Ester Rada is a stimulating young singer and songwriter with a unique cross-cultural approach that reflects her Ethiopian heritage and Israeli upbringing, while embracing the influence of American soul icons like Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin. Combining R&B, Ethio-Jazz, reggae and classic funk, Rada’s music is a truly global stew that has earned her critical raves and performances around the world, including an opening tour slot for R&B queen Alicia Keys, who has become one of Rada’s most outspoken champions. Her debut EP, Life Happens, was produced by Israeli tastemakers Sabbo and Kuti, and is a triumphant document of the joy and escape through music that led Rada to transcend her early life on the rough streets of Tel Aviv. For her SFJAZZ debut, Ester Rada will perform music from Life Happens and Ester Rada, her brand new full-length release, weaving a spell of multi-cultural grooves wrapped in sweet soul.

Halifax-based Gypsophilia is a group of seven performers playing original high-energy jazz that is by turns angular, sweet, nostalgic, modern and raucous. In recent years Gypsophilia has become a formidable touring outfit, regularly crisscrossing the continent and playing to sold-out crowds all over Canada and the US. Their killer live shows and danceable, genre-bending sound have made them an audience favourite at major festivals and small clubs alike. With a combination of

serious musicianship, humour and showmanship they are capable of enchanting a sit-down crowd one moment, and whipping people into a dancing, clapping, singing frenzy the next.

2015 sees the release of Night Swimming, their fourth full-length album. Joel Plaskett’s The New Scotland Yard Studio in Dartmouth, NS provided the setting, and Toronto-based producer Joshua Van Tassel (David Myles, Great Lake Swimmers, Amelia Curran) provided the direction, departing from the purely live approach of their previous discs. The result is a hauntingly beautiful 9-song masterpiece that showcases a darker, cinematic side of Gypsophilia alongside their signature ebullient swinging sound.

The four-time ECMA winning band features Gina Burgess on violin; Nick Wilkinson on guitar; Sageev Oore on piano, accordion and keys; Alec Frith and Ross Burns on guitar and percussion; Matt Myer on trumpet and organ; Adam Fine on double bass. Members of Gypsophilia have performed with the likes of Symphony Nova Scotia, Kanye West and more.

Whether receiving props from The Roots on Twitter, jamming with puppets on CBC Kids’ Mamma Yamma, recording with the legendary Giovanni Hidalgo or being championed by influential DJ and tastemaker Gilles Peterson, The Heavyweights Brass Band pack a one-two punch of crossover appeal and respect from music’s elite.

Inspired by the New Orleans brass band tradition, the Heavyweights’ original stance keeps one foot

firmly rooted in the rich legacy of jazz, while one foot steps forward into the future. Like the music’s originators, the Heavyweights are unafraid to incorporate influences from disparate areas of the musical spectrum, from pop hits of the day to original compositions, from R&B and funk throwbacks to the infectious rhythms of Latin America, all woven together with the thread of adventuresome sophistication.

The uppercut ascent of the Heavyweights’ arc has been the result of relentless dedication. Touring across Canada and sharing the stage with such influential groups as The Roots, Trombone Shorty, Galactic and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble has helped build the group a loyal following. Now with their sophomore release Brasstronomical, the Heavyweights are offering a unique sound with emphasis on their original compositions. They delve deeper and more eclectically into each musical direction implied on their first album. Brasstronomical reveals the band’s music is stronger, bolder, funkier and more mature than ever before.

The future is bright for the group, with plans in the works for 2014 to be a year of new thresholds as the group blossoms into even more of a hard-hitting powerhouse of sound.

Montreal based saxophonist, composer and conductor Christine Jensen has been described as an original voice on the international jazz scene, and as one of Canada’s most compelling composers by the Globe and Mail. The two time Juno award winner currently leads her own jazz orchestra as well as diverse small ensemble projects.

“Jensen writes in three dimensions, with a quiet kind of authority that makes the many elements cohere. Wayne Shorter, Maria Schneider and Kenny Wheeler come to mind.” –Downbeat Magazine.

Jensen has won two Juno awards with her jazz orchestra for Treelines in 2011 and Habitat in 2014. Habitat received five stars in Downbeat, along with it being included in several international critic’s polls, including Jazz Album of the Year. “[It] is simply superb, a lyrical, powerful triumph with peak moments that are the stuff of goose bumps and even a bit of teariness.”-The Ottawa Citizen.

Recent coverage of Jensen’s work was profiled on NPR’s All Things Considered with host Arun Roth. She has also topped recent critic’s polls for Album of the Year (CBC, Downbeat, NPR, Ottawa Citizen, JazzTimes) as well as receiving notice in Downbeat’s Critic’s polls for soprano saxophone, composer, and orchestra categories.

Jensen has released three small ensemble recordings between 2000 and 2006 as a leader. Along with her sister, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, she co-leads Nordic Connect, and has released two recordings to international acclaim.

