Letter from Dr. Scopelliti
Dear Donors and Friends,
I am pleased to provide your annual report for 2015, featuring stories that highlight the generosity of community members, trustees and employees who are making a difference at Guthrie. Guthrie is proud of its long legacy of delivering excellent clinical care to patients across the region. With your support, we are fulfilling our mission to improve the health and well being of our patients and the communities we serve.
We achieved a great deal in 2015. For example, on April 1, Towanda Memorial Hospital began its integration into Guthrie. As the fourth hospital to join our system, Guthrie Towanda Memorial Hospital will continue to provide quality care, in the heart of our rural community.
In May, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) awarded Guthrie Level 3 recognition for its Patient Centered Medical Homes (PCMH) across all 25 of our primary care locations, the highest level of recognition. PCMH takes a team-based approach to care, with the goal of preventing illness and injury, and managing chronic disease to avoid complications.
In July, Guthrie and The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) signed an educational partnership agreement, making Guthrie a clinical education site for TCMC’s students. This relationship not only furthers Guthrie’s goals around enhancing clinical excellence in medicine, but it also provides local medical students with an opportunity to work in our region, and possibly one day choose to practice here.
In November, for the tenth time, Truven Health Analytics named Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals. This distinction represents the consistent dedication and high level of care offered by our Cardiac and Vascular teams, of whom we are truly proud.
Finally, on November 17, Guthrie was welcomed as the 36th member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. Guthrie was the first organization in Pennsylvania and New York to be invited to join this national network that offers our physicians the benefit of collaboration with Mayo Clinic specialists, and helps our patients receive the care they need, close to home.
Through contributions such as yours, Guthrie has built new facilities, helped to educate the physicians and nurses of the future, and provided our patients with the care and resources they need, at often the most challenging time of their lives. Our goal is to be here for the communities we serve and provide needed support in as many circumstances as we possibly can.
On behalf of the entire Guthrie organization, thank you for this crucial support. Because of you, Guthrie is able to continue its tradition of serving the health care needs of our communities each and every day.
Joseph A. Scopelliti, MD President and CEO Guthrie

2015 DONOR RECOGNITION REPORT
Dr. Bruce Boselli devoted nearly all of his medical career to Guthrie. He joined the Guthrie Clinic in 1964, and a year later he founded the Hematology and Oncology Department, serving as its head until his retirement in 1992.
In the broader community, Boselli was an ardent anti-cancer activist, often going into schools to talk with students about the link between smoking and cancer, says his daughter, Kathy Vizas. And at work, he showed a deep commitment not only to his patients, but to the nurses he worked with, as well.
“He believed nurses were a crucial part of good patient care,” Vizas says. Boselli encouraged the cancer nurses who worked with him to earn advanced certifications, and he helped them in those efforts. “He treated them with respect. He realized it was important to empower them and make them feel that they were important parts of the team.”
Boselli died in November 2015. To keep his memory alive and honor his years of dedication, his family decided to establish the Dr. Bruce Boselli Compassionate Nursing Care Memorial Fund. This fund will provide financial support to nurses and other caregivers at the Robert Packer Hospital Intensive Care Unit and the Guthrie Cancer Center in Sayre, Pa., to help them with continuing education.
Money from the fund could help a nurse attend a conference or pursue a BSN or MSN degree, says Cheryl Meyer, MSN, RN, CCRN, Guthrie’s director of nursing education and research. “Or it could help a nurse become certified in his or her field of specialization.”
Members of Dr. Boselli’s family hope that the fund will provide opportunities to nurses who could not otherwise advance their education, Vizas says. “And we want to keep the memory of my father alive,” she adds. “Because Guthrie was a place that meant so much to him, it makes sense that he should be a part of the ongoing life of the medical center.”

Distribution of Grants
Josh Palmer and his family founded the Josh Palmer Fund to lend financial and emotional support to local cancer patients and their families. At Guthrie, in 2015, grants from the Fund were distributed to pay for the basic needs of patients as shown above.
![Page 11: 2015 Donor Report - GuthrieI am pleased to provide your annual report for 2015, featuring stories that highlight the generosity of community members, trustees and employees who are](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042107/5e8617cda9265350994dd9bd/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Josh Palmer was only 19 when he learned about the worries—medical and otherwise—that weigh on cancer patients. Palmer was undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s disease, but his family was lucky: his parents had jobs and health insurance. They didn’t need outside financial help. “But we noticed that there were a significant number of people in our community who did need help,” he says.
So Palmer and his family founded the Josh Palmer Fund to lend financial and emotional support to local cancer patients and their families.
Starting with a basketball tournament in 1999, the Elmira-based fund has raised more than $1 million. Each year, it grants funding support to local organizations such as 2015 recipients Guthrie, Falck Cancer Center at Arnot Health and CareFirst . Those institutions distribute the money throughout the year to cancer patients and their families, to cover a variety of expenses that are hard to manage while fighting a serious illness.
“We offset the costs of medication that might not be covered by insurance, or we help with high copays,” Palmer says. “We have helped with mortgage payments, rent, gas and electric, insurance premiums, car payments and a variety of other expenses.”
Many organizations raise money for the essential work of cancer research, Palmer says. “At the same time, maybe because my mother is a nurse, we saw things from the perspective of the patients and their more immediate needs.” That’s why, when Palmer decided to join the fight against cancer, he chose to focus on lifting the financial burden that often comes with a cancer diagnosis.
“That also helps the mental burden,” Palmer points out. “If you don’t have to worry about paying your bills for a month, obviously that provides a significant amount of relief.”

