The confluence of two scenic rivers and their reservoirs, the James and the Pipestem, are the perfect way to discover the outdoors and enjoy camping, fishing, biking/hiking and other recreation. Then experience our history with attractions such as Frontier Village, Fort Seward, the World’s Largest

Buffalo monument and a live buffalo herd, featuring a rare albino buffalo.

As the railroad forged a path through an emerging nation, Fort Seward was established to offer protection. A portion of the original site lives on to tell the story of life in the frontier army.

The pioneers who settled this land brought industry, creativity and a new kind of wealth. One of these pioneers was the beloved western author, Louis L’Amour. Many of the places he frequented, such as the public library where Louis first connected with the written word, still exist. Also, the Stutsman County Memorial Museum showcases the way life was as the land was settled.

The bison (commonly referred to as buffalo) roamed what is now the Jamestown area long before it was settled. “The Buffalo City” honors these legendary creatures with a museum dedicated to their importance and a herd featuring white buffalo, held sacred by American Indian tradition.

Travelers who spend any amount of time in Jamestown will likely traverse Mill Hill. The street connects the I-94-U.S. Highway 281 interchange with the downtown area.

The Story of Mill Hill

The name was derived from the Russell Miller Milling Co. flour mill that was an early fixture in the community located at the base of the hill near the James River. The mill was originally water powered, but the flow of the river proved too unreliable and a steam engine replaced the water wheel before 1910.

The mill had a capacity of 250 bushels per day. The flour it produced was marketed under the name “Belle of Jamestown.” The flour was so popular the mill expanded to a 24-hour operation in the 1920s with more than 40 men working in the grain elevator and mill.

Competition from the bigger Minneapolis flour mills caused the Jamestown flour mill to close in 1924. In 1933, the timbers and beams from the mill and associated buildings were used in some of the Works Progress Administration construction jobs in Jamestown including an auditorium in McElroy Park and the outfield fence at Jamestown’s baseball stadium.

Mill Hill also served another purpose in Jamestown history.

By 1909, a ski jump was constructed on the slope. It attracted adventurous amateurs as well as touring professionals who put on expeditions.

The mill and ski jump are gone but the hill remains. It’s not an obstacle to travel but a reminder of some of the things important to the history of Jamestown.

In the late 1920s, the James River Basin area was first studied for flood control and recreation. The Flood Control Act of December 22, 1944, secured this area for development and construction began in 1952.

As I-94 forged a path through North Dakota, Jamestown leaders recognized an opportunity to make Jamestown stand out on this new road. Construction for the World’s Largest Buffalo monument began in 1959.

Pipestem Creek Trail8 miles or 3 miles for the outside loopDon’t let the overview of this trail fool you, in the heart of the course is a heart-pumping climb and descent with challenging kick turns and jumps along the route. Be prepared for a fun and exhilarating experience.

White Cloud Trail10 milesNamed after our beloved sacred white buffalo, the White Cloud Trail follows the pasture edge where she roams in the summer. The course begins at McElroy Park and follows the James River. The trail climbs out of the wooded river bottom to the open and vast North Dakota Prairie.

North Ridge Trail5 milesThis entry level difficulty trail is perfect for the family to enjoy time together. The trail stretches 5 miles in one direction providing peaceful views of the natural beauty of Pipestem Lake.

Split Rock Trail1.8 milesBelow the paved walking path along the east side of the Jamestown Reservoir you’ll find this hidden trail. Great for an early morning run and an evening hike with the family, the diversity of this trail has something for everyone.

Overlook Trail5 milesContinue north from the Split Rock Trail onto the Overlook. This 5-mile looped stretch provides a workout as the trails climb up and down the scenic bluffs overlooking the Jamestown Reservoir.

When the weather is warm, you can golf, play disc golf, swim, throw a few horseshoes, skateboard or check out the geocache treasures in the area. Have a canine companion? Pepper’s Dog Park is here for you and your dog.

Birding Drives Dakota

This group of community volunteers coordinates the 300 miles of signed drives and hosts an annual birding festival in

Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge Complex

Chase Lake and Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuges, Valley City Wildlife Management District and Arrowwood Wildlife Management District provide 75,000 acres of venue for birding. Chase Lake is home to one of the largest American While Pelican nesting colonies in North America. The Arrowwood Refuge Headquarters provides a number of visitor services including a visitors center, a 5 ½-mile auto tour, view blinds for the dancing of the sharp tailed grouse in early May, as well as several nature and hiking trails.

