It is some two years on from the formation of the National Association of Building Designers (NABD) in July 2013. Now in 2015 we are again gathered for the 2nd annual National Building Design Awards in Melbourne. The Inaugural event in 2014 will be remembered by those that attended as a momentous night and occasion for the NABD. The room was filled with Building Designers from across Australia and was alive with enthusiasm and comradery. The Building Design profession is one that has over the past years gained in popularity with clients and students alike. Clients are realising the benefits of engaging Building Designers and Building Design is now seen as a career of choice amongst young and upcoming designers.

Building Designers work closely with clients and builders to ensure the design outcome is not only aesthetically pleasing but is also practical and functional with a real focus on buildability and the clients budgetary requirements. From public buildings to private residences, Australian Building Designers are at the forefront, leading the way, and having an enormously positive impact on the built environment.

The entrants are all members of strong State/Territory-based Associations that cultivate design excellence and professional development within their membership. So if you have an upcoming project, be sure to partner with a Building Designer who is an active member of their State/Territory association.

This year we will recognize Australias best Building Design for 2015. We will also pause to recognize a number of individuals who have gone above and beyond for the Building Design profession. The formation of NABD was a direct result of the commitment and passion of the following individuals. Greg Pershouse (BDAQ Immediate Past President), Michael OSullivan (BDAV Immediate Past President), Steven Claridge (current BDAQ President), Alastair McDonald (current BDAV President). As representatives of their State Associations these four worked extremely hard to ensure that the NABD became a reality. On behalf of the State/Territory Associations and their members, the current NABD Council would like to sincerely thank them for their dedication and service to the NABD.

This year with the help and support of our major partner James Hardie and our silver sponsor Weathertex and bronze sponsor Ametalin we again bring you some very fine examples of the astonishing work being produced by Australian Building Designers. Once again our judges have had to deliberate long and hard over the multitude of extremely worthy entries. I would like to thank the judges for their efforts and valuable input in deciding this years winners.

You will find within the pages of this magazine some truly inspiring designs for projects located across Australia. From rural to inner city locations, from beautiful interiors to outstanding commercial projects that are as the judges have stated world class. Design work that is sustainable, inventive and creative is what sets these projects apart.

The brief for this complex project was to activate the northern end of the Northbridge Piazza entertainment precinct, with its bars, restaurants, nightclubs, specialty shops and open air cinema. This meant having to deal with the City of Perth, the tenants, the landlord, 26 consultants and multiple state and local government authorities, making for a challenging design process. The result is a sophisticated solution that relies on its industrial aesthetic and framework to create a glass house environment where the sculptural quality of the micro-brewery becomes the focal point both inside and outside the building. Two glass towers act as lanterns, marking the entrance at night, while the working 12 hectolitre micro-brewery gives the interiors an excitingly complex industrial aesthetic with all the brewing pipework and kettles exposed. A rich mix of industrial materials, such as glass, steel copper, raw concrete and recycled bricks, take their cue from the sites industrial history and provide a relaxed and unpretentious backdrop that is intimate and engaging, inviting the public to explore. Patrons enter the venue by physically walking through the micro-brewery. There is no fake faade or faux brewing kettles, what is poured from the beer font is brewed only meters away. Visually, the venue responds respectfully to the site, giving the interior a robust industrial aesthetic with superb interplay between form, function and the patrons. The balance of industrial materials provide an unpretentious backdrop creating a relaxed and welcoming space. Impressive and bold!

Planet Homes DisplayDesigner: Reitsma + AssociatesPhone: (07) 5491 6834Web: www.reitsma.com.auBuilder: Planet Homes QldLocation: Pelican Waters, QldPhotographer: Kelly BlackThis project challenges peoples perceptions about display homes and demonstrates what is possible on a 15m wide and 480m lot. The homes multi-level layout is expressed from the street via the strong horizontal roof plains, and the broad overhang, in combination with an open carport, give the home a sense of depth. The elevated pool, which appears to have no pool fence, becomes the focal point to all living areas, bedrooms and the detached studio while the clean-lined kitchen, with flush rear wall and concealed butlers pantry, takes minimal kitchens to the next level. The homes rectilinear single depth layout, wrapped in glass and courtyards, achieves its point of difference.

A simple yet dramatic solution to a simple brief that asked to take the client away from a more provisional style of residential architecture by stripping the house down to the absolute basics, to accentuate the form so as to contrast with the existing suburban fabric. Using simple common materials, such as texture coated concrete and brickwork, provided the designer with the tools to create this fine example of minimalist design. Thus standard materials used in a modern way illustrate poetry through minimalism, and give durability over time.