Garrett Hoover was named president and COO of Guthrie Corning Hospital in July, 2015. Hoover replaced Shirley Magana, who retired on July 1. Formerly president and CEO of Nason Hospital in Roaring Spring, Pa., Hoover has spent much of his career leading strategies to improve patient satisfaction, increase employee engagement and spur cultural transformation.
Bert Robles joined Guthrie in 2015 as executive vice president, chief information officer (CIO). Robles has more than 30 years of management experience in health care and information technology. He previously served as senior vice president and corporate CIO at the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation, and as CIO of the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. In his new role, he will oversee the strategic goals, policies and procedures of Guthrie’s information technology division, with the mission of delivering excellence in health care through information, technology and innovation.
Staci Covey, RN, MSN, became the new president of Guthrie Towanda Memorial Hospital in September, 2015, replacing Bill Rohrbach. Covey also remains president of Guthrie Troy Community Hospital and senior vice president of post-acute care. She has worked for Guthrie for 36 years, previously serving as a staff RN and educator at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital and as administrator of the Guthrie Home Care division.

Dr. Mark Bristol received the Robert E. Cohen Professionalism Award. He is pictured here with Dr. Cohen, for whom the award is named.

Annual Award Puts the Human Side of Medicine Front and CenterIn world’s eyes, the “rock star” physicians are the ones who gain financial success or big major breakthroughs in treatment, says Dr. Robert Cohen. “Sometimes the real basis of our profession—‘Do no harm’ and ‘The patient comes first’—gets lost.” But in medicine, he says, it’s vital to focus on human values.
That’s why Cohen, an orthopedic surgeon at Guthrie who retired in 2011, agreed to lend his name to an annual award that honors a medical resident or fellow who embodies traits such as empathy, ethics, collegiality and devotion to serving the needs of all patients. Guthrie has been making the Robert E. Cohen Professionalism Award since 2012.
Colleagues, nurses, administrative staff, attending physicians—anyone who works with residents and fellows at Guthrie—can make nominations for the award. The nominee who best demonstrates the qualities of professionalism modeled by Dr. Cohen throughout his career at Guthrie receives the award.
Individuals who win the award have taken on exceptional responsibility and gone out of their way to help patients, Cohen says. “These are people who have worked extra hours in the clinic or have helped patients and their families. They’ve been especially compassionate and developed an excellent bedside manner.”
For Dr. Mark Bristol, the most recent award recipient, the honor came as a surprise and an affirmation, recognizing the extra effort physicians put into excellent patient care.
“The award lets us know that we’re doing the right things, and that someone is noticing,” says Bristol, a second-year resident in general surgery. “Not that we need someone to notice, but it’s nice to have that.”
Although the award salutes Bristol as an outstanding medical professional, he didn’t achieve that status on his own, he says: he’s had some terrific role models. “Our mentors—our attendings—portray the same characteristics. Following them over the time I’ve been at Guthrie is what put me in place to receive this award.”

2015 DONOR RECOGNITION REPORT
A note to our Guthrie Towanda Memorial Hospital donors: If your name has been omitted or misprinted, please accept our sincere apologies and notify the office of Resource Development at 570-887-4420 or [email protected]. With the printing of the next donor report, your giving will be incorporated into the Lifetime Contributors, Hall of Heritage and Annual Donors sections of the report. For those who previously donated to both Guthrie and the former Memorial Hospital of Towanda, those giving histories will be combined into one shared record.

Cash Gifts
Cash is the simplest form of gift to make. Donors frequently make cash gifts to meet areas of immediate need, to memorialize or honor individuals or to participate in Guthrie’s campaigns.
Capital Gifts
Donors often use capital gifts to support facility-related projects, major equipment purchases or endowments. Capital and other major gifts may provide naming opportunities.
Stocks, Bonds, and Other Securities
Donors who give stocks, bonds or other securities may see deductions in their income taxes and also may avoid capital gains taxes.
Real Estate
This may involve the gift of a home, farm or other real property to Guthrie.
Retirement Plan Designation
You can name Guthrie as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401K or other qualified plans, working with your plan administrator to designate all or part of the balance.
Life Insurance
You may use an existing or new life insurance policy as a charitable gift. Contact your life insurance company to designate Guthrie as beneficiary.
Trusts and Charitable Gift Annuities
There are many types of trusts, including charitable lead trusts, charitable remainder trusts and living trusts, as well as charitable gift annuities. A trust or charitable gift annuity provides opportunities for both an income tax reduction and an income stream for the donor.
Bequests and Wills
You can name Guthrie in your will to receive money, property, securities or other items.
There are many ways to make a donation to Guthrie, some of which are listed below. For more information about methods of giving, please call Guthrie’s Resource Development department at 570-887-4420, or visit us at www.GuthrieGiving.org. We recommend that you consult your tax adviser before making a gift that has income or estate tax implications.

Donors play a crucial role in the entire Guthrie organization. Thanks to their gifts, we can continue to provide excellence in health care to all those we serve. We take great pride in recognizing donors who support Guthrie entities, departments, projects, events and specific funds. The names of those individuals and organizations appear in our Donor Report and on Guthrie’s system-wide donor wall. Honors are showcased by category levels, which include: Lifetime, Hall of Heritage (Estates, Endowments & Trusts), Annual and Physician donors.
Guthrie is proud to recognize donors on 32-inch touch screens found in three regional locations: near the Gift Shop in the Atrium Concourse on Guthrie’s Sayre Campus, near the Cafeteria in the Education Concourse at Guthrie Corning Hospital, and in the Main Concourse of Guthrie Troy Community Hospital. The displays show gifts in all category levels, and visitors can also search by individual names.
The wall also provides additional information, such as stories illustrating how we put donors’ gifts to work, announcements of major events and post-campaign updates.
We invite you to stop by and see this impressive display the next time you visit Guthrie’s Sayre Campus.
