR TWO TIMES TWO Four current Northwestern State players are now 2-for-2 in reaching the NCAA Tournament. Seniors Chelsea Rogers and Presley Owens were junior-college transfers who arrived in Natchitoches for the 2013-14 season alongside freshmen Beatrice Attura and Amy Staha. In their NSU careers, the quartet has enjoyed a 7-1 mark in postseason play and captured two Southland Conference Tournament championships.

POD PROVIDES DEEP TIES FOR NSU Aside from all being placed in the NCAAs Oklahoma City Regional and the Waco, Texas, pod, what do Baylor, Arkansas and Northwestern share in common with Northwestern State? Plenty, actually. The ties between Baylor and Northwestern State run deep. In the 2014-15 academic and athletic year, Northwestern States football and baseball teams have played games at Baylor. The Lady Bears softball team participated in the Natchi-toches Historic District Development Commission Lady Demon Softball Classic in February. A season ago, both the Lady Demons and Demons basketball teams played at the Ferrell Center, and the Northwest-ern State softball team played its NCAA Regional in Waco. The ties extend to personnel as well. NSU co-head coach Brooke (Lassiter) Stoehr played for Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey when Mulkey was an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech, and both Stoehr and Mulkey are former Lady Techsters point guards. Mulkey and former Baylor and Louisiana Tech head coach Sonja Hogg, who still works at Baylor, are mem-bers of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, which is located in Natchitoches, less than 2 miles from the NSU campus. The $23 million museum housing the hall opened in June 2013. Waco, meanwhile, is home to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, located a stones throw from the Baylor athletic facilities cluster. Baylor head softball coach Glenn Moore is a former Northwestern State tight end, former graduate assistant and as-sistant softball coach. Moores wife, the former Janice Miller, is a former Southland Conference high jump champion and school record holder at Northwestern State. Current Northwestern State assistant softball coach Kathy Shelton is a former Baylor softball player who was named the 2013 Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Former Baylor quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin IIIs sister, DeJon Griffin, is an NSU graduate who held the school hammer throw record. In Arkansas, the Lady Demons have a podmate who they faced earlier this season. The Lady Demons and Razorbacks met in Fayetteville on Nov. 23 with Arkansas coming away with a 78-30 victory. Additionally, Lady Demons co-head coach Brooke Stoehr was heavily recruited by then-Arkansas coach and current Texas A&M coach Gary Blair when Stoehr was a Parade All-American at Hamburg (Ark.) High School. Stoehr remains a devoted Arkansas football fan and has taught her and husband and co-head coach Scott Stoehrs 2-year-old son, Cooper, to call the Hogs. Finally there is No. 7 seed Northwestern. The similarities between NSU and NU begin with the respective universities first name and continued to their shared school colors of purple and white. Northwestern State and Northwestern have met twice in mens basketball, as the Demons traveled to Evanston, Ill., to face the Wildcats in 2003-04 and 2006-07.

LAST TIME IN THE TOURNAMENT Northwestern State walked into historic Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn., as a 16 seed facing one of wom-ens college basketballs standard bearers last March. Instead of being awed by the stage, NSU went toe-to-toe with the Lady Vols, entering halftime down by two, 22-20. A JanellePerez jumper at the 18:43 mark of the second half tied the game at 22. The Lady Demons continued to hang around, trailing by just 12 with 9:54 to play after a Beatrice Attura 3-pointer before Tennessee and its nine Parade All-Americans pulled away for a 70-46 victory.

