2015 New York International Auto Show

Luxury cars and the fuel regulationsEven thought the New York show is the oldestcar show in North America, it can getoverlooked next to the Detroit, Los Angeles, and Chicago shows. This year, however, NewYork played host to a number of big debuts.

When Cadillac announced in January that NewYork would be the backdrop for the introductionof their new flagship CT6, the gauntlet hadbeen thrown down. But it wasn’t until the firstweek of April when the relevance of the showcame into focus.

Luxury cars were front and center for the 2015NYIAS. Cadillac’s full-sized CT6 introduces thenew senior platform and Cadillac’s exclusive3.0L twin-turbo V6. Across town rival Ford stoleGM’s thunder by surprising the audience withthe new Lincoln Continental concept and thebrand’s new styling direction. Other new andrevised luxury models were introduced byRolls-Royce, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti,BMW, and Porsche. But it’s not like the luxurycars of years past.

Instead of burly big-displacement V8 enginesmotivating over-weight land yachts, these newmodels are fuel efficient and trim. Starting with

the Cadillac CT6’s new Omega platform blendsaluminum and high strength steel to make a bigcar that weighs less than the mid-sizedcompetition, while choices under the hoodrange from a 400hp six-cylinder down to aturbocharged four-cylinder. Lincoln’s sedan alsogets nothing larger than a turbo 3.0L V6.

As manufacturers plan for their future models,American fuel regulations are playing thegreatest role in history. When past regulationsmight have limited the variations or enginesoffered, stronger fuel economy rules createwhole new powertrains targeting just the US.

To reach previously unreachable goals, moreand more models are offering electric-only,hybrid, and even the return of diesel engines.Plug-in hybrids from BMW and Mercedes-Benzboost fuel economy numbers to near regulatedgoals, years ahead of schedule.

The New York show has introduced the world tomany new vehicles over the last century and,as the industry’s last car show of the season, manufacturers want to take the chance toquench the appetite for cars and trucks untilfall.

World Car of the Year

2015 Mercedes-Benz C-ClassAfter taking third in the European Car of the Year competition (behind

the winning Volkswagen Passat and 2nd place Citroen C4 Cactus), the

award of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class as World Car of the Year was a bit

of a surprise.

Mercedes-Benz did a great job with the latest generation C-Class.

Riding on Mercedes-Benz’ new Modular Rear Architecture (MRA)

platform, the car is positioned for the future. The MRA platform

decreases the vehicle’s weight while allowing Mercedes-Benz to create a

larger number of models from this one architecture including the GLC

(replacing the GLK) and the next-generation E-Class.
