Transcript of 2015 Evening of Hope Event Program
But it’s not going to come from wishes. Or from a lucky star. The cure for ALS can only come from research. And research only comes from funding. Your participation in the Evening of Hope helps provide that crucial funding. It’s also a sign that you’re as determined as we are to unlock one of our most challenging mysteries.
I l l u s t rat io n by HYESU LEE
Dear FriendsWelcome to the 22nd ALS Evening of Hope, A Night to Remember.
We plan on a memorable evening but also want to remember that
since its inception in 1992, this event has raised more than $3.5
million for ALS research. Jeff Kaufman would be very proud of the
legacy he launched 22 years ago. The last year has brought ALS
unprecedented exposure via the Ice Bucket Challenge. We hope
this momentum will continue to keep ALS in the national spotlight.
On a more local note, we wish to warmly acknowledge Green Bay
Packers special safeties coach Darren Perry and player Morgan
Burnett. Coach Perry experienced the heartache of ALS when a
friend’s 33-year-old son was diagnosed. Wanting a liaison between
the ALS Association and the Packers, Coach Perry chose Morgan,
a player with heart, determination and a willingness to lend his
voice to the cause. Morgan solidified this alliance when he met his
“brother” and fellow safety, Steve Gleason, in New Orleans.
Finally, I would like to welcome Barb Newhouse, The ALS
Association’s President. Her leadership and vision have been
instrumental in moving ALS to the forefront of the national health
agenda.
As always, we thank each and every one of you—attendees,
sponsors, donors and volunteers. Your support makes this a night
to remember and continues to give hope to all who live with ALS.
Sincerely,
Melanie Roach-BekosExecutive Director

HOW DOES THE CHAPTER DECIDE HOW TO SPEND FUNDS RAISED AT THE EVENING OF HOPE?The Wisconsin Chapter’s Board of Directors selects research projects to be funded by proceeds of the Evening of Hope from grants submitted to, reviewed and approved by The ALS Association’s Scientific Review Committee, Research Committee and Board of Trustees. The Board receives substantial assistance from its long-standing relationship with Robert V. Abendroth, a current member of ALS Association’s Research Committee and former member of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Abendroth personally identifies and forwards to the Board research projects he believes meet the Chapter’s interest in funding cutting-edge research. Mr. Abendroth was instrumental in securing ALS Association approval of the Jeff Kaufman Project in an unprecedented period of less than eight weeks, allowing the Chapter to announce the funding of that study at the 2008 Evening of Hope.
In the last twenty-two years, proceeds from the Evening of Hope have funded cutting-edge research projects in Wisconsin and across the country. Following are some of the projects the Chapter funded most recently:

Who could ever forget our 2013 Evening of Hope Guest of Honor Steve Gleason? Gleason is a 37-year-old Spokane native and former NFL safety. He played for the Indianapolis Colts before he landed in New Orleans, where he’s considered a hero because of the Falcons punt he blocked in the first post-Katrina game in 2006. In July 2013, “Rebirth,” a statue depicting Gleason blocking the punt, was erected outside the Superdome. A news report commented that the blocked punt “etched Steve Gleason into Saints lore and became symbolic of New Orleans resilience in the face of disaster.”
Tonight, Steve is etched into our hearts as he leads the fight against ALS. His message of “No White Flags” is heard worldwide. Take home this professionally framed and autographed Steve Gleason jersey, and you’ll take home a piece of history.

This one is pure gold. This male golden retriever puppy born on December 4, 2014 has nothing on Marley. We hope you saw him, because seeing is believing.
He is crate trained and in obedience training. He is very calm, easily taught and loves kids. He is AKC registered with full rights, and comes with a guarantee on his hips, elbows, eyes, heart, thyroid, EIC and PRA, all genetic defects of the breed, until he is thirty months of age.
It’s a dog-eat-dog world, but this puppy will bring out anyone’s warm and fuzzy side. Bid high for this best friend.

No. 12 is No. 1 in the eyes of Packers fans across the country. Be the envy of Packer Nation when you’re the high bidder on this framed Green Bay Packers Jersey, autographed by 2011 and 2015 NFL MVP, our very own Aaron Rodgers.
Here are some quick stats: Rodgers threw for 38 touchdowns and a league-low five interceptions; he has thrown 512 passes at home without a pick. He led the Packers to two victories at season’s end despite playing with a severe calf injury.
All of that and more make this jersey an absolute must-have for any sports fan. It would make a great gift, but you’ll want to keep it for yourself.
