ACCURACYCNC routing systems holds tolerances measured in thousandths of an inch, reducing waste and assembly time. Whether building one piece or one thousand pieces and they will all be exactly the same.

DECREASED HANDLING TIME, CONSOLIDATE PROCESSESThe traditional approach to woodworking breaks the process into multiple steps. Such as: 1) cutting material to size on a panel saw or cabinet saw; 2) adding rabbets and dados on a different saw or after changing blades; 3) adding adjustable shelf holes using a drill jig or boring machine; 4) possibly adding drawer hardware using a jig or template to locate the screw or hinge hardware holes. The CNC approach combines all these processes into a single operation. Sheet goods can be cut down to size, dados, rabbets, shelf pin holes, hinge hardware and drawer hardware holes can be cut, drilled or milled while handling the sheet only once. Dovetail drawers can be produced from sheet goods in a single step. One operator loads the material, starts the milling cycle, and changes tools when necessary. CNC routers equipped with an automatic tool change system can change tools when required, freeing the operator to work on additional tasks while the CNC system cuts the parts to size and adds the additional features mentioned previously. When the material processing is complete the operator removes the finished parts and starts the process again.

Dovetail drawers can be produced from sheet goods in a single step. One operator loads the material, starts the milling cycle, and changes tools when necessary. Work Force MultiplierBecause CNC routing is so efficient, one operator is often able to operate several machines at a time. CNC systems operate without supervision. Your CNC will work while you work on another task or even while you are in another room or having coffee. Our customers often set up long carvings at the end of the work day and let the machine work the second shift alone. Imagine making money while you sleep.

Eliminate human error on the shop floorEach new step of the woodworking process requires an additional setup operation and each new setup is an opportunity for error. Each new step may also require an additional operator.

Legacy’s hybrid CNC systems allow you to quickly move from carving a panel or embellishing a spindle, to cutting parts to size so you can….

INTRODUCE NEW PRODUCT LINESCNC systems of the past only processed sheet goods. Today’s CNC woodworking systems can create 3D carved moldings, mill complex joinery like dovetail drawers and boxes, and even produce intricate spindles allowing you to offer new embellishments, upgrades, and products without hiring highly skilled and expensive new employees.

OFFER NEW SERVICESMany owners of CNC woodworking systems use the increased capacity of their shops to produce parts for other cabinetmakers, furniture builders, and specialty woodworking outlets.

PRODUCE VALUE ADDED EMBELLISHMENTSIn a highly competitive world you want to be able to add that extra “bling” factor. Something that sets you apart from the rest of the pack. That may be carved columns on a kitchen island, corbels to support a bar counter top, or ornate moldings added to a home

theater. Today’s CNC systems will allow you to add this type of embellishment easily, quickly, and affordably.

PRODUCE EXPENSIVE OUTSOURCED INVENTORY ITEMS IN HOUSEPerhaps you’ve been adding those extra embellishments by outsourcing your spindles and moldings. Some specialty moldings cost in excess of $100/ft. Put that money in your own pocket by building your own moldings, spindles, corbels, and inlays.

SAFETYHANDS FREE AND CLEAR FROM ALL CUTTING TOOLSThis item should probably be at the top of the benefits list. Lathes, shapers, table saws, and router tables all require the operator to get up close and personal. Many safety features have been added to these machines in an effort to protect the operator but nothing beats stepping back and letting the CNC system do the job while you are far from the cutting tools. In fact you can leave the room while your CNC system works if you like.

LESS LIFTING AND HANDLINGPanel saws require a lift and twist action to load sheet goods. Table saws require the operator to lift large and heavy sheet goods on and off the table. With today’s CNC system the operator slides materials from the bunk to the machine table with little lifting or twisting. Less back strain, less fatigue, less operator downtime.

LOW RPM SPINDLE PRODUCTIONFew woodworkers think of turning with a CNC routing system but it has many advantages. Unlike the traditional lathe the material rotates slowly while rotary cutting tools remove material and shape the spindle. This low rpm approach prevents spindle whip, and other typical lathe problems and accidents.Another advantage is you can produce any type of spindle from a traditional turning to a complex carved asymmetrical shape like a ball and claw foot. Again without hiring an expensive, highly skilled new employee.