Birding

Between the communities of Jamestown and Carrington lies the Prairie and Pothole Region. Volunteers from Birding Drives Dakota and the Friends of the Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge have made it easy to go where the birds are! Six birding drives will take you to remote hotspots amid sweeping grasslands, rolling woodlands, wooded draws and diverse marshlands.

Jamestown’s area economy is booming, with a diverse base of agriculture and manufacturing businesses.

Agriculture plays a major role in the economy of Jamestown and Stutsman County. In 2014, CHS announced its plans to build a $3 billion fertilizer plant in nearby Spiritwood. In the Spiritwood Energy Park Association industrial park east of Jamestown the Dakota Spirit AgEnergy ethanol plant is expected to begin full operations in June. Next to the ethanol plant is the Spiritwood Station, a coal-fired steam and electric generating plant, operated by Great River Energy, which went online in 2014.

Corn and soybeans are major crops grown, along with some wheat, oats, barley and other small grains. Livestock is also produced especially in western Stutsman County.

Jamestown’s economy also includes a number of manufacturing businesses. These industries produce components for the aerospace industry, farm and industrial equipment, malt for beer production and french fries, to name just a few products.

World’s Largest Buffalo, National Buffalo Museum & Frontier Village

When early Jamestown settlers arrived in North Dakota, thundering herds of magnificent bison stampeded across windswept prairies and grazed wide-open grasslands.

Even to this day, visitors can get a glimpse of these wondrous beasts, which are held sacred by American Indian tradition. Preserving its heritage as the “Buffalo City,” Jamestown pays homage to the bison with museums, larger-than-life monuments and live herds roaming in pastures.

To explore Jamestown’s fascinating history, take a trip to Frontier Village, an old-time settlement of original pioneer buildings relocated from around the Great Plains and filled with historical artifacts. An exciting, family-friendly destination, Frontier Village offers stagecoach and pony rides, exhilarating Wild West shoot-outs and gift shops featuring North Dakota products and handmade goods by local artisans—not to mention several important bison attractions.

In the National Buffalo Museum, visitors can discover the vital role bison played for early plains settlers while learning about history dating back to prehistoric times. Just outside the museum, you’ll find a live bison herd roaming the pastures. An important member of the herd is White Cloud, the only certified true albino bison in the world. She has birthed 11 calves as of spring 2014, including Dakota Miracle, a white buffalo. Each year, thousands of visitors come to this area to spot these rare, majestic creatures grazing the grasslands.

For the ultimate photo op, make sure to visit Dakota Thunder, the World’s Largest Buffalo monument, located just outside Frontier Village. The town’s claim to fame, this 60-ton cement statue stands 25 feet tall, welcoming visitors to Jamestown since 1959.

Boyhood Home of Louis L’Amour

Louis Dearborn LaMoore was born in Jamestown on March 22, 1908, as the seventh child of Dr. Louis Charles LaMoore and Emily Dearborn LaMoore. His father was a large-animal veterinarian, local politician and farm-equipment broker who had arrived in Dakota Territory in 1882.

One might suggest L’Amour first encountered cowboys as they traveled through Jamestown with their livestock on their way to or from ranches in Montana. He spent much of his free time at the local library reading and on the school grounds of the Franklin School. At the age of 16 the family left the area after a series of bank failures that devastated the economy and began the wandering years that defined L’Amour.

Fort Seward

603 10th Ave. NW701-251-1875Jamestown’s Fort Seward existed from June 3, 1872, to September 30, 1877. It was during this time the Northern Pacific Railroad was being built that this facility served as protection for 500 railroad workers. President Ulysses S. Grant drafted orders for military presence to ensure no crews would come into harm. When the fort was abandoned, it was dismantled and transport to Fort Totten, 81 miles north of Jamestown.

An interpretive center has been established to recount the historical significance of this site. While there is no report of any hostile encounter for the short history of this site, the interpretive center provides detailed accounts of the life of the soldiers and existence. From their simple housing to the gardens from the rich prairie that provided their nourishment, learn about these men and their work to bring the east west.