CHASING RECORDS1K FOR J Janelle Perez and Keisha Lee have been mainstays in the NSU backcourt since Brooke and Scott Stoehr took over the program. Perez has started all 97 games the Lady Demons have played since she arrived in Natchitoches. Lee, who redshirted the 2011-12 season, has started 90 of NSUs last 97 games. In addition to being part of the first Lady Demons teams to reach consecutive NCAA Tournaments, Perez and Lee each surpassed the 1,000-point milestone in their careers this season. Lee did so Jan. 21 against Nicholls, connecting on a baseline jumper at the 18:30 mark of the second half. The basket was part of a 16-point second half for Lee, who helped NSU capture a 74-71 victory. Perez milestone moment came Feb. 14 against McNeese State when she hit a 3-pointer in overtime against the Cowgirls. Together, Lee and Perez became the first group of Northwestern State teammates to reach the 1,000 points in the same season since Annie Harris and Sandy Pugh did so in 1986-87. A year earlier, Teressa Thomas and Lonnie Banks both crossed the 1,000-point threshold.

AS 3S FALL, PEREZ AND ROGERS RISE In less than two full seasons, Chelsea Rogers has left a long-range mark on the Lady Demons record book. Rogers hit 59 3-pointers a sea-son ago, ranking 9th all time in school single-season history. Entering her second NCAA Tournament, Rogers has hit 58 3-pointers, which ranks 11th all-time. Sharing ninth place with Rogers is Janelle Perez, who has con-nected on a career-high 59 3-pointers in her junior season.

HALF A HUNDRED FOR STOEHRS Northwestern States Southland Conference Tournament quarter-final victory gave co-head coaches Brooke and Scott Stoehr a mini-milestone. The 84-67 victory against Nicholls was the 50th of the Stoeh-rs three-year NSU career, which began with them inheriting a six-win Lady Demons team prior to the 2012-13 season.

LADY DEMONS ENDURE SWINGS Northwestern State has produced a pair of 80-plus-point games this season, but it also has scored in the 30s twice. In many ways, the same can be said for its season. NSU opened the season with consecutive wins, including a 12-point win against Louisiana Tech, and was 4-1 after 71-43 win against Central Baptist College. In that game, the Lady Demons lost TaSheena Moore, a junior college All-American who was averaging 8.5 points and 6 rebounds per game, to a season-ending knee injury. After dropping five of its next six games, NSU rebounded with a 7-1 start to conference play that coincided with the insertion of Tia Youngblood into the starting lineup and Arianne Ausmers return to the rotation. A 63-46 loss to Central Arkansas on Jan. 28 began a skid of seven losses in 10 games to end the regular season and knocked NSU, which led the conference at the halfway point, to the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament. All the Lady Demons did when reaching Katy, Texas, and the Merrell Center was become the first SLC team to win four games in four days, defeating Central Arkansas (63-49), Nicholls (84-67), Lamar (70-64, OT) and Houston Baptist (58-50) to nab the Southlands automatic NCAA Tournament bid and extend their winning streak in Katy, Texas, to seven.

BRIGHT LIGHTS BRING OUT BEST IN BEA As a freshman, Beatrice Attura did some of her best scoring work against nationally prominent programs -- a trend that began with a trip to then-No. 9 Baylor. Attura set her season high that night against the Lady Bears, connecting for 13 points against the No. 9 team in the nation. In her first NCAA Tournament game, Attura came off the bench to score 11 points at Tennessee last March. The trend continued in December when Attura scored 12 points in a loss at then-No. 3 Texas, meaning the first three double-figure scoring efforts of her career came against Power five conference opponents. Attura enters todays game on the best offensive run of her career, having scored in double figures in seven of eight games, including a career-high 26 points in an overtime victory against Lamar in the semifinals of the Southland Confer-ence Tournament. Attura averaged 16.5 points per game in the tournament, earning Most Valuable Player honors.

PEREZ, LEE HONORED BY SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE Northwestern States junior backcourt tandem of JanellePerez and Keisha Lee were preseason second-team All-Southland Conference selections. After 29 regular-season games, Perez and Lee were honored with postseason all-conference acclaim as well. Lee was named honorable mention, while Perez remarkable conference season earned her first-team honors. In conference play, Perez led the Southland in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9) and finished second in the league in scoring (19.2 points per game) and 3-point shooting (44.1 percent), fourth in free-throw shooting (84.8 percent), fifth in made 3-pointers per game (2.3), sixth in steals per game (2.2), seventh in minutes played per game (34.8) and eighth in assists per game (3.6). Perez also connected on 46.1 percent of her shots in conference games, ranking her 13th and making her the shortest player (5-foor-2) among the top 15 shooters in the conference.

