A Brief History

Inspired by a Christmas gift in 1961, Jim and Jean Sunderland started manufacturing placemats by hand from Jim’s parents’ laundry in 1962. Featuring iconic New Zealand scenes, the placemats grew in sales and popularity. In 1964 Jim and Jean moved to their first factory in Span Farm, Glendene, and with the aid of distributor H.M Fogarty, saw their placemats sold New Zealand wide. By 1970, the factory was producing 5000 placemats per day, helped by Jim’s engineering know-how.

Export sales to Australia commenced in 1973, and in 1980 Jason moved to a purpose-built factory in Culperry Rd, Glendene. The company experienced rapid growth, and on the back of a tourist boom in Australia, expanded its export markets in Scandinavia, Canada, Europe, and the United States.

Innovation played a significant part in this expansion as Jason launched its highly-acclaimed Designer Collection placemats, leading the world in applying contemporary design themes to placemats as part of the modern lifestyle.

By the mid 1990s, Jason placemats were exported to over 35 countries worldwide as the company diversified into trays, crockery, napery, and giftware as part of its Smashing Concepts range. Half a century on, Jason Products, still headed by the Sunderland family, continues to supply New Zealand and the world with design-led tableware.