This farmhouse style house utilises its site to not only expand and frame the views to various aspects, but also by being thermally efficient and comfortable. The designer worked closely with the client to achieve a design that meets their needs through presenting detailed images, three dimensional models and a comprehensive brief. It has satisfied the client brief, and works with materials that suit the surrounds and are low maintenance. The environmental efficiency is such that it has a low footprint and very good build quality using locally sourced materials.

This site, with its coastal location, suited a contemporary beach house style. The light freshness of this house is noticed immediately with contemporary detailing on the faade. Successively sized portholes create interest with Eco outdoor Newport limestone cladding accentuating the light fresh appearance. Upon entering the house the natural light feeling is continued with the added warmth of timber flooring and cabinetry. Cantilevered timber treads extend over a pond with a glass bridge leading to the master suite. The eye is drawn out through the frameless picture window to the pool in a central courtyard. This allows maximum light penetration to the ground level whilst providing a focal point from all areas.

The conceptual strength of the house is found in the manually operated retractable roof which runs over 12 metres from north to south to cover both courtyards. A hand winch and a block and tackle, allow the slatted timber, steel and polycarbonate roof panel to help regulate sun and rain on the two outdoor spaces, a valuable feature given Melbournes famously fickle weather. Two sets of hardwood bi-folding doors, one on each side of the living room, help successfully ensure the all-important connection between indoors and out.

A light filled glazed connection from the existing house leads to the two-storey box at the rear. Built using lightweight construction methods it seems to float unanchored above the lower level enhancing the feeling of space and light that permeates the entire design. The interior spaces interact seamlessly with the lush outdoor courtyard area that is the final piece in this outstanding example of what quality building design is all about.

On entering, your first impression is that of light and space - a complete transformation from the dark warren it used to be. Rooms are generously proportioned to complement furniture collected over a lifetime, and the palette provides a modern backdrop of white, accented with charcoal planes of floor and benchtop and honey tones of timber ceilings. A departure from the conventional response, its staggered sections and borrowed views allow maximum efficiency where elements are designed for multiple functions.

Focus is on the internal views of the site rather than compromising the design in pursuit of river views. The resultant views to the outdoor areas from the new areas are the primary focus of the design, featuring a pool located close to the new build. The retention of a large existing tree beautifully compliments the house and provides substantial shading during the summer months. A cellar was added which celebrates the family business and love of wine, while the garage and loft bedroom at the rear provide a bookend to the property and enclose the views emphasising the seclusion and privacy the owners were seeking.

Preston TownhousesDesigner: Taylor Reynolds Pty LtdPhone: (03) 9417 4833Web: www.taylorreynolds.com.auBuilder: Kleev HomesLocation: Preston, VICPhotographer: Patrick ReynoldsThe design vernacular echoes the landscape of the surrounding streetscape in a contemporary manner through both its form and fabric. The form is comprised of pitched boxes, which reflect the gable-ended roofs pervading the streetscape, which are broken up by single storey garages, dividing the mass and creating a sense of rhythm and articulation. The fundamental approach was simplicity in ornamentation; the success of the homes is the restrained detailing and restricted palette of materials. The polycarbonate clad entry element is the main axis of the home, the partial translucence of this traditionally utilitarian material reutilised to allow soft, ethereal light during daylight hours, while at night the light from within serves as a lantern, invoking a sense of theatre.

With unadorned detailing and modest materials, it references the textural mid-century modern aesthetic in lieu of glossy surfaces. Honest materials - brick, concrete and timber - secured our attention and, in combination with these materials, the spaces and volumes became the focus. Prefinished oak boards, concrete and polycarbonate were employed internally to contrast against the neutral white walls. To soften the harder materials, thick woven wool carpets were used along with sheer linen curtains concealed in the ceiling recesses. The fireplace - an off the shelf proprietary item - was extended in elevation to sit more comfortably within the wall.

Working within the realms of the original 1972 construction, the design exposes the original architecture of Mordechai Benshemesh and uses the essence with a high-end New Yorkesque opulent working environment. This not only stages the expected success of the group aesthetically but also encapsulates the unison of the group of companies working under one umbrella organisation. Not withstanding the uniqueness and diversity of each sub-brand to foster their own culture and collaboration, it allows for communication within their business and across firms.

