FROM IKEA

Help a Horse Day was created in 2013 by the ASPCA as a way to provide a national day of recognition for equine organizations, to spread the word about the lifesaving work they do on behalf of at-risk horses and to show their communities how to join in the effort.

Celebrated throughout the month of April, the official Help A Horse Day falls on April 25th this year. Horse Haven of Tennessee has a Help a Horse Day event planned for April 25th along with other events throughout the month of April. To find out more visit horsehaventn.org/events.

Meet the Dancers

Katherine McDonough of Penrose Farm experienced horses at a very young age when she asked to go on a park pony ride. When the pony picked up the trot, Katherine began screaming to be pulled off. Years later at summer camp, a friend suggested they take riding lessons together. Reluctantly, Katherine agreed, and was loving every moment. Today, Katherine is a three-day event r ider competing at the novice level with her Irish Sport Horse, Red. Katherine's Professional Dance partner is Jake Rivera

Evan Denson, a Colorist at Salon Visage, spent a summer working in California for his cousin, a Large Animal Vet, doing horse dentistry. It was Evan’s job to hold the horse still while his cousin worked on the horses’ teeth. Now when he gets close to a horse, he checks its teeth before going on a trail ride.

Evan's partner is Professional Dancer Rachel Henriquez

Stephanie will be dancing with Professional Dancer Jeremy Norris

Stephanie Beecken is a crime reporter for WATE 6 “On Your Side.“ As a lover of everything and anything outdoors, she has spent numerous hours and miles hiking the trails of our Great Smoky Mountains. Her favorite thing to do is to visit her family’s 60-acre farm outside Chattanooga and ride her boy, Cochise.

Myra Leichtweisis serves as an HHT Board Member. When she’s not working to support HHT, she travels and dances. She is an experienced Belly dancer, and recently added “Lyrical and Character” dancing, a blend of ballet and jazz, to her experience. She also enjoys working with the Akima Club, a women’s community service organization.

Myra will be dancing with Professional Dancer Al Henriquez

Marco Villareal dances each morning to the music in the bump outs as a Morning Anchor for Local 8 News. In college, Marco met a beautiful competitive ballroom dancer. To spend more time with her, Marco took ballroom dance l e s s o n s , w h i c h d i d n ' t w i n h i m a n y competitions... but did help to win the heart of his future wife!

Marco's partner is Professional Dancer April Jilbert

Jay Teter, Lead Master of Ceremonies for Dixie Stampede, was exposed to riding at an early age in Southern Michigan in 4H. Jay continued showing and competing on the Horse Team at Michigan State because 4H was where the pretty girls were. Working for Opryland, Jay has quite a bit of dance experience. In the 2012 Dancing with the Knoxville Stars, Jay and his partner beat out Bo Williams for the trophy.

Jay will be partnering with Professional Dancer Emily Norris

A special thanks to:

Jeff Mondlock, WBIR Reporter, developed a love for horses at a young age when his Grandma and Grandpa would take him to rodeos. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, Jeff will confess that this experience brightened his image of horses. Now ,these majestic animals represent that precious t ime with h is grandmother who passed away ten years ago.

Jeff's partner is Professional Dancer Stephanie Braeuner

Ashley's Professional Dance Partner is Chris Larsen.

Ashley Farrington shares her love of horses with everyone at her West Knoxville training and boarding farm, Paige Farm, while working on her Masters Degree in History. Ashley has been a division champion at many horse shows, includ-ing Brownland Farms in Nashville, TN, HITS Ocala and HITS Saugerties. She looks forward to continuing to compete her Zangersheide Warm-blood, Chakira Z.

Meet the Judges

Kim Dickey competed as a dancer in the 2014 Dancing for the Horses and won the Isaac Award. It's safe to say that Kim knows a thing or two about how these dance competitions go. When she's not dancing or judging, you can find Kim working at ProToy Automotive Service Center.

Lisa Turner began dancing as a teen, starting off in line dancing, and soon after began partner dancing. Lisa and her husband, PJ, host a weekly dance class called "Westie Wednesdays" at Dance Tonight's Knoxville Studio.

Daniel R. Lineberger has performed as Featured Dancer for the Knoxville, Tulsa and Atlanta Ballet Companies. Daniel has proudly been part of the Pro Cast in Dare to Dance (2011-2013), Dancing Stars of Dalton (2012-2013), and Dancing with the Knoxville Stars (2013-2014). He is the Executive Director of the Miss Knoxville Pageant, and a part of the Judging body for the Miss America Organization.

The Isaac AwardAs the top award given at Dancing for the Horses, the Isaac Award is given to the Star Dancer whose combined fundraising efforts and dance routine give them the best score. The Isaac Award got its name in honor of an over-achieving, lovable horse that found his way into Horse Haven's care. Abused and neglected, Isaac refused to give up and worked hard to persevere over his former situation.

In August 2011, Isaac was introduced to Maryville College Equestrian Team when they were looking to adopt a horse. He couldn't really steer well, but was really sweet and willing. Then, there was his amazing trot! It was clear that he was a Dressage pony! The Treasurer at the college pulled cash out of his won wallet to pay the adoption fee.

In the fall of 2012, Isaac found his new home with Board Member, Teresa Shafer. In 2014, he and Teresa began his show career in Wellington, FL, where he blossomed into an award-winning Dressage show horse. He was awarded the 2014 Reserve National Champion from the National Dressage Pony Cup which ranks all of the ponies nation-wide based upon their cumulative scores through the show season. Not bad for a pony from Horse Haven!