TRAILBLAZING NSU TO HONOR PIONEERING WOMENS ATHLETES Northwestern State athletics slogan is Great Tradition ... Brighter Future, but the NSU athletic department has a his-tory worth celebrating as well. On April 16, 1975, Northwestern State became the first university in Louisiana to award athletic scholarships to female athletes. The university will celebrate the 40th anniversary of that watershed moment next month when it honors Diane Pittman, Pat Nolen, Emma Ellerman, Do Bonin, Sherrell Landry and Emma Boozman and their pioneering accomplish-ments. Interestingly, Nolen -- now Pat Pierson -- became the second head coach in Northwestern State womens basketball intercollegiate history and produced a 166-88 record in nine seasons. Under Piersons direction, the Lady Demons earned the first Division I postseason berth in school history, reaching the 1986 NWIT where they defeated Tennessee Tech (77-71) and Duke (89-88) before falling to Idaho (100-91).

VALUING THE BASKETBALL PRODUCES VICTORIES One of the core beliefs of Brooke and Scott Stoehr is to value the basketball, or in other words, dont commit turn-overs. Northwestern State took that command to heart this year, committing just 13.1 turnovers per game, a mark that leads the Southland Conference and ranked 26th overall. The Lady Demons kept their turnover numbers in single digits seven times and committed 10 turnovers in three other games. NSUs record in games where it turns the ball over 10 times or less is 7-3.

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT Northwestern State enters todays game against No. 2 seed Baylor as an underdog, which is fine with the Lady Demons. It is a label they have worn well the past few seasons and a fact of life for many mid-major programs. There also is physical evidence to support that thought. Northwestern State features just three players -- Meghan Cross, Presley Owens and Ndey Sonko -- who stand 6-feet or taller. Consequently, the Lady Demons have the shortest roster of any of the 2015 NCAA Tournament teams, averaging 68 inches (5-foot-8) per player. The next shortest team in the field is Alabama State, which averages 69.11 inches per player, a shade taller than 5-9.

  • NSU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS The Lady Demons hold four top-100 rankings nationally entering the NCAA Tournament. NSU ranks 26th in fewest turnovers per game (13.1), 62nd in both turnover margin (plus-2.97) and fewest personal fouls per game (15.7). The Lady Demons are the 82nd best free-throw shooting team in the nation, connecting on 71.9 percent of their attempts. Individually, two Lady Demons are ranked nationally. First-team All-Southland Conference selection Janelle Perez ranks 35th in free-throw shooting (84.9 percent), 127th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.57), 161st in points per game (15.2), 184th in assists per game (3.5) and 211th in 3-pointers per game (1.79). Perez also is the 26th most accurate ac-tive free-throw shooter, hitting 81.2 percent of her attempts. Perez ranks 46th among active career scorers (1,154 points), while Keisha Lee is 52nd in that category (1,144). Chelsea Rogers ranks 220th nationally in 3-pointers per game, connecting on 1.76 per contest.

TWO NOTEWORTHY STATISTICAL CHAMPIONS CAN BE FOUND IN THE NCAA RECORD BOOK Northwestern State boasts two NCAA statistical champions, Cooda Dobin and Pam Hudson. Hudson is the only player under six feet to ever lead the nation in rebounding average. She averaged 15.1 boards per game in 1990, and had 438 rebounds in 29 games. Cooda Dobin lead the nation in assists three straight years, and is the only player (man or woman) to achieve that feat. She averaged 8.6 assists her sophomore season in 2002, 10.6 in 2003, and 9.6 in 2004.

