Teaching your child to read is one of the highlights of home education. But how can you know when your child is ready for this important step? How should you proceed once he is ready? CLEs early education program can help you answer these questions.

Beginning with the Beginners Activity Series, your 3- to 4-year-old can enjoy short periods of pre-reading activities a few times per week. As he matures, the frequency and duration of these lessons can gradually increase.

When you sense that your child is ready to begin studying phonics (typi-cally between age 5 and 6) you have two options for teaching him kindergarten: CLEs Kindergarten II Little Light series, and the ABC & GHI Readiness series.

Kindergarten II specifically prepares students for CLEs Learning to Read program, so we suggest that you use the ABC & GHI Series to supplement CLEs Kindergarten II if you want more than the thirty lessons in the K II course, or to meet your childs specific needs.

Learning to Read, designed to be taught in Grade 1, may be started at the

end of kindergarten. The Learning to Read and the Reading to Learn courses provide one year of work, so they need not be started before Grade 1.

By carefully observing your childs progress, you can tailor his education in such a way that you will neither push him into formal education too early nor postpone his schooling when he is ready.

Signs that your child may be ready to begin schooling:

    Expresses interest in schooling

Likes to draw, color, or scribble

Respects your authority Follows directions well Likes to be read to for

    increasing time periods

    Has a growing attention span

The goal of CLE Kindergarten II is introduction to sounds and numbers, but not necessarily mastery. Workbooks and Activity Books are to be done simultaneouslya lesson from each per day. In the beginning, students may find an entire lesson per day too overwhelming.

LittleLight WorkbooksThe five Workbooks prepare students to use CLE's Learning to Read program. The LittleLights introduce the concepts of matching, dot-to-dot, color names, sounds, letter writing, recognizing and writing numbers 1-100, and more.

Prepares children for Learning to Read.

Creating a positive atmosphere of learning

Keep lessons relaxed and informal in the early years

Read to your child often (while cuddled on the couch)

Let him make a mess while working, then help clean it up

Have lessons when hes most alert (probably right after breakfast)

Allow time for creative play Watch for physical discomfort

(small legs dangling from a large chair can lose circulation)

Be sensitive to the child who has a short attention span

Dont pressure your child to meet the expectations of others

Learning to Read, CLEs widely-used, phonics-first reading program, is a comprehensive program introducing the beginning first grader to the basics of language arts. The lessons cover visual discrimination, listening, handwriting, phonics, spelling, and reading. Other subjects for first grade are coordinated with Learning to Read and are begun before its completion. This ties the first-grade curriculum together and provides a solid founda-tion that helps the child develop good work habits for independent study.

    LightUnitsTen LightUnits (workbooks) provide

a variety of activitiespictures to color, writing practice, drilling of likenesses and differences, and pictures to identify the beginning sound or vowel sound. There are also words to sound and stories to read.

After the 35 basic sounds have been introduced, the lessons generally include a two-page story with questions to answer, a writing page, and a phonics page. The phonics page continues drillsounding out words, marking vowelsas well as introducing more advanced concepts.

Flash CardsA letter card, story, and rhyme are used to

introduce 21 consonants, four consonant digraphs, and the long and short vowel sounds. Each card contains a full-color picture whose name uses the sound of the letter. The story and rhyme are centered around the key word picture and often contain many words with the new sound. Students learn the rhyme and repeat it frequently to help rivet the sound in their minds. The story also contains a moral or draws the childs mind to the greatness of Gods creation or Gods care for him. Students develop listening comprehension by answering questions about the story.

Word and phrase flashcards are an integral part of the program. Word cards improve word recognition speed. Phrase cards develop the skill of reading sentences quickly. Words and phrases are also listed in the back of the Teachers Guide.

Language ArtsLightUnitsCLEs Language Arts program is built on two key concepts: incremental learning and continuous review. The incremental approach to teaching concepts builds line upon line, precept upon precept as each small segment builds on what has already been taught. A new concept is reviewed oftenseveral times before being tested, and at regular intervals thereafterto insure that students remember it.

Phonics: teaches most phonics sounds and spellingsSpelling: phonics review, word meaningsGrammar: nouns, describing words, suffixes, prefixesPenmanship: all manuscript lettersCreative Writing: thinking, writing, sharingCommunication Skills: telephone, mannersMechanics: capitals, periods, question marks, commas

  • Juneau, WI:We were very concerned

about being able to teach our youngest child to read, because she had no desire to read. In fact, as she stated one day last year, I hate reading! ... We decided to try the CLE workbooks. After completing the Learning to Read series, our daughter has become a successful reader, and her attitude has improved immensely. She is happily completing all of her work in all subject areas.

Toledo, OH:Two things I greatly appreciate

are 1) Cost. I can hardly believe anything so reasonable could be more effective than the Bells and Whistles courses. 2) Religious content . . . Other courses Ive heard of or reviewed with a religious affiliation teach beliefs contrary to my sons religious training. Your materials show such simple truths and would be helpful in any religious faith of leading little ones to the Lord. I like the low key, simple way its doneits not preachy or offensive.

Pretty Prairie, Ks:I started my son

on your Learning to Read 101, and he has progressed grandly. Your systematic approach with lots of drill work and repetition has been the key to his understanding and therefore, retaining the information.
