A message from the President and CEO

I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the ongoing progress Missouri Delta is making to be your hospital of choice for the services we provide. This past year, Missouri Delta ranked #1 in clinical process of care measures and # 3 in patient satisfaction compared to 55 Missouri hospitals. This is a testament to our entire workforce’s commit-ment to delivering the highest quality healthcare and providing the best experience for our patients.

Today’s health care environment is testing the business acumen of hos-pitals throughout the country. Slow reimbursement growth, population health risk-based contracting, shifting patient demographics and health care reform are just some of the many pressures facing our industry. The support of the Foundation, staff and community are more important than ever before. With your ongoing help and generosity, we will continue to have the resources and latest technology to be a top rated hospital for both clinical care and patient experience.

Thank you for your interest and involvement in the Foundation.

Missouri Delta Foundation

I cannot put into words the sincere appreciation I have for each donor, volunteer, board member, and colleague that I’ve had the privilege of work-ing with over the past year. Your generosity is what makes my job enjoyable!

I would like to especially thank all of those involved with the When Seconds Count Campaign to re-develop our Emergency Services. The dedication of our community leaders to this project proves that the viability of Mis-souri Delta is a top priority for the area. The overwhelming support from the hundreds of Missouri Delta Employees is further proof that we are truly “all in this together.” I look forward to breaking ground at the end of this year and bringing an Emergency Department to Missouri Delta that this community deserves.

I am also very excited to be working on the Hospital Ball for this New Year’s Eve where we can celebrate what I know will be an extremely successful year and kick off 2016!

A message from the President and CEO

Greetings from our Foundation Board President

On behalf of the MDMC board of directors let me just once again say Thank You for you your continued support of the hospital. Never has your support been more crucial than it is now as we move forward with our “ When Seconds Count” capital campaign. This is by far the largest fund raising effort ever attempted by the Hospital but I am happy to report to you that we have to date raised over $5 million of the $7 million needed for the renovation of our Emergency Department.

While the updates and renovations of the Emergency Rooms are not only important to the future success of the Hospital they are equally important if we are going to be able to continue to serve the needs of Sikeston and the surrounding communities. Again thanks for your support.

“I want to start by thanking donors, board members, foundation members and trustees for your time, your gifts, and your resources. You are greatly appre ciated and your efforts do not go unnoticed. Each person here has a vested interest in the future success of Missouri Delta Medical Center. Without you, our hospital could not reach its highest potential.

It has been a very exciting year for the Foundation as we have begun actively campaigning for the Emergency Department Renovation. We have had an outpouring of support thus far and look forward to seeing the end result of these efforts.

I encourage you to continue to look for ways that you can help to assure Missouri Delta Medical Center remains a great hospital to receive service and care. Thank you again for all that you do!

Greetings from our Chairman of the Hospital Board

Heather CouchFoundation Board President

Hospital administrators and volunteer leaders are committed to a complete re-development of Emer-gency Services at Missouri Delta Medical Center and have made excellent strides over the past two years improving key areas. In the past year alone, the door to diagnostic evaluation by a qualified medical professional wait time has decreased from 72 minutes to 12 minutes. Over the past two years, the number of patients who left the hospital without being seen has decreased from 9% to under 2%.

This renovations of the physical space will complete the re-development and provide the necessary room to deliver efficient and effective care to patients in a private and comfortable setting. It involves more than just renovating square footage.

Must-haves include:• Increasing patient privacy, confidentiality, and

comfort by providing 17 private rooms;• The latest patient management methods and

technologies to insure patients are treated quickly, appropriately and compassionately;

• An environment of care with a team of staff and physicians that will insure both quality and efficient use of time;

• A renewed focus on communication, compassion and commitment to patient satisfaction, as well as superior healthcare, for all patients.

• A larger, more comfortable waiting area includ-ing a specific “family waiting area” for families with children who wish to shelter their children from the sometimes harsh reality of today’s modern emergency room.

For emergency care, when seconds often mean the difference between life and death, choosing to drive more than 30 miles to Cape Girardeau or other hospitals outside of the region is not an option. In the case of serious trauma, the “golden hour” is the window of making sure that a patient survives and the best place for survival is a local, well-equipped, well-staffed, full-service emergency care services unit.

