March is Reading Awareness Month!

Benzonia Public Library and Betsie Valley District Library have partnered with the Benzie Central

student-athletes to help put emphasis on the importance of reading. The BCHS student-athletes

will be spending the month of March rotating through all the elementary schools and reading

aloud to children. There will be book drops at every location and honey stick sales at the high

school to help add books to each of the school libraries. Additionally, all donated children’s and

young adult books, in good condition, dropped off at BPL and BVDL during the month of March

will be taken to the schools to be added to their collections.

We will celebrate National Reading Awareness Month with a kids’ day carnival! This will take place

Saturday, March 21st, 1-4pm, Upper Level of the Mills Community House.

(Home of Benzonia Public Library) During that event student-athletes will be

on hand to run fun “carnival games”, face painting, a photo booth and of

course some reading time. Prizes, snacks and crafts! A day of fun and

community that you do not want to miss!

In addition to all the fun at the kid’s day carnival, BCHS student-athletes will

be selling honey sticks and will continue to take book donations.

This is a student lead project, students wanting to help students. Let’s do all we can to show our support!!

Board of Trustees

I first met the Benzonia library a long time ago. My parents, Edward and

Mary Jo Johnson, bought our house—the Carrier House—that sits on the

top of East Hill in Benzonia in 1959. I passed the library twice a day while I

went to Crystal Lake Elementary, and I would often stop.

Mrs. Wheeler was the first librarian I met at the library. She was stern and

quiet with silver hair and she smelled of lilacs. She loved reading, she loved

books and she loved the library! She introduced me to The Box Car

Children and I fell in love with reading. As Dr. Seuss would say: Oh the

places you go when the first page you read—well, he didn’t quite put it that way, but I’m sure that is

what he meant.

Mrs. Sleeper was from New England. She had a cool accent. She was the minister’s wife and was one of

my favorite librarians. She introduced me to Tom Swift, and I was hooked on science fiction—it is still

my favorite genre.

My mother was the librarian for many years; I still smell her coffee and hear Interlochen on the radio

when I enter the library. Her name is on a plaque next to the grandfather clock…along with Mrs.

Wheeler and Mrs. Sleeper and the other librarians who have breathed the breath of life into the library

over its ninety-year history.

She is part of a very special group: a group that shaped the thoughts and beliefs of children and adults

for generations. I ran for the Benzonia Library Board because I wanted to acknowledge and support this

very special group and this very special library.

I left Benzie County for a while, as most are wont to do. When I came back I followed in my father’s

footsteps and taught English at Benzie Central Middle School for 20 years. I developed a close working

relationship with the library, and for many years students in my classroom were able to check out books

from the Benzonia library through an inter-library loan system which I set up with a past librarian and

am restarting with the current librarian.

I would like to receive newsletters, program updates and

other library information via email.

Your Library Board Shaun Johnson-Working For You

The library is getting a make over. But fresh paint and new carpet will never replace childhood memories.

I look forward to working on the library board as we attempt to

create a new generation of memories.