LADY DEMONS, DEMONS MAKE FOR A POSTSEASON PAIR Both Northwestern State basketball programs will be involved in postseason play, as the Demons hosted Tennessee-Martin in the College Insider Tournament on March 19 in Natchitoches. The inclusion of both NSU mens and womens teams makes Northwestern State one of 34 teams to have its womens team in the NCAA Tournament and its mens team in postseason action as well. SCOTTS SPECS HAVE SUPER POWERS During the Lady Demons run to the 2014 Southland Conference Tournament championship, co-head coach Scott Stoehr pulled a reverse Clark Kent. While Kent would remove his reporter garb -- including glasses -- before transform-ing into Superman, Stoehr spent last season wearing glasses that helped propel the Lady Demons to their first NCAA Tournament berth in a decade. Beginning with the Lady Demons 63-49 first-round victory against Central Arkansas, Stoehr revived his postseason tradition, which continued through Fridays win against Nicholls. In two seasons, Stoehr and his glasses are 7-0 in games at the Merrell Center. Stoehr wore the glasses for last seasons NCAA Tournament game against Tennessee, and he plans on doing so again today when Northwestern State faces Baylor.

NORTHWESTERN STATE CAN CLAIM WINS OVER TRADITIONAL POWERS In addition to its victory against Baylor in the 1979-80 season, the Lady Demons have enjoyed some historical success against nationally prominent foes. NSU has wins over Arkansas (3), Baylor (1), Clemson (1), Duke (1), Iowa (1), Kansas (1), LSU (5), Louisi-ana Tech (5), Louisville (1), Missouri (1), New Mexico (1), Notre Dame (1), Oklahoma State (1), Ole Miss (1), Rice (2), TCU (2), Texas A&M (2) and Tulane (4).

COMEBACKS COMMON FOR LADY DEMONS When the Lady Demons rallied from a 14-point, second-half deficit against Lamar in the Southland Conference Tour-nament semifinals, it caught some in attendance at the Merrell Center by surprise. It should not have. The win against the Cardinals marked the second time this season NSU had won after trailing by at least 14 points in the second half. Against Abilene Christian on Jan. 7, Northwestern State fell behind by 15 points in the second half before storming back for a 61-56 victory. NSU owns nine victories this season in which it trailed at the half and has won three games in which it trailed at some point by 10 or more points. The largest margin the Lady Demons overcame in a victory was a 17 points in a 71-60 win against Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 26.

TRAVEL ISSUES NO ISSUE AT ALL FOR LADY DEMONS Northwestern State has made a home away from home at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, winning the Southland Conference Tournament, but the Lady Demons still need transportation to and from the Merrell Center. When the Northwestern State players awoke Friday morning, March 13 --yes, Friday the 13th -- they found their bus unable to exit the parking lot of the Country Inn and Suites in Katy. Like they tend to do at halftime, the Lady Demons coaching staff -- co-head coaches Brooke and Scott Stoehr and assistants Kasondra Foreman and Eric Tilmont -- adjusted on the fly. They enlisted the help of Brooke Stoehrs parents, players parents, support staff and even hotel staff to help get the team down the frontage road of Interstate 10 to the Merrell Center. Dubbing the trip an AAU-style endeavor, the Lady Demons were able to share laughs and do some impromptu bonding on the car rides to the arena. The change in transportation did not hinder the Lady Demons, who defeated Nicholls 84-67 in the SLC quarterfinals before boarding their bus to return to the team hotel.

  • BROOKE & SCOTT STOEHRCO-HEAD COACHESTHIRD SEASON AT NORTHWESTERN STATE SECOND SEASON OVERALL

    LOUISIANA TECH (2002) - BS NEBRASKA-WESLEYAN (1997) - SS

Brooke and Scott Stoehr became the North-western State womens basketball programs first pair of co-head coaches in its first three-plus decades of history. The Stoehrs made headlines then, and they havent stopped since. In three seasons, the Stoehrs have led the Lady Demons back to the heights the program enjoyed in the halcyon days from the 1980s until the mid-2000s. Twice in those three seasons, the Stoehrs