When Seconds Count Campaign

The When Seconds Count campaign has received pledges totaling more than $5 million! The gifts in support of the redevelopment of emergency services come from Missouri Delta’s board members, campaign steering committee members, and hospital administrators and staff, as well as early generous donations from a few members of the community. Ann D. Matthews was a longtime volunteer at Missouri Delta and was known for her commitment to the patients. She was also a steadfast donor for many years, quietly support-ing the work of the Foundation. She very generously left Missouri Delta in her estate plans and her $3.4 million gift is serving as the cornerstone gift and inspiration for this community campaign that benefits each and every one of us. While Mrs. Matthews passed away, her legacy will endure and be recognized through the thousands of lives she will continue to impact.

A celebration was held on March 17 in the hospital’s main lobby but it was not an ordinary St. Patrick’s Day party. It was to commemorate the end of the employee campaign and thank everyone who participated. Almost 300 employees

have donated for a total of $383,000 so far. “I’m excited to have received such overwhelming support from my colleagues,” said Dicky Chance, chairperson

for the staff campaign and member of the campaign Steering committee.“The generosity of our staff members at every level has been inspirational and it is incredible that we have raised more

than 5% of the overall campaign goal of $7 million. For the past seven weeks, Marcie Lawson and I met with every department and talked about how important this re-development of emergency services is for each and every one of

us. This is a service area that impacts us all since more than 56% of patietns are admitted to the hospital through the Emergency Department. May of the 18,000 patients that come in through emergency also need follow-up and a num-

ber of us are involved in that care,” said Mr. Chance.

Missouri Delta Medical Center is always striving to bring the newest technology to our community, so when presented with a new way to diagnose and treat patients having difficulty swallowing, that’s exactly what they did. With the help of the Foundation, Missouri Delta purchased a Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) system. “I knew this would offer our patients the most accurate and time efficient method of determining their readiness for solid foods,” said Jennifer Steelman, Speech-Language Pathologist at Missouri Delta. “Not only am I able to see a clear color visual of all of the muscles involved in swallowing, I can do this in real time allowing me to account for fatigue which MBSS does not.”

Traditionally patients have been required to endure a Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS) which is not only time consuming, as it involves many dif-ferent departments, but only offers an x-ray image of the patient. The FEES system can be conveniently transported to a patient’s room or can even be done in Steelman’s office at ReStart.

This is where Dorothy Smith, pictured on front, was tested to judge the improvement of her swallowing since beginning treatment. “For me, the test was very tolerable,” said Smith. The procedure involves pass-ing a flexible endoscope across the floor of a patient’s nasal passage into the pharynx so that the larynx, pharynx, and upper esophageal opening are viewed directly from above. “It feels like I need to sneeze, that’s all. There’s no pain or discomfort,” continued Smith.

The images are then recorded, with full audio, to a computer where Steelman can then analyze before sending to the physician for diagnosis. “This allows me to take a screen shot and send it along with the re-port where a picture describes more than a thousand words,” said Steelman.

Jennifer Steelman utilizess the new FEES System to help with the

diagnosis and treatment of her patient, Ms. Dorothy Smith.

Employees across every department have contributed to the Foundation throughout the years to make our hospital better for those who work here and the people we serve.

As a (very) small token of the Foundation’s sincere appreciation, each employee who donated at least $100 in 2014 was given a tumbler with the Foundation logo and the saying Ranked #1 in the State of Missouri for Clinical Processes of Care. For the full year of 2015 these employees will receive half priced beverages in the cafeteria!

“I could not be successful in my job with-out my coworkers,” said Lawson “I always say, we’re all in this together!”

To celebrate and thank the many donors who have helped provide art supplies to the Pediatric Unit of Missouri Delta, a reception was held on the after-noon of December 23, 2014 for everyone who had become a part of Mama Cooper’s Project. Each child, and their families, who stayed on the Unit the past year was invited to attend. These guests were welcomed to much more than cookies and punch, they were greeted by several members of Mama Cooper’s Family!

May Lawrence Cooper “Mama Cooper” would have been proud seeing her daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren spreading Christmas Cheer to the littlest patients of Missouri Delta.

Dr. Mark Stacy, Vice Dean for Clinical Research at Duke University, knows exactly what it’s like to be a young patient. After walking the halls of the Pediat-ric Unit, Dr. Stacy remembered something he hadn’t thought of in 50 years. “As a little boy in a hospital baby bed, I remember Mom (Jane C. Stacy) brought me a coloring book. It was a comfort at a time when I did not understand what was happening.”