TERMINOLOGYThe CNC world has it’s own language that may seem daunting at first but with a little practice and study you can be speaking CNC like a pro.

Here a are some web links you can follow to learn more about CNC and CAD/CAM software language.

For a brief but thorough explanation of CNC operations and CNC terminology you can visit:

CUSTOMER SERVICERepairsMost repairs can be handled over the phone or with replacement parts. If a product repair or replacement is necessary, the Customer is responsible for all shipping charges, freight, insurance, and proper packaging to prevent breakage or damage in transit.

Technical SupportTechnical support is provided by Legacy via a repair/service ticketing system found on our

website. Our tech support staff will respond to tickets in the order they are received. Repair or service for systems no longer covered by our warranty will be provided at $50.00/hour. Emergency support can be scheduled by sending a complete description of the problem to [email protected].

SafetyOne of the great strengths of CNC equipment is the ability to operate the equipment from a distance. Unlike most woodworking equipment the operators hand

need never be near the cutting tools however automated equipment operators should follow industry safety standards. Wear eye and ear protection and avoid loose fitting clothing. Keep clear of the equipment while it is in operation. Never use hands to hold parts while the machine is in operation. Read and follow the safety guidelines that come with your CNC equipment.Your state may have additional safety standards in place for the operation of automated equipment.

If he determines that his skills fall short of those required to add the embellishments he has in mind he has a choice to make; should he seek more training and education, should he find another woodworker with the right skills and experience and pay him to add the desired embellishment, or should he push imagination aside and settle for the embellishments on his project that do fit within his skill set.

Now, with a CNC, he has a fourth option. Here’s how the CNC technology can bridge the skills gap. A woodworker has a brilliant idea, an idea that will transform his project from average to exceptional. By developing a new skill set, CAD/CAM programming, he is able to write a program that a CNC woodworking system can execute; and his embellishment, whether it’s a carving, inlay, turning, or sculpted form is produced perfectly.

I know, you’re thinking, “If I have to learn another new skill set why don’t I just learn to produce inlay?” The answer is, because after you learn this CAD/CAM skill set you can apply it to any woodworking discipline. The same skill set that allows you to program inlay will also allow you to create carved lettering for a classic wooden sign or plaque. That same skill set can be applied to wrapping a grapevine carving around a kitchen island corner post.

You’re next question has probably something to do with the length of time it will take you to learn this new skill set and is it worth it? What’s wrong with the first three options? Let’s take them one at a time:

CNCM I L L I N GS y s t e m s

Bridging the SKILLS GAP

OPTIONS

Every woodworker faces some sort of skill gap. The skill gap is the space between imagination

and the woodworkers skill set. If the woodworker envisions a plant stand with an inlaid top the first thing he must do is take stock of his inlay skills to

see if he’s up to the job.

Page 19: 2015 - Magnate · PDF fileCNC routers equipped with an automatic tool change system can change tools when required, freeing the operator to work on additional tasks while the CNC system

TAKE A CLASSThe cost of a veneer and inlay class at one of the better woodworking schools is $750.00 for four

days. The same school offers over 100 classes.

Let’s do the math. Assuming you have

unlimited time, 100 four day classes, one per week

to allow for travel time is just less than 2 years of classroom

time. The cost of the classes, $75,000.00. Add travel, food and lodging for 2 years on the road and well I don’t want to even guess at what the total cost of this type of education is.

FIND SOMEONE TO DO THE WORK FOR YOU.While this is a much less expensive alternative to becoming an expert on every aspect of woodworking you’ll still have to find the craftsman with the appropriate skill set, negotiate a price for the work, hope his schedule is compatible with yours, and hope that after you’ve paid a deposit and waited for delivery his skills measures up to your expectations.

OPTIONS THREE, JUST DO WITHOUT.I can only speak for myself, but just do without is not an option I’m willing to live with anymore, not when there is a realistic and affordable alternative.

