The University of North Georgia was formed through the consolidation of North Georgia College & State University and Gainesville State

College, two of the top-performing schools in the University System of Georgia, in January 2013. Positioned in the fastest-growing

region of the state, UNG comprises four campuses united by a single mission focused on academic excellence and academic and co-

curricular programs that develop students into leaders for a diverse and global society.

The University of North Georgia is a University System of Georgia leadership institution and is The Military College of Georgia. With

more than 16,000 students, the University of North Georgia is the state’s seventh-largest public university. The university offers more

than 100 programs of study ranging from certificate and associates degrees to professional doctoral programs.

The University of North Georgia was ranked No. 22 in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2014 ranking of public universities in the south.

It is the second oldest public university in the University System of Georgia having been founded in 1873 and is one of only six senior

military colleges in the United States. The average high school grade point of an incoming freshman at UNG is 3.54, the third highest in

the state behind only the University of Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH GEORGIA

UNGATHLETICS.COM 9

While the University of North Georgia has grown exponentially over the past decade, the city in which it is based still has the small town

charm that makes North Georgia one of the special places in the state of Georgia.

Dahlonega is nestled in the heart of the North Georgia Mountains, just south of the state’s highest peak, Blood Mountain. The town has

a population of just over 5,000, up more than 40 percent from 2000. It was the site of the first major gold rush in the United States

with thousands of men flocking to the city after the discovery of gold in 1828. You can’t miss seeing Dahlonega gold on a visit to the city

as the steeple of UNG’s Price Memorial Hall is coated in gold from the city. You will also see Dahlonega gold on a drive through Atlanta

as it covers the dome of the Georgia State Capitol, a tradition that started in 1958.

The city maintains the charm of a small town but there is plenty to do for students and residents alike, from some of the best outdoor

activities offered in the state to shopping at one of the top outlet destinations in the southeast, the North Georgia Premium Outlets,

located less than 15 minutes away in neighboring Dawsonville. Dahlonega is less than an hour from downtown Atlanta located just over

50 miles north at the end of Georgia 400.

The town has inspired many artists through the years, most famously Zac Brown who grew up in Lumpkin County, and is still considered

the cultural hub of the North Georgia Mountains hosting over 10 festivals each year.

As Corey Smith states in his song about the town, it is easy to feel like you’ve struck gold in Dahlonega.

HAINES & CAROLYN HILLSTADIUM

“We are so blessed to be able to call Haines & CarolynHill Stadium our “home.” Each day our staff and student-athletes have the opportunity to practice or play at “TheHill” we do not take for granted.

The atmosphere that has been created at the UNG Softball Complex is unique to the NCAA DII level - we loveplaying our games at “The Hill”.

- Mike Davenport

Home to the University of North Georgia softball team, Haines & Carolyn

Hill Stadium was constructed during the fall of 2008 and features a first-

class facility for the Nighthawks. With 222 chair back seats, fans enjoy a

perfect venue for NCAA Softball. The newly constructed “Hill Stadium”

features three separate press boxes for media members that stretch 45

feet. It has been home to four NCAA Regionals and NCAA Super

The Streak: 51 Consecutive Wins

Three hundred and sixty nine. That’s not a stat. Well, maybe itis. In 2010, the North Georgia softball team made one of themost impressive runs in the history of college softball. Threehundred and sixty nine is the number of days the program wentwithout knowing what it felt like to lose a game on the field ofplay. For three hundred and sixty nine days, the North Georgiasoftball team was, in one word, perfect.

From the 2009 NCAA Division II Championship (the division’sequal to the Women’s College World Series) to the same eventin 2010, North Georgia never lost a game. A 13-0 February ledto a 20-0 March. April would be perfect as well. The broomsgot a lot of work that season as North Georgia swept its waythrough every single Peach Belt series, even a series againstlong-time rival Alabama-Huntsville, another perennial power inDII softball.

Mike Davenport’s team finished the regular season at 41-0 andjust for good measure, went 4-0 at the Peach Belt’s conferencetournament. The NCAA Dahlonega Regional? Three more winsthere. A Super Regional against Lenoir-Rhyne would provide twomore wins without a loss.

Like the saying goes though, “all good things must come to anend.” This streak would be no exception. After an opening roundwin against Molloy College in the NCAA Division II Championship, one year and four days since the last time theteam didn’t win a softball game, Valdosta State would end theperfection. The next day the season was over, but the accomplishment of that team, which etched its name in collegesoftball lore, will never be forgotten.

Fifty-one consecutive wins. The second longest streak in the history of NCAA softball.