The contemporary extension references rather than imitates the existing. The charm of elements such as the fireplace and arched opening have been showcased; faded wallpaper stripped away to reveal the brick walls and brought into the modern day with a coat of white. Keeping with the palette of dark and light, textured and smooth, existing 1960s fluted timber was given a second life as cladding to the master bathroom. At the juncture between old and new the timber ceiling of the extension wraps down the wall, with the dark timber floor seamlessly linking the two and cove lighting illuminating high heritage ceilings.

Balancing Heritage Victoria, town planning and community concerns whilst still maintaining a building that was affordable to build and could offer both restoration and revitalisation of Dimmeys was an incredible challenge. Facilitating vehicle and pedestrian access to the site whilst retaining the majority of the faade was challenging. Designing a building with a vision for the future in a form that was both sympathetic to and respectful of the existing presented an enormous challenge. It is a positive response for adapting and creating adaptable buildings for our future. This building could well be converted back to commercial use in future should building requirements change.

Imagine if every home that was built actually benefitted the environment?

That was the idea behind Positive Footprints when it formed over 10 years ago, to specialise exclusively in Designing and Constructing Sustainable Homes, and to make living lightly easy to achieve.

Today our award winning homes are 8 or 9 star in energy performance, and use only 30% of mains water compared to a standard 6 star home. We pride ourselves in selecting materials that are low in embodied energy, do not contribute to the loss of rainforest & habitat, nor off-gas dangerous chemicals to the internal environment. Combined with photovoltaics, solar hot water and efficient appliances, our houses are able to be truly Carbon Positive, meaning they will use less energy than they produce.

    E D I T O R I A L

There are not too many building products in the Australian market that tick all the boxes for style, simplicity of use, price, aesthetics and environmental sustainability.

And there are definitely very few companies in Australia that still manufacture building products from PEFC-certified state forests or private hardwood suppliers and have been since 1939.

Weathertex is almost an enigma an all Australian-owned company with a better than zero carbon footprint manufacturing high-quality timber cladding for residential and commercial projects.

The latest release in Weathertexs suite of products is Weathergroove, a new timber cladding being produced in smooth, ruff sawn, woodsman or natural profiles, Available in 150, 300, 600 and 1200mm spacings, Weathergroove can be painted with any exterior-grade acrylic or solvent-based paint.

The characteristics of each profile are: Smooth - a flat surface finish Ruff Sawn - a surface finish that has the characteristics of un-uniformed vertical and

horizontal shallow lines portraying a rustic appearance. Woodsman - a finish that has the characteristics of a wood-grain effect. The pattern

pressed displays the knots and curves of natural timber trees. Natural- an unprimed surface finish that provides a unique appearance with the

features and look of raw undressed timber.

Quick and easy to install, Weathergroove has an exclusive joining system designed to clip onto the rebated edges of each panel, allowing each sheet to blend in perfectly for a continuous panel finish.

It requires no special tools, silicone or adhesives for installation, is guaranteed not to rot, split or crack for 25 years and fixes directly to the building frame.

An added bonus, Weathergroove also provides a safe and reliable means of structural bracing.Weathergroove is the largest panel product available on the Australian market and ideal for covering large areas in a short time.

Aesthetically, Weathergroove is the perfect solution to satisfy the trend for natural timber. It is 100% natural - 97% hardwood and 3% wax.Featuring unprimed board with the characteristics and appearance of raw undressed timber, the surface is pressed to create a woodgrain effect. Its rough, deep-cut pattern shows all the knots, cracks and imperfections of natural timber and it can be left to weather naturally or be stained. When allowed to weather naturally, the depth of colour will vary, subject to location and sun exposure, however the board will gradually silver. If the surface is oiled, the look of fresh brown timber is maintained.

    Weathertex Weathergroove has a thickness of 9.5mm and is available in: 3660mm x 1196mm 2745mm x 1196mm 2440mm x 1196mm

Weathertexs other range of products include Classic, Selflok and Primelok, all high-quality, natural timbers that are easy-to-install and competitively priced.

The companys commitment to environmentally sustainable does not end with its production of timber products.

Discarded wood fibre is used as nutrient rich compost; pallets are made from rejected board; bore water is pumped from an on-site aquifer, supplying the factory and then recycled on site to irrigate pasture and wood lots; and packaging is recyclable low-density polyethylene.

With more and more ordinary Australians seeking out products and companies that do more than just pay lip-service to environmental sustainability, Weathertex is the perfect choice for any building project.