He continued speaking of Mama Cooper’s Wall and Closet, “The little room with a blackboard is a nice corner of familiarity and safety for kids stuck in the hospital. The art supplies give those children a little control and comfort in difficult, often confusing and lonely moments!”

Children participating in the After Care Program of the YMCA joined in the fun as well! As one of their continuing projects, they brought additional art sup-plies for the young patients and got to meet several of the children they helped throughout the year.

“This is by far my favorite thing about my job,” said Marcie Lawson, Foundation Director. “I truly get to see the best in people. From the YMCA children who are just learning what it means to help others, to people like Dr. Mark Stacy who spent the majority of his evening in the floor playing with the patients. Moments like these truly warm my heart.”

The Missouri Delta Auxiliary is a group of 41 dedicated volunteers who work diligently to support Missouri Delta Medical Center. All proceeds from Auxiliary sales events go to fund various hospital projects. The Auxiliary has already committed to donating $10,000 toward the “When Seconds Count” Emergency Department Campaign that is currently underway. “I am truly thankful for everything the Auxiliary does for Missouri Delta Medical Center and the Foundation. I don’t know what we would do without them,” explains Marcie Lawson, Executive Director of Missouri Delta Foundation.

The Auxiliary held another success-ful Bake Sale in November. Along with the bake sale, the Auxiliary also held raffles for a beautiful afghan, handmade by Donna Shaw, and a cake donated by Susie’s Bake Shop. The total amount raised for this event was over $1,200.

3DMammography

Proves Worthwhile

In April 2013, Missouri Delta Medical Center’s Women’s Imaging Center began offering the Hologic 3D Mammog-raphy for breast cancer screening. Studies have shown 3D mammography to be a great investment.

For example, in the June 25, 2014 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), a ground breaking study was published that found Hologic’s 3D mammography screening technology significantly increased cancer detection while simultaneously reduc-ing the number of women called back for unnecessary screenings due to false alarms. The study said that reduces anxiety, as well as health care costs. With 3D mammography, a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue is produced and helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the

confusion of overlapping tissue. One former Sikeston resident even returns to her home-town because the city where she currently resides doesn’t offer the 3D mammography. Dr. Sarah Boyce Sawyer, a Dermatologist, talked to her physician in Birmingham, Ala., and found that no institution in the area offered 3D mammography.Sawyer explained that a colleague of hers, who lives in Washington D.C., received a 2D mammogram and a 3D mammogram. The 2D mammogram showed no signs of cancer, but the 3D mammogram did. “She tells everyone to request a 3D mammogram,” Sawyer said of her friend. Sawyer mentioned the story to her mother and was surprised and delighted to discover that her home town of Sikeston offered such high technology. “Many larger medical centers don’t offer 3D, and it’s unheard of to have

a community raise money for such advanced technology. I am so proud of my hometown,” Sawyer said.Sawyer makes a trip to Sikeston at least once a year just to have her an-nual mammogram performed at Mis-souri Delta Women’s Imaging Center. “I come to Sikeston every July to get the 3D,” Sawyer said. “On my last visit, the Radiologist showed me the differ-ence between the 2D mammogram I had in Birmingham compared to the 3D mammogram I had at Missouri Delta. I will never, ever get another 2D mammogram,” says Sawyer.Since the community helped Mis-souri Delta and the Foundation raise funds for the equipment, there is no extra cost to have a 3D mammogram performed at Missouri Delta. “Other facilities may charge as much as $100 extra for the 3D,” said Sharon Urhahn, Director of Marketing for Missouri Delta Medical Center. No other facility in Sikeston offers 3D mam-mography, she added. The Foundation’s annual Breast Can-cer Awareness Luncheon is held each October and raises funds for Project Mammogram, a program which offers a baseline mammogram free of charge to all women who qualify. The goal is to ensure every woman receives a screening mammogram regardless of her capability to pay. This past Octo-ber, the annual awareness luncheon raised almost $10,000 to go toward Project Mammogram. Please remember, there is no require-ment to have a physician prescription to have a screening mammogram. To make an appointment or for more information, contact the Women’s Imaging Center at 472-7330.

Members of the Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon Committee prepare pink lemonade and water for those attending the Luncheon.

The Tree Of Hope is a wonderful way to remember or honor a loved one. It is permantly displayed in the Mamography Department of Missouri Delta.

“Many larger medical centers don’t offer 3D and it’s unheard of to have a community raise money for such advanced technology. I am so proud of my home town.”