Stutsman County Memorial Museum

321 3rd Ave. SE701-252-6741The Stutsman County Memorial Museum is housed in the historic Lutz Mansion. George Lutz arrived in Jamestown in 1882, an immigrant from the Black Forest region in Germany. He was a local lumber dealer and by the turn of the century had lumber yards in Jamestown and four surrounding communities. By 1890 he was a well-respected leader and was elected to the first North Dakota Legislature. In 1907 he built the beautiful craftsman-style home for his family. The detail and materials are exquisite, featuring many stained glass windows and bas relief designs in the plaster of most rooms. Beginning in the 1930s the mansion was used as a home for the aged until 1965 when it became a museum dedicated to the story of the region. The four floors of the pioneer home have a treasury of memorabilia reflecting the culture and life of the early pioneers.

In 2013, the museum added a two-story gazebo to the grounds of the museum. This gazebo is a full-sized replica of a structure built in 1883 to receive former president Ulysses S. Grant who was on his way to Cold Creek, Montana, to participate in the “Golden Spike Celebration” by the Northern Pacific Railroad. Grant stopped in Jamestown to address the crowd and vowed to sit in the gazebo until he had met with every Civil War veteran in the city.

The museum is handicapped accessible and is free to the public. Donations are gratefully accepted.

St. James Basilica

The current St. James Basilica is a stunning example of an American Gothic-style church. The beautiful stained glass windows include the depictions of the joyful mysteries of the Holy Rosary, the glorious mysteries of the Holy Rosary and the historic occasions for the church building.

In 1989, St. James was elevated as a Minor Basilica and was the 24th church in the United States to receive this distinction. The Apostolic Brief, which raised the Church of St. James to Minor Basilica, can be viewed at the southwest entrance of the building.

About Jamestown

According to 2010 census data, the average Jamestown citizen most likely has German or Norwegian ancestry. Food is very important to these cultures with knoephla soup and kuchen featured in some restaurants, and lefse and lutefisk served at some church suppers each year.

The population of Jamestown was 15,427 in 2010, making it the eighth most populated city in North Dakota at that time.

The population of Jamestown is somewhat younger than other parts of the state. The average age of a Jamestown citizen is 39.9 years old. The largest age demographic in the city is 20- to 24-year-olds, 8.8 percent of the city’s population, which may be due in part to the bustling

University of Jamestown. As of February 2015, 886 students were studying at the university.

The next largest age group is 50- to 54-year-olds at 7.6 percent; 45- to 49-year-olds and 55- to 59-year-olds both tied at 6.9 percent each.

The Midland Continental was a short line railroad that operated between 1912 and 1970. Originally intended to be a north-south transcontinental line linking grain markets from Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Galveston, Texas, all that was ultimately constructed was 77 miles of track between Wimbledon and Edgeley, ND. The main floor of the building served as the depot, and this floor showcases the railroad’s history.

Peggy Lee (1920-2002) was an American jazz, and popular music singer, songwriter and actress who lived and worked in this very depot from 1934 to 1937. In 1934, Marvin Egstrom became the depot agent and moved in with his family. His daughter, Norma Deloris Egstrom, better known as Peggy Lee, helped him run it. The large living room upstairs in the depot is dedicated entirely to Peggy Lee’s life, career and music.

This historic site consists of two sites telling the story of the Cold War years in North Dakota. They are the Oscar-Zero Missile Alert Facility and the November-33 Launch Facility. They are the last remnants of the 321st Missile Wing, a cluster of intercontinental ballistic missile launch sites that were spread over a 6,500-square-mile area around the Grand Forks Air Force Base. These facilities played an integral part in the Cold War.

At the Oscar-Zero Missile Alert Facility, take a guided tour down the elevator shaft to the underground Launch Control Equipment Building and Launch Control Center, to see firsthand the front lines of the United States’ strategy of nuclear deterrence. Step behind the concrete blast door and witness the equipment that could have been used by the missile crews to launch nuclear missiles.

At November-33, see the topside of a launch facility, including the massive launch closure door which once protected a missile, an imposing security fence, the electronic security system and the ventilation systems that served the underground equipment buildings.

This reconstructed Medicine Wheel’s large circle measures 213 feet around. The 28 spokes radiating from its center represent the number of days in the lunar cycle. Six spokes extending well beyond the Wheel are aligned to the horizon positions of sunrises and sunsets on the first days of the four seasons. The park’s Medicine Wheel is a multicultural symbol celebrating the calendar discovery process by our intelligent human ancestors

On September 3, 1863, General Alfred Sully’s troops attacked a tipi camp of Yanktonai, some Dakota, Hunkpapa Lakota and Blackfeet (Sihasapa Lakota) as part of a military mission to punish participants of the Dakota Conflict of 1862.