Jensen’s music has taken her all over the world, either as a guest artist or leading her own ensembles, along with receiving numerous commissions and conducting opportunities with jazz orchestras in Canada, the US and Europe. She has held residencies at various universities, including Dartmouth College (US), and MacEwan University (Edmonton). In 2013 she was guest lecturer at Stockholm Conservatory, Malmö Conservatory, and Skjürup School in Sweden. She has collaborated with Ben Monder, Gary Smuylan, Dick Oatts, Geoffrey Keezer, Lenny Pickett, Gary Versace, and Donny McCaslin, and has studied with Kenny Werner, Jim McNeely, Dick Oatts, and John Hollenbeck.

Jensen holds the position of conductor with Orchestre national jazz de Montréal. She teaches composition, saxophone and jazz ensembles at the University of Sherbrooke and McGill University- Schulich School of Music.

Alex Pangman

Tickets available at: Regina Inn, Bach & Beyond & www.jazzfestregina.com

Toronto’s Alex Pangman released her “New”, her 3rd album with Justin Time Records, in November 2014, with album launch events held in Toronto, Montreal and London. The torch and swing singer’s latest album was recorded in New Orleans in March 2014, a mere seven months after Pangman underwent a double lung transplant surgery. “I

kept it private that I was rejecting my first set of lungs, but with this newest transplant I feel amazing, and wanted to get right back to singing, and come clean about my health struggles.”

New being the theme, it represents both a new chance at life, but also a shock of new things. New co-producer Andrew Gilchrist recorded Pangman in New Orleans, using new musicians from the city where jazz was born. “I wanted to test myself as a singer and band leader by taking this record someplace different, physically and sonically. This new session has a slightly different sound scape, no drums, the funky bass saxophone, and an almost entirely new band. I think it’s groovy and very swinging.”

Known for a dozen or so years as Canada’s Sweetheart of Swing, Pangman made sure to include Canadian compositions in this collection of tin pan alley gems. Her original song It’s Never Enough slides in seamlessly beside Canadian classics, I’ll Never Smile Again, and The World Is Waiting For the Sunrise. Her favorite song on the record is Fit As A Fiddle. “Because I am, again.” True to form, not even a year after her most recent transplant, Pangman was on the road again touring major Canadian jazz festivals to prove it.

Audiences will recognize Pangman’s stalwart Canadian band, The Alleycats, at Canadian performances this summer. Supporting Alex will be Peter Hill on piano, Ross Wooldridge on clarinet, Glenn Anderson on drums, and Chris Banks on double bass. Having assembled the band from the Toronto jazz music scene, Pangman learned her craft live on stage with such local luminaries as Chris Whitely, Jim Galloway, and Jeff Healey. Her 2013 album Have a Little Fun featured the singer’s 1930’s style voice with Bucky Pizzarelli, guitarist to Benny Goodman and Frank Sinatra. “That session was fun, and the live broadcast we made tested every skill I had ever learned as a singer and performer. With Bucky’s help, I passed the test!” It seems a lifetime of listening to old records, and hashing out love songs on stage prepped her beautifully for the experience.

Don’t miss hearing songs from Pangman’s newest album!

From the Great Northern Plains of Western Canada, Little Miss Higgins struts and serenades her way, guitar in hand, lips blazoned red, onto any stage. As if she just drove in off the back-road of another time with gravel dust and a sunset trailing behind her, this pocket-sized powerhouse plays music brewed up in old-time country blues sprinkled with a little jazz and maybe a hint of folk. Whetherit’s songs about passion or songs about panties, she writes about real things in a rooted and

poetic way. This is all too true on her most recent award winning album, Across The Plains (2010).Little Miss Higgins (aka Jolene Higgins) was born in Brooks, Alberta, and raised in Independence, Kansas.

Music entered her life early. “When I was about four my dad bought this old piano at a local bar,” she recalls. “It was a mini grand piano. He brought it home and told me it was mine. I carved my name in the side and started taking piano lessons.”

Growing up playing piano, Higgins now uses guitar and voice as her main instruments as well as her theatre background to bring a “refreshing sound and story to the stage.” She spent a number of years after studying theatre at a college in Alberta, roaming Western Canada, acting in plays, frequenting blues clubs and playing her guitar. Higgins finally settled down in Saskatchewan and that’s when music took the driver’s seat.

Her first two studio albums “Cobbler Shop Sessions” (2006) and “Junction City” (2007) superbly showcase Little Miss Higgins as a highly-developed songwriter. The release of “Junction City” resulted in a handful of honours for Little Miss Higgins including JUNO and Maple Blues Awards nominations and won as Outstanding Blues Recording at Western Canadian Music Awards and Favourite Blues Artist/Group or Duo of the Year category of the 8th Annual Indies Awards.

