Newfoundland & Labrador Association of Fire Services
Welcome to your official 2015 Convention Registration kit! In this kit you will find every-thing you need to get informed about what’s in store for you at this years convention... and boy do we have a lot in store!
As was mentioned in the last edition of the fire news,
the association has taken great consideration in
all the feedback that was recevied from last years
survey’s, as well as all of the feedback your regional
directors have received personally while spending
time chatting and visiting all of our members. With
months of planning, meetings full of deliberation,
consideration, and thoughtful decision making, we
feel like this years convention is going to be the best
we’ve ever had!
This year’s format is going to be a little different from
what you might remember in past years. We’ve added
some time on to the convention, spaced out the ses-
sions a little more, and are ensuring more available
time for all of our members to enjoy the tradeshow
and meet with the vendors and suppliers who will
be showcasing their products this year. Convention
2015 is sure to begin with a bang, as we have grate-
fully been offered an opportunity by some of our
sustaining members, for anyone who would like to
participate in a day full of some awesome demonstra-
tions, and to enjoy an evening full of laughs, music,
food, and fun!
Pre-conference kick off at the Gander fire hall, Thursday, hosted by Chandler Sales, K & D Pratt, and Technical Rope Rescue!
Beginning at 12pm, demonstrations will be taking
place around the fire hall area, where delegates can
take part and get a hands on feel for some products.
This will all lead up to an evening of BBQ, Live Music,
and a whole lotta fun! I won’t say too much about
the event, as we’ll be sending out a seperate poster
that you can display in your fire hall with all the info,
and we want this to be a surprise to all. But I will say,
and this is the best part... The sustaining members
who are hosting this event, are offering it to anyone
who wants to attend...Absolutely free!! That’s right,
no need to register for the rest of the convention in
order to take part in the Thursday event, just be sure
to RSVP to the event. We hope to see everyone there!
Friday is sure to be a crowd pleaser too, as we’ve got
the entire day filled with some excellent sessions for
everyone to take part in. Registration for the confer-
ence will open on Friday morning at 8:30 am, and
sessions are set to begin at 10 am. The tradeshow will
also open for Friday, so there will be plenty of time
to meet with vendors, get your questions answered
about product, and even purchase some association
apparel.
The Friday sessions will be a mix of outdoor demos,
and indoor presentations, and it’s going to be up
to you to pick which sessions you’d like to take part
in. Pay special attention on your registration forms
this year, as you will need to select the sessions you
will be attending, so that we know what our space
requirements will be. We felt that by doing it this
way, departments would be able to avail of the vari-
ous sessions and bring back even more knowledge
and info to your departments. The following pages
will outline the different sessions taking place, so as
to help you make your choices about which ones to
attend.
Our official opening ceremonies will still take place
on the friday evening, but you’re definitely not going
to want to miss anything ahead of the official open-
ing... Just wait until you see what we’ve got planned
for you!
Saturday and Sunday will be sure to not dissapoint
either, and we’ve worked very hard to bring you an
agenda full of informative, local speakers, and con-
tent that is applicable to each and every one of our
members and departments here in the province.
We listened to your requests for more local content
geared toward our specific circumstances here in the
province, and we think your going to appreciate the
sessions we’ve put together for you. Please be aware
that while the sessions lined up for the agenda are
set, the timing of the agenda is still a little bit fluid,
so keep an eye on our website for any updates or ses-
sion time changes.
If you haven’t booked your rooms yet, now is the time
to do so. You can call any one of the hotels in Gander
to book your room nights, and please use the room
block code NLAFS2015 - and don’t forget to book your room nights for Thursday night as well... We don’t think your going to want to miss it!
There is no doubt that this years convention is going
to be a crowd pleaser, and we know you’re going to
enjoy the line up we’ve carefully put together for you.
So have a browse through this years convention kit,
decide on the sessions you want to take part in, and
send in your registration info. We can’t wait to see all
of you this year in Gander, and we are so excited to
bring NLAFS 2015 to you!
To another successful conference, the opportunity
to see some new faces, and to welccome returning
faces, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Gander, NL
and our 51st annual convention!