CNC woodworking systems start at under $5000.00, far less expensive than the school option, and can deliver spectacular results. Even a large commercial CNC system is less expensive than the perpetual school options. If you’re willing to pay a bit more you can add spindle turning and joinery options to your CNC system and you’ll be able to tackle almost any aspect of woodworking.

So how about option 4? Is CAD/CAM difficult to learn? The honest answer is that for you to master every aspect of CAD/CAM would take some time and dedication. The good news is that one of Legacy’s instructors could teach you to make a simple house number sign in less than 30 minutes, a karate trophy plaque in another 30 minutes, and a 3D model that includes trees, elk, and boulders in about 1 hour.

Legacy offers every new CNC owner two days of hands on training at our factory in Springville, Utah. You’ll leave with a sound understanding of machine setup and operations chip-carving, simple turnings using our own CCAM software, and introduce you to 3D modeling and carving.

The second phase of Legacy’s CAD/CAM training program is weekly online classes. Each week at 4PM MST on Tuesdays and Thursdays you can join our online classes that feature a 20 to 30 minute training session followed by 30-40 minutes of questions and answers. Your questions don’t have to stay on the topic of the day. That free time is your opportunity to bring your questions to our experts.

Each class is recorded and posted on our website for future review so if you’re schedule doesn’t allow you to attend the class you can review the class at your leisure when it’s posted. Last year Legacy added over 80 new classes to our online training archive.

In addition to the factory training and weekly live classes, Legacy has also produced many full CNC projects. We’ve found that learning by doing is one of the most effective ways to learn a new skill and these projects will give you valuable CNC shop time that will compliment and add real world experience to your classroom time.

We refer to this two step training system program as “lifetime training” because there is no time on class attendance.

If you are considering CNC now or think it could be part of your future we invite you to check out our training program. Join us in a class, meet our instructors, or please feel free to visit our facility for a test drive.

Andy Anderson, President Legacy Woodworking Machinery

DougPINNEY

Throughout most of my adult working career I owned my own businesses. Prior to retiring in 2009, at the

age of 67, I was a design and build general contractor focusing on commercial building construction. One thing

that made owning my own businesses so rewarding was learning new things and taking on new challenges. So I

knew when I retired I would have to find a way to satisfy my urge for learning. My wife had suggested that I finish up the

wood shop that I had started several years before retiring. I didn’t need much more prompting than that to get everything

rolling forward. I finished my 4000 square foot shop/warehouse and launched into woodworking full time.

Continuing my quest for new knowledge and skills, I started looking into CNC machines in early 2014. I came

across a lot of different machines but in most cases the key machinery was made out of weaker materials from China which didn’t interest me. I started reading through different trade magazines and searching the internet. I also came up with a set of criteria that I wanted in a new machine/company, namely, provide training up front, after market support, components manufactured in the US and stood completely behind their product. One evening I remembered that I saw Legacy Woodworking Machinery (a CNC manufacturer), at the Denver “Wood Show” I attended years earlier. I gave Legacy a call the first thing the next morning and found them to be very helpful with technical information and running different types of software on the machine. After the discussion, I realized they

had met all my criteria. Even though deep down I knew they were the right choice, I spent another month researching a few other possibilities but nothing compared to Legacy. Because I had reached out to them to get information, they had added me to one of their email distribution lists. I received an email one day from Legacy stating that Andy Anderson (owner of Legacy) was going to hold a three day seminar at a high school in Fort Garland, Co. They were more than willing to provide training even though I hadn’t purchased a machine. After attending the seminar, I was convinced that the Legacy was the machine for me and I ordered a Legacy Arty 58 Pro 5-axis machine with a water cooled spindle and Aspire software by Vectric the following week.

Designed for the Legacy Ornamental Mill™, this bit allows you to follow a template when milling a contoured profile. It works on turnings up to 10" in diameter, square turnings up to 5" square or flat stock up to 5" thick. The router follows the template as you make approximately 1/4" deep cuts for 2 to 3 passes and then the bearing will follow the previous cut and support the router bit to eliminate chatter. It can also be used in a traditional router table like a pattern cutting router bit.