For her newest release, Bison Ranch Recording Sessions, Little Miss Higgins teamed up with a very talented quintet of musicians from Manitoba. She calls them the Winnipeg Five—Jimmie James McKee on trumpet, Eric Lemoine on banjo and pedal steel, Blake Thomson on guitar, Patrick Alexandre Leclerc on upright bass, Evan Friesen on drums and all five of them sing harmonies. As they play music in a similar vein as Higgins, it was a fitting alliance both onstage and in the studio...well, not quite a typical recording studio. With new songs waiting on the sidelines, the six of them decided to record in a barn, a barn on a bison ranch in rural Manitoba.

The Regina Jazz Orchestra (RJO) is in their second year operation. Their inaugural concert was March 20th, 2013 at the Exchange. This band started by the want and need of the musicians of the city that wanted to have the opportunity to play concert jazz repertoire.

The band is a standard instrumentation big band. 5 saxophones, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, bass, piano, and drums. Featured vocalist Jodi Scott.

This follows in the tradition of the Bob Moyer Big Band. Bobs band was the ‘training ground’ where many people in RJO got their start in the playing scene in Regina. Bobs band, although it is a society big band… primarily a dance band did in the 80’s do regular Saturday shows at the old Landmark Inn in the night club Bernsteins. The Bob Moyer Big Band is still performing shows but directed by Brent Ghiglione, with the guidance of Bobs wife and singer Pat Steel.

The musical director of the RJO is Brent Ghiglione. Brent was a member of the Moyer band from 1979 and leads that band today. Brent started his musical career as director of the Regina Police Jr. Bands then Campbell Collegiate Music program from 1989 to 2006. Brent is currently director of bands at the University of Regina.

The band plays a wide variety of music from several different big bands, as well as some original music written from members of the band… and of course Bob Moyer.

The Dead South is a four-piece acoustic ensemble based in Regina, Saskatchewan. With Nate Hilts’ gritty vocals and aggressive guitar strumming, Scott Pringle’s soaring harmonies and mandolin chops, Colton Crawford’s blazing banjo licks and steady kick drum, and Danny Kenyon’s prominent cello melodies, The Dead South blends elements of folk, bluegrass, classical, and rock which results in a unique, modern, and authentic blend of boot-stompin’ acoustic music.

The Dead South has been hard at work since they formed as a band, having played several notable shows, some of which include: showcasing at Reeperbahn Festival 2014, Canadian Music Week 2014, Regina Folk Festival, Ness Creek Music Festival, Gateway Music Festival, Juno Fest 2013 - 2014, Grey Cup Festival 2013 where they opened for Serena Ryder, Saskatchewan Party Premier’s Dinner, The Works Art and Design Festival, All Folk’d Up Festival, Frontier Days Festival, Long Days Night Festival, Picker’s Cup Festival and the Cathedral Village Arts Festival.

On top of playing shows, The Dead South released an EP in June 2013 titled The Ocean Went Mad and We Were to Blame. Following the success of their debut release, The Dead South returned to the studio and recorded their first full-length album, titled Good Company, which was released in April 2014 to a capacity crowd at local venue, The Owl. Shortly after the release of Good Company, The Dead South showcased at Canadian Music Week in Toronto where they caught the attention of Jörg Tresp of Devil Duck Records (based out of Hamburg, Germany). He immediately signed the band, released the album in Europe, and has booked the band for numerous overseas tours.

Since the inception of the band, The Dead South has continually pushed the energy of their live shows, as well as pushed what is possible between four ordinary acoustic instruments. The unique abilities and viewpoints of each band member make The Dead South an impossible band to duplicate, and a fixture of the Regina music scene that will not soon be leaving.

The Dead South is: Danny Kenyon, Colton Crawford, Nate Hilts and Scott Pringle

ABOUT JAZZFESTABOUT JAZZFESTSponsored and operated by the Regina Jazz Society, JazzFest Regina is an annual event intended to introduce the world of Jazz in all its forms to the city’s many residents. Every summer, JazzFest will showcase many up and coming local and Canadian Jazz musicians along with several internationally known and renowned “Headliners”. This multi-day event will give all in Regina an opportunity to see and hear some of the best jazz music available today. JazzFest is made available to Regina only through the work of many volunteers and the support of a number of sponsors to which we are more than grateful. Check out our “Sponsors” and “Volunteers” recognition pages on this site to view those who have helped JazzFest become a success and part of the Regina landscape – we thank you.

HISTORY

2014 is the 6th year of the JazzFest event in Regina. We started slow during the first year but momentum has been increasing at an exciting pace – already for this year we have many musicians wanting to be part of the event – and many more people wanting to help than in years past.

FUTURE PLANS

Our plans are to make JazzFest a week long, cultural event in and throughout Regina. In addition to the outside “Stage” shows we now present, their will be additional performances during this week in the evenings at a number of clubs throughout the city along with opportunities for patrons and supporters of JazzFest and the Jazz Society to socialize with the entertainers at local private gatherings. Our plans for this event as support for it grows, will be to bring in more (quantity) and more top quality artists from throughout Canada and internationally. The more we are supported, the more we can bring to the city.
