Die ou jaar het warm en droog uitgeloop en so het die nuwe jaar ook begin en kan ons net hoop en

vertrou dat daar gou uitkoms sal wees.

Wat die nuwe jaar se voorgestelde program betref, sal daar weer vier toere (stiptheidsritte) wees wat afgewissel sal word met pretritte, foto-aande, tegniese byeenkomste, ‘n damesaand en besoeke aan lede. Ons twee hoogtepunte op die jaarprogram naamlik Cars in the Park en die Rendezvous-toer pryk ook op ons jaarprogram.

Daar sal weer van die sosiale media gebruik gemaak word om lede aan klub-aktiwiteite te herinner. Die Gaslamp sal steeds op die internet beskikbaar wees, maar sal ‘n gedrukte harde kopie aan lede gestuur, afgehaal of afgelewer word en vertrou ons dat die poswese hul kant sal bring. Kennisgewings van ons algemene jaarvergadering wat vroegtydig gepos is, het

ongelukkig laat of glad nie by lede uitgekom nie en wil ons graag verskoning aanbied. Lede word ook aangemoedig om die webtuiste op die internet te besoek en om ou fotos, interessante berigte, toevoegings tot versamelings, restourasies en dies meer in te stuur.

Welkom aan Fanie van Rensburg en Jimmy McDonald op die nuwe bestuur. Hennie van der Walt en Jan Hugo kry ‘n blaaskans na ‘n lang trek op die bestuur. Dankie aan Hennie wat egter nog die Gaslamp-redaksie sal hanteer en deur René bygestaan word. Jimmy en Ockie Fourie sal as geko-opteerde lede tot die bestuur vir ons behulpsaam wees.

Aan al ons lede wil ek weer eens ‘n vriendelike beroep doen om vanjaar betrokke te wees om sodoende ons stokperdjie te geniet en uit te bou. Dankie dat ek kan staatmaak op ‘n baie bekwame en ervare bestuurspan. Mag elkeen

‘n voorspoedige 2016 ondervind en vertrou ek dat ons as klub ‘n wonderlike jaar sal hê.

2015 SEKRETARIS-TOER

Ons jaarlikse Sekretaris-toer het plaas gevind op Saterdag 14 November 2015. Philip en

Johan het die roete opgemeet en op rekenaar gelaai. Die roete was ‘n distansie uit op die

Jagerfontein-pad en terug na The Willows Gastehuis waar ons bederf is met heerlike skons,

appeltert, tee, koffie en koeldrank.

Agt deelnemers het die hitte trotseer om aan die toer deel te neem en het al die deelnemers

die toer sonder enige tee-spoed voltooi. Die dames het nie kans gesien vir die hitte nie en

was dit hoofaaklik ‘n manne-toer.

Die wenners was Hennie van der Walt en Hannes van der Merwe met ‘n 1960 MGA

1600 met nege-en-dertig strafpunte gevolg deur Theo Potgieter met ‘n 1956

Chevrolet met een-en-sestig strafpunte.

Die res van die deelnemers het net saamgery en hul motors geniet en nie hul tye ingegee

nie. Om alleen en sonder ‘n navigator aan ‘n stiptheids-toer deel te neem kan gevaarlik wees

en is die geleentheid dan daar om net saam te ry.

Die aand is die toer afgesluit met ‘n heerlike bring en braai by die klubhuis en was die

dames toe ook daar.

Pieter, Thea en familie. Tannie Zouna het saam met ons gekuier op 21 November om die Klub se 50ste verjaarsdag te vier, en dit

was ‘n eer om haar by ons te hê.

► Jan Hugo het onlangs vir die kinders in Nieu-Zeeland gaan kuier. Ons kan nie wag om al die stories te hoor nie!

► Pieter en Thea Fonternal het onlangs saam met ons die Klub se 50ste bestaansjaar gevier, en besluit om weer by ons klub aan

te sluit. Welkom terug julle twee—ons sien uit daarna om julle weer by Klubgeleenthede te sien en saam te kuier.

► John Jackson het Tertius du Preez, ‘n lid van die Maluti Antique Auto Club op Bethlehem en Rendezvous deelnemer, se arm

gedraai en oorreed om by ons klub aan te sluit. Baie welkom Tertius, ons sien uit daarna om jou by klubbyeenkomste te sien.

Tertius se versameling bestaan uit ’n 1948 Desoto Special Deluxe Sedan, 1963 Triumph Spitfire 4 Convertible en twee voertuie

onder restourasie, ‘n 1916 Ford Model T Tourabout en ‘n 1956 Ford Prefect 100E Sedan.

► Hennie en Helena van der Walt het in Desember in Europa gaan vakansie hou en ‘n paar motormuseums– en fabrieke

besoek, asook Kersfees in UAE saam met hul seun Chris en sy familie spandeer. Welkom terug!

THE FIRST AUTOMOBILE AIR-CONDITIONER

The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Max, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. On July 17, 1946 , the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees. The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately. The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent. The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, 'The Goldberg Air-Conditioner,' on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed. They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown. And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show -- Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max -- on the controls!

