EDUCATION

IMPACT LIVES

Lucinda Owen and Bob Evans

In the news… F.R.E.D. volunteer reading opportunities happen twice a year – once in the spring and once again in the fall. This November, volunteers, ranging from working professionals to corporate retirees to prominent members of the community, gathered to visit 3 early childhood education centers to read aloud to the young children. Armed with colorful books, award certificates, and give-away prizes, the volunteers were greeted with happy smiles, hugs and laughter as they engaged the children and demonstrated the joy of reading.

Our Goal To help mobilize our diverse community leaders and stakeholders in a collaborative effort to increase the percentage of students who complete post-secondary education and/or job training after high school.

Our Strategy Support families and caregivers to improve

academic achievement Connect students with resources needed outside of

school Build stronger systems to support children and

FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE

IMPACT LIVES

Our Goal By 2020, our goal is to reduce the rate of

financially unstable households, in Montgomery County, by 20%.

Strategic Focus Areas Earn it-Keep it-Grow it!

MCUW supports collaborations that provide opportunities for residents to increase their

earnings through family-sustaining employment, keep more of their hard earned

money by managing their expenses, and growing their assets through savings and

safe, affordable housing. MCUW also works to identify and improve

community-level conditions that keep residents and neighborhoods from thriving. 2015 MCUW V.I.T.A. Results

Lynn Shah, VITA Volunteer

In the news… In partnership with Entergy Texas, Inc., MCUW provides free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) for qualifying households in various locations throughout the county. IRS-trained and certified volunteers work to ensure clients get the full refund and credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, they are entitled to. In 2015, the city of Willis VITA site, at Meador Library, experienced a 10% increase in tax returns filed, $92,000 saved in income tax preparation fees, and a total tax refund of $348,553. The economic impact of the VITA program was such a success that MCUW has added 2 additional sites for 2016.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

IMPACT LIVES

Our Goal Our goal is to increase the number of residents in Montgomery County living at a healthy weight by 10% by 2020.

Our Mission Our mission is to empower the people of Montgomery County to seek their highest health potential by promoting healthy choices through education in nutrition, physical activity, and health literacy.

In the news… The MCUW Healthy Living Alliance launched their Workplace Wellness program and experienced measurable success in its pilot year. Through the 2 pilot sites of Greenleaf Elementary and the City of Willis, employees opted to participate in the program as it would offer daily group exercise, nutrition and general health education, and before and after health screenings. Each “class” is offered weekly on site and is conducted by trained professionals in the Health & Wellness field. While 50% of the Greenleaf Elementary School staff experienced improved health and weight loss, a staggering 90% of Willis employees benefited from the program. The 2 pilot sites have continued their second year of Workplace Wellness while 3 additional sites have been added.

9 out of 16 participants lost weight ranging from .2 to 56 pounds.

19 out of 21 participants lost weight ranging from 1.5 to 40 lbs.

In the news… The MCUW “Socks and Undies” drive, held last summer, was a huge success providing new socks and underwear to approximately 1,500 Montgomery County school children. This was largely thanks to the incredible generosity of the CHI St. Luke’s Health – The Woodlands and Lakeside Hospitals’ staff, as they collected the most items. This year’s “Coats and Mittens” drive was also a tremendous success collecting close to 1,300 items of winter clothing for Montgomery County residents in need. It was no surprise to find that the CHI St. Luke’s Health – The Woodlands and Lakeside Hospitals’ staff were the leading contributors to that drive as well. CEO and President, David Argueta commented, “At CHI St. Luke’s Health, we believe in giving back to the com-munities we serve. It’s very humbling to know that many adults and children will be able to stay warm during these winter months thanks to these donations and the work that United Way does throughout the community.”

ROCK

The MCUW Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) includes some of the most philanthropic women in the county. Members live or work in Montgomery County and, most importantly, care about supporting our community and making it a better place to live.

The WLC believes that education is one of the greatest strategies to break generational cycles of dependence, and that is why they adopted the Young Mother’s Daycare Scholarship. Daycare is one of the biggest obstacles for a young mother; an obstacle that often dictates their ability to pursue an education. The Young Mother’s Daycare Scholarship provides an opportunity for a young woman to further her post-secondary education while her child is being cared for in a safe environment.

The WLC Young Mother’s Daycare Scholarship is supported by gifts from Women’s Leadership and by the Annual Women Who Rock Fundraising Lunch.

ROCK The Woodlands Waterway Marriott was rocking as hundreds of women, and a few men, gathered for the 3rd annual “Women Who Rock” fundraising lunch on Friday, November 6th.

This year’s Women Who Rock was generously presented by Woodforest National Bank who also sponsored a full daycare scholarship for a young mom. This is the 2nd year in a row Woodforest has sponsored an entire scholarship. Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, Entergy Texas, and The Woodlands Deveopment Company also all sponsored full scholarships for the 2016-2017 school year.

This innovative approach to encouraging more women to obtain their postsecondary education has gained much momentum in just its 3 years of existence. With its rock and roll vibe, unique menu, and fun décor, business women and men love the break from the usual and enjoy the uniqueness of not only the Women Who Rock event but also the cause. This year’s event raised close to $110,000 for scholarships!

The United Way of the Piney Woods (UWPW), a DBA of Montgomery County United Way serving the residents of Walker, Houston, Liberty, Polk, San Jacinto, and Trinity Counties, has concluded its 3rd year. We have grown a lot since we started 3 years ago. We are developing deeper relationships within Walker County and its residents.