have guided Northwestern State into the NCAA Tournament, earning the first back-to-back bids in program history. The Stoehrs worked quickly, inheriting a six-win team, doubling that win total in their first season (2012-13) and then producing consecutive NCAA Tournament trips. Like every coach hopes for, the Stoehrs have proven they can allow their team to peak at the precise moment, as Northwestern State has won its last seven conference tournament games, including an unprecedented four wins in four days run to capture the 2015 Southland Conference Tournament crown. During the Lady Demons run to the second SLC tourney crown in as many seasons was a milestone for the pair. Northwestern States 84-67 victory against Nicholls in the tournament quarterfinals was the 50th of the Stoehrs career. The end of the 2014-15 season looked in many ways like the close of the 2013-14 season, when Northwestern State ended a 10-year stretch between NCAA Tournament appearances. A four-game win streak pushed NSU into a first-round bye in the tourna-ment before the Lady Demons added three more wins at Katy, Texas, including a 62-44 victory against Stephen F. Austin in the championship game. The seven-game win streak came to an end at top-seeded Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament -- a game that was tied at halftime -- but the results of the Stoehrs efforts to restore the shine to the NSU program were evident. With a 12-18 overall record and 7-11 Southland Conference, the duo guided the program back to the league tournament. Through the course of the SLC season, the Lady Demons upset four of the top five teams in the final standings including Oral Roberts who went on to the NCAA Champion-ship Tournament, Sam Houston who participated in the Womens Basketball Invitational (WNIT), and McNeese who made it to the Womens Basketball Invitational (WBI). Their first recruiting class featured standout point guard Janelle Perez who was named All-Southland Conference and the freshman of the year. Brooke spent the last three years prior to NSU as an assistant coach at Texas Tech and recently helped guide the Lady Raiders to a third round appear-ance in the Womens National Invitational Tournament. Prior to Texas Tech, she spent a season on the staff at Southern Mississippi and three years on the staff at her alma mater, Louisiana Tech following a stay at Arkansas-Little Rock. The 34-year old was a standout player at Hamburg (Ark.) High School and played collegiately at Louisiana Tech from 1998-2002 where she served as a

two-year captain and starting point guard as a junior and senior, while leading the Lady Techsters to an impressive 119-16 mark under legendary coach Leon Barmore. She was instrumental in leading Louisiana Tech to four NCAA Champion-ship appearances, including the Final Four in 1999 and two more Elite Eight appearances. During her playing days, Louisiana Tech won four regular-season conference titles and conference tournament crowns, while only losing one conference game. The 2001 All-Sun Belt Conference selection ended her career ranked as the NCAA Division I all-time career free throw percentage leader at 91.5 percent, hitting 268-of-292 attempts. As a senior, Stoehr was named an NCAA post-graduate scholarship finalist, WAC All-Academic, NCAA Woman of the Year nominee, Verizon Academic All-District VI and National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American. In high school, she was named to the Parade All-American team and was the Arkansas and Southwest Region Gatorade Player of the Year. Scott, who received his degree in biology from Nebraska Wesleyan in 1997 and his masters degree in kinesiology from North Texas in 1999, began his coaching career at Nebraska Wesleyan University and followed that with stints at North Texas, Florida State, Arkansas-Little Rock and Louisiana Tech before leaving the college ranks for high school in 2008. At Southern Mississippi, Brooke worked primarily with the perimeter players. Her responsibilities also included recruiting, scouting opponents, film breakdown and assisting with all aspects of the Lady Eagle basketball camps. Prior to her stint at Southern Miss, she spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech, where her primary duties included serving as the academic counselor, recruiting with an emphasis in Arkansas and Louisiana, scouting reports, guard development, summer camps and overseeing the Lady Techsters weight and conditioning program. While at Louisiana Tech, Stoehr was instrumental in development of the guards, which included three All-Western Athletic Conference selections and a WAC Player of the Year. She also helped Louisiana Tech claim back-to-back WAC regular-season titles as well as the programs 25th-straight NCAA Champion-