Why You Want to Take This Course
The Fireworks Safety and Awareness Course is designed to introduce you to the world of professional fire-works in Canada. In order to be able to use, handle or work on a crew of a professional fireworks display you must:
- have successfully completed the Course- apply to ERD (Explosives Regulatory Division) in Ottawa to receive a Fireworks Operator Certificate (FOC).
The FOC will allow you to work on a professional fireworks display as a crew member but you cannot be in charge, this is the job of a Fireworks Supervisor. Once you have worked on 3 shows as an Operator you can apply to upgrade your FOC to Supervisor. This is only necessary if you wish at some point to be able to organize and be in charge of a fireworks display. Many people just want to be able to work on a fire-works display and have no need to upgrade; it is completely up to you.
Once you complete the Course you will be given a completion certifi-cate. To obtain your FOC you send the certificate to ERD along with Application to obtain Fireworks Operator Certificate (Form F17-01), a photo and the FOC fee of $150.
(We have every reason to hope that this will be reduced to $100 very soon.) If everything is in order you will receive your FOC in the mail. It is valid for a 5 year period, at the end of which you will need to renew.
Obtaining your FOC opens an excit-ing new world of fireworks to you. The fireworks team on a show are performers just like any other, it’s just that we are not on stage and work in darkness, but the audience loves what we do just like any big name star! Many fireworks compa-nies are looking to add new crew members to their team so there are opportunities to gain experi-ence, travel, entertain thousands of people and even get paid doing it.
About The FOC CourseThe Course as taught by Fireworks FX is approximately 6 hours of classroom and 2 hours of practical. The practical is the fun part, this is where the course participants get to actually handle, setup and fire the fireworks we learn about in the course.
The Course fee of $100 provides you with the Display Fireworks Manual, all materials and your participation in setting up and firing a fireworks display. There are no prerequisites to take the Course, but you must be 18 to apply for your FOC.
InstructorYour Course instructor is Fred Wade who has over 30 years in the world of fireworks (and still has all his fin-gers).
From England’s stately homes to the deserts of Turkmenistan, the islands of the Caribbean and to the smallest festival imaginable right here at home in CANADA, Fred has been there.
He will share as much of this experi-ence as possible during your time in the Course.

The unique characteristics of confined spaces and difficult access areas may cre-ate hazards that are possibly deadly to the persons entering them. Over 60% of deaths in these areas are actually persons attempting to rescue. Preplanning is cru-cial and Emergency Responders should have a knowledge and understanding of the potential hazards of confined spaces in the areas they serve.
This session will be presented by Todd LeGrow: Todd has been a Rescue Team Manager & Instructor with Technical Rope & Rescue for 4 years. Technical Rope & Rescue specializes in the areas of Work at Height, Confined Space and Hazardous Materials.

PyroLance introduces its fine mist of water through a small opening less than 1/8 inches – 3mm. A rapid reduction in tem-perature occurs without introducing large amounts of oxygen, which greatly reduces the likelihood of flashover or backdraft. Firefighters can manage the thermal layer while remaining outside in a safe, shielded, defensive position. PyroLance makes fire scenes safer by cooling the thermal layer and eliminating the risk of backdraft and flashover.
PyroLance uses pressurized water with a non-metallic aggregate, it is completely non-heat producing and does not
generate sparks. This gives PyroLance the ability to quickly breach and/or cut most types of materials without creating any additional heat or sparks. In addition, with-out the requirement of any other tools, it becomes both a defensive and offensive fire attack tool.
PyroLance as a disruptive technology is a true revolution in firefighting equipment and operational methodology, and the key to achieving a true transitional attack capability

at home. So we decided that bringing a sesision to both our firefighters and their families would be an excellent idea. And as far as being an experet on the subject, we couldn’t think of a more suitable presenter, than Aubrey Vincent.
Aubrey Vincent is the Director of Emergency Disaster Services for Newfoundland and Labrador with The Salvation Army.
He is a retired teacher and holds a Master of Education degree in Leadership. Aubrey is an Approved Instructor for many of the Salvation Army National Disaster Training Programs.
For the past 7 years, Aubrey has been quite involved with Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). He is an Approved Instructor for Individual and Peer CISM, Group Crisis Intervention CISM and Grief following Trauma CISM.
Aubrey, with the assistance of many trained peer debriefers in NL, is quite active in providing facilitation for crisis interventions for the St. John’s Regional Fire Department as well as many other volunteer Fire Departments and other First Responder Groups.
Aubrey has also become a Certified Instructor of Mental Health First Aid: Adults interacting with Youth. He had taught several courses throughout the province.
Aubrey firmly believes in the principles of CISM and has become a strong advocate of CISM training and the various CISM inter-ventions for those impacted my major crisis in their lives.