We have had continued success with the Socks ‘n Undies drive, as well as a new program called “Cupboard Clean-Out” which involves encouraging college students who are moving out, to donate unused and non-perishable items to be distributed to local food banks. In addition, most apartment complexes rotate used furniture out of their units which are also donated to local missions in Walker County.

Walker County and Liberty County have suffered from 4 floods since April 27, 2015 along the Trinity River. We have been working closely with FEMA and NCCC to begin the clean up process. United Way of the Piney Woods ran a “mail out” campaign, sending campaign letters to all of the chamber of commerce members in Walker County, and we have collected $1,700 in donations. Not only did this promote community involvement but it has opened the doors to more networking opportunities for Cooperate Campaigns in the future. We have also established a Long Term Recovery Committee and Unmet Needs Committee to begin discussing individual cases and finding them the necessary resources to begin rebuilding. The LTRC is also organizing a fundraising banquet in April to help raise more money for the Disaster Relief efforts in Walker County.

CONNECT

INFORMATION & REFERRAL

2015 HELPLINE CALLS

In the news… MCUW is considered the hub of information and referral for client needs in Montgomery County, so it’s important that we provide that information in various ways. Along with the helpline, we have created what’s called the Community Resource Directory or “CRD”. The CRD is a collection of contact information for over 300 organizations and 700 programs that offer various services including counseling, medical care, legal aide, basic needs, financial assistance, as well as volunteer opportunities; all of which are organized and categorized to make it easy for the reader to follow. The CRD is free to nonprofit organizations as well as organizations in the business of helping people. It can be purchased for the cost of printing to anyone, and the CRD can always be found online at www.mcuw.org.

2015-2016 Community Resource Directory

Along with our impact and strategic work, is the work we do connecting those in need to the

best and most appropriate resources. From basic needs to crisis intervention to those searching

for disaster relief resources, we point people in the right direction for getting their

individualized needs met.

Information and Referral includes the following: HelpLine

Youth Yellow Pages and 2-1-1 Cards Senior Resource Guide

Community Resource Directory

Also available at the MCUW offices is the first Monday of the month Law Line. The Woodlands

Bar Association provides attorneys to be available to the helpline on the first Monday of

each month. Attorneys give general legal information to Montgomery County residents

along with referrals to appropriate services.

Montgomery County United Way believes systemic change can only happen when non profits and communities work together to reduce poverty, increase educational opportunities, and improve the overall health and wellness conditions for young children, adults and senior citizens.

In 2013, the Integrated Collaboration Council was formed to address service gaps in Montgomery County. It was determined that a more collaborative approach addressing the needs of Montgomery County residents would begin to close these gaps and improve more lives than if each community partner were to continue working alone or addressing just 1 of the priority areas.

The Council has funded 7 collaborative efforts, consisting of more than 16 partners. To qualify for funding, each collaboration must consist of 2 or more community partners, focus on 2 or 3 of the priority areas including education, health & wellness, and financial independence, as well as maintain their accountability status according to the standards MCUW requires.

This collaboration has allowed participating agencies the ability to expand their outreach services to youth up to age 24 (MCYS), expand their advocacy efforts beyond the scope of foster care (CASA), and leverage MCUW funding and support to secure additional dollars (415K) to move the collaboration under one roof in February of 2016.

LEAD ACCOLADES 2015 4 STAR CHARITY NAVIGATOR STATUS A great way to research a nonprofit’s commitment to accountability, transparency and fiscal responsibility, is to have a charity watchdog do it for you. Charity Navigator, a nonprofit accountability group celebrated by Forbes, Business Week, and Kiplinger’s Financial Magazine, applies their unique method of data-driven analysis to evaluate the health, viability, and practices of individual nonprofit organizations.

For the second year in a row, Montgomery County United Way was awarded a 4 out of 4-star rating for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency. According to Charity Navigator President and CEO Michael Thatcher, who presented MCUW with a letter of commendation, only 21% of the charities rated receive this distinguished honor 2 years in a row, which indicates that Montgomery County United Way “outperforms most other charities in America.”

2015 UNITED WAY WORLDWIDE BUSINESS MATRIX RATING

2015 BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU RECOGNITION As the only BBB approved charity in Montgomery County, we are proud to announce that we have, once again, met all 20 Better Business Bureau “Standards for Charity Accountability” as part of their Philanthropy Review Program.

2015 GUIDESTAR SILVER PARTICIPANT

Every year, our staff submits the Database 2 Survey and the Community Impact Survey for United Way Worldwide. This information is used to determine our Business Matrix

rating, which tells the size of the organization and progress made navigating the community impact path.

The UWW Business Matrix is a combination of a number and a letter. The number indicated relates to money – how many people live in our area, how many corporate headquarters and regional offices are in our geographical area,

etc. The letter indicates progress as a community impact United Way – A means the United Way is a traditional United Way, C means the United Way is well on it way to a community impact model and B indicates the United Way is

transitioning from a traditional model to a community impact model.

Our rating is now a 3C , which is an improvement upon last year’s rating of 3B. This rating places us among just 28% of the United Ways comparible to our size earning the distinction.

GuideStar gathers and disseminates information about all IRS-registered nonprofit organizations and provides extensive data regarding mission, legitimacy, impact,

reputation, finances, programs, transparency, governance, and more. GuideStar allows inquiring minds to review the compiled information in order to make

good decisions when donating to charity. It’s the only program of its kind to encourage nonprofit transparency on a national scale and allows nonprofits to supplement IRS

information made available to the public.