DIE MOTORS WAT IN EISENACH GEBOU IS - Hennie van der Walt

Kort geskiedenis:- 3 Desember 1896 word die fabriek gevestig deur

Heinrich Ehrhart. 17 September 1898 verkry hy ‘n lisensie om

Decauville motors van Frankryk te bou. 3 Mei 1899 word die

motors volledig in Eisenach gebou en op 14 Julie 1899 word die

Decauville herdoop na Wartburg (die kasteel waar Martin Luther

die Bybel in Duits vertaal het, voordat hy die 95 stellings teen die

kerk van Witteberg vasgespyker het). 5 Augustus 1899 word die

eerste motorklub hier gestig.

Augustus word die eerste Dixi gemaak en in 1907 word die eerste Dixi’s na Frankryk (onder die naam Regina-Dixi) en

Engeland (onder die naam Leander) uitgevoer. 1909 word die eerste vliegtuig en lugskip enjins en in 1910 die eerste

bootenjins hier gebou.

1914 Militêre produksie begin, en in 1919

verander die naam van die motors na Centaur.

1927 word die Austin Seven gebou en genoem Dixi 3/15 en in 1928

word produksie oorgeneem deur die Bayerischen Motoren Werke

(BMW). (Foto links)

With its 1.6 litre engine, the Dixi R8 was the first light 4 cylinder vehicle of

the Dixi factories. This car (foto right) has been in possession of the Grand

Duke of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach and is the only still existing car of this

type worldwide.

In 1930 word die eerste BMW sportmodel gebou onder die naam

Wartburg DA3 en op 14 Junie 1938 word die suksesvolle BMW 328 in

Nürnberging bekend gestel (foto links) en met baie motorsport suksesse

bekroon. Produksie van BMW’s staak in Desember 1942 en slegs BMW

R75 motorfietse word vir militêre gebruik gebou.

Due to its performance and excellent driving characteristics, this shapely roadster was by far one of the most popular

and successful sports cars of the pre-war time. Its many victories on international racing tracks proved BMW’s

effective advertising. A secret behind its success was the good power-to-weight ratio of 1250 lb for remarkable 78.9

hp by 2 litre cylinder capacity.

Julie 1944 tot begin 1945 is 65% van die

die oorlog val Eisenach in die Russiese deel

van Duitsland en produksie van die BMW

321 en R35 motorfietse begin. Na die

oorlog word die BMW 340 (foto onder) as

nuwe modelle hier gebou.

The BMW 340 was one of the first post-war German

passenger cars. The front part up to the A-pillar and the

rear section were completely redesigned. So the high

qualities of this touring car with its silent 6 cylinder

in-line engine were optically accentuated.

Eisenach. Alle BMW’s wat onder lisensie hierna gebou word, is genoem EMW met ‘n rooi

kenteken. (regs)

Op 5 Maart 1953 word die IFA F9 (DKW 3 silinder) ook

hier gebou. (foto links)

The DKW F9 was developed by Auto Union Chemnitz at

the end of the 30’s. It was ready to go into serial

production as IFA F9 in Zwickau only after World War II.

The production rate was low before the production had

been displaced to Eisenach. At first the type was not

welcome in Eisenach. The 0.9 litre 3 cylinder two-stroke

engine and front wheel drive didn’t fit in the model

philosophy of the company. Up to then 6 cylinder four-stroke engines and rear axle drive were produced. This

changed in the course of the introduction of various development steps (undivided windscreen and rear screen, fuel

tank in the rear, steering column change, engine changes).

In Maart 1957 is die Wartburg 311 en 313 (foto regs) Sport begin.

The Automobilwerk Eisenach presented a considerably extended

type programme of the Wartburg 311—the Wartburg Sport

313/1. This sports car was also used for hill climbs in a

modification not licensed to the public traffic (open carburetors,

shortened exhaust system and others) The missing sway (“floating

axle”) resulted in a good cornering ability and road holding.

The bodies of the Wartburg 311 showed a great variety at that

time. A good condition for body modifications was the chassis

frame construction of the car. The assembling took place in

the body plants Halle, Meerane and Dresden. The body

variant shown here (photo right) as Camping Limousine from

Dresden is a five door functional car with luxury fittings—a

dream car for many campers and heads of the family. The

majority of these cars were sold abroad.

Hierdie motors word na Suid-Afrika uitgevoer en was

in Bloemfontein verkoop deur Kolbe Motors. (Is daar

enige rekord van hierdie motors wat nog bestaan?)

Vanaf 1962 word die Wartburg 312 en 353 gebou

(later met Volkswagen enjins en tans word Opels in

‘n moderne fabriek in Eisenach gebou.

Die huidige “Automobile Welt Eisenach” is gestig in die ou fabriek en is ‘n belewenis!

THE IRISH NUN

A car full of Irish nuns is sitting at a traffic light in downtown Dublin, when a

bunch of rowdy drunks pull up alongside of them.

"Hey, show us yer teets, ya lotta ole penguins!" shouts one of the drunks.

Quite shocked, Mother Superior turns to Sister Mary Immaculata and says, "I don't

think they know who we are; show them your cross."

Sister Mary Immaculata rolls down her window and shouts, "Piss off, ya fookin'

little wankers, before I come over there and rip yer b_ _ _ s off!"

Sister Mary Immaculata then rolls up her window, looks back at Mother Superior,

quite innocently, and asks, "Did that sound cross enough?
