Unfortunately, neither condition applies at our house. We did have a lot of fun over the Thanksgiving holiday, though, between family visits and great music. 2016 will be HTMA’s FIFTIETH year as an organization, albeit under a few different names. I think we started out as the Huntsville Association of Folk Musicians, and at some point transformed that into the Tennessee Valley Association of Folk, Old Time, and Traditional Musicians. Shortly after I joined up our name was changed to the Huntsville Traditional Music Association. That name appears to have stuck, and is the one we were incorporated under. I like the HTMA moniker a little better than the previous two, mainly because those first two appellations gave the impression that the organization might only be open to musicians, as opposed to musical beginners or even just fans who don’t aspire to ever play any instrument or sing. At age fifty, the association has lasted longer than many, but the overall feeling I get is that our association may be somewhat infirm of late. I would not say that the average age of members has increased one year per year since 1966, but it’s clear that we have not drawn many younger music fans into our fold for some time. The scarcity of young and vibrant members is limiting our operations in several respects. One area where we are not doing so well, as I noted in my column last month, is in our coffeehouse production team. A few faithful volunteers, notably George Williams, Bob Hicks, and Ken Winchester, have been carrying on the production work for some time, but at present we are stretched too thin to keep up the series. As a result, the HTMA coffeehouse will be taking a vacation for 2016. I will happily support a restart as soon as we have a few smiling faces lined up to assist with booking and production of a new series. For now, though, there does not appear to be sufficient member interest in either working production or playing in our coffeehouses to make it practical to continue next year. Dear Friends,

I hope that by the time you read this you are all caught up with Christmas

We have a similar shortfall in volunteer support for the HTMA

newsletter. Jeri‐Ann Payne has been a wonderful newsletter editor for

the past three years, but family issues are requiring Jeri‐Ann to focus her

attention elsewhere for now, and no one has stood up as a replacement

editor. My current plan is to write periodic newsletter updates as I

receive content from members, perhaps quarterly. I’m not able to take

on the editor job for monthly publication, so the publishing frequency

will be less than we have been enjoying due to Jeri‐Ann’s efforts.

I hope to have better news to report on the next newsletter issue,

whenever that is.

Best wishes to the whole HTMA family for a safe and merry Christmas.
