Welcome to the first edition of
Limerick Sports Partnership’s
newsletter. In this issue we report
on a variety of programmes that
took place during 2014 following
our very successful merger in
January together with information
on our calendar of events for
2015.
The LSP was officially launched by
Mr. John Treacy, CEO of the Irish
Sports Council in May 2014. Since
the amalgamation of both County
Limerick and Limerick City Sports
Partnerships the LSP have had
direct contact with over 23,000
participants through targeted
programmes with key groups
namely; disadvantaged youths,
Older Adults, Travellers, People
with Disabilities, Young People,
Schools, Teenage Girls and Wom-
en.
Programmes include New Year
New Start, Go for Life Games,
Schools Marathon Challenge,
Community Health & Wellness,
Men on the Move, Wheelchair
Hurling, Halliwick, Mother of all
Tag and Kids Run for Fun, to name
but a few!!!!
One of the key success of the LSP
is our ability to work in partnership
with a number of agencies so that
programmes and projects can be
developed further and can be-
come more sustainable. This is
very evident in the case of pro-
jects developed with the Local
Authority, West Limerick Re-
sources, Limerick & Clare ETB,
UL, HSE, Mid West Regional Drug
& Alcohol Forum, Foroige, Limer-
ick Childcare Committee, Sports
Groups and the Disability Sector.
Our new website was also
launched www.limercksports.ie
This is a one stop shop for all the
physical activity opportunities and
education and training courses
taking place in Limerick.
As always if there is anything you
would like highlighted in our news-
letter or website please feel free to
email us at [email protected]

Welcome to Limerick Sports Partnership
The LSP awarded 56 clubs with development grants in the range of €500 to €1000. Clubs
were invited to a cheque presentation
evening where Mr. John Treacy, CEO of
the Irish Sports Council presented
cheques to the successful clubs togeth-
er with officially launching the newly
merged “Limerick Sports Partnership”.
Speaking ahead of his visit to UL, Mr. Treacy described the amalgamation of the Sports Partnerships as a "significant step towards developing a unified approach to increasing partici-pation in sport in every community across Limerick". He added: "Limerick has a proud sport-ing reputation but it is essential that every effort is made to ensure all sections of society are provided with opportunities to engage in recreational activities and to participate in sport. The City and County Sports Partnerships have over the years helped to increase participation levels throughout Limer-ick, and I have no doubt that the pooling of their resources and expertise will deliver divi-dends for the people of Limerick in years to come."

Over the past few years many women in Moyross, Southill and Garryowen have de-veloped a love affair with sport and physical activity. They have become women who no longer hide away from trying a new sport but instead embrace any opportunity that comes their way.
Over the past year the women involved in the ‘Mother of all Tag’ programme have continued to recruit new players to join their tag rugby team. They have increased their training times from once a week to twice a week and many have gained coaching qualifications to ensure that they are capable of leading worth-while and productive training sessions. While the programme was titled the ‘Mother of all Tag’ many of the participants involved have engaged in additional activities such as circuit training, aerobics, insanity workouts and group fitness classes. Through group support and motivation the women set up walk/ jog groups and trained up to 5 days a week in preparation for the Great Limerick Run 10km challenge. Over 15 women success-fully completed the 10km and in doing so
collected sponsorship for a number of extremely worthy caus-es. Through sport and physical activity the women of Moyross, Southill and Garryowen have formed strong relationships and friendships and continue to encourage their teammates and friends to challenge themselves to get involved in physical ac-tivity and try new fun and exciting activities. This programme is open to women of all ages and abilities, if you would like to get involved please contact Tracy on [email protected]

Spinal Injuries Ireland in conjunction with the Limerick
Sports Partnership introduced their first Limerick group
to the Halliwick programme. The Halliwick programme
is a progressive programme of mental adjustment, dis-
engagement and development of motor control with an
emphasis on rotational control and applies the pro-
gramme to teach people with physical disabilities bal-
ance, control, swimming and independence. This was a
very successful programme and the LSP wish the group
all the best in their continuation of the Halliwick pro-
gramme. Please contact Elaine at
[email protected] for more information.
19 Older Adults from across Limerick City and County travelled to DCU in Dublin on Saturday 7th June to
participate in the Go For Life National Games. The competition
involved counties participating in three different games; Scidils,
Flisk & Lobbers. The Limerick Team had put in weeks of practice
prior to the event with weekly practical sessions taking place in
Southill Area Centre and the Woodlands Hotel, Adare. The Limer-
ick teams did extremely well in all 3 competitions and everyone
had a great day representing their County in the Go For Life
event.
It is hoped in September a Limerick League can be developed to
encourage additional older adults to participate in physical activi-
ty. If you would like more information on the event or other activi-
ties for older adults please contact Tracy at

Yet again the Summer Swim Lessons filled up fast. The pro-
gramme involves educating local people through an assistant
swim teacher’s course and enabling them to practice swim
teaching through the summer lessons. The course consists of
improver/advanced and advanced levels.
This is a win/win for both the swim teachers as they get to
practice teaching and the pupils who get to learn new and im-
portant life skills.
If you are interested in getting involved either in the swim les-
sons or taking part in the assistant swim teacher’s course
please contact Tracy at [email protected]

Businesses throughout Limerick marked “World Mental Health Week” by participating in a competitive re-
lay marathon at the UL Sport Arena Athletics Track.
The Inaugural Company Relay Marathon Challenge saw participating teams take on the 26.2mile course
which was divided into 210 sections of 200m. Each company team consisted of 15 participants who ran
the 200m section at least 14 times each over the
2+ hours event.
AMCS Group’s Crecora based office claimed the
Company Relay Marathon Challenge title with a
time of 2:00:36 (2hours and 36 seconds), smash-
ing the current marathon world record of 2:02:57
held by Kenya’s Dennis Kimetto. The company,
which produces recycling and waste manage-
ment software & on-vehicle technology solu-
tions, led the race from start to finish. The teach-
er from Salesians Secondary College in Pal-
laskenry came in second with a time of 2:04:42,
while the talking point of the night was the close
finish between the HSE and Limerick City and
County Council. The 2 organisations were neck
and neck throughout the event but it was the
HSE who came out on top at the final post piping the Local Authority by just 8 seconds for third place. UL
Sport (5th), Action Point (6th) and Avvio (7th) also completed the Marathon.
Due to the success of the inaugural event, the Company Marathon Challenge will now be an annual event.

Holmes O’Malley Sexton hosted the inaugural Christmas Blanket 5k

North Campus, University of Limerick. There was no fee attached to
this event however participants were asked to donate clean blankets
or warm coats for those experiencing difficulties during Christmas.
The event was open to all the family where participants walked,
jogged or ran the distance.
Afterwards participants were treated to tea/coffee and festive mince
pies in the Pavilion.
A very impressive 170+ people took part in the event and during the following week, LSP staff delivered all do-
nated blankets, coats etc. to various homeless services in Limerick.
The main aim of this LSP event was to help those in need to stay warm in winter. It is envisaged that this event
will be an annual event with different services benefitting from participants generosity every year.
Operation Transformation National Walk will take
place on Saturday 17th January beginning at UL
Sport Arena at 11am.

initiative combining taster sessions in a number of different sports with facilitated group workshops on
topics such as Bullying, Suicide Awareness, Stress and Anxiety to name but a few.
Over the course of the academic year pupils from St. Nessans Communi-
ty College in Moylish will take part in taster sessions in 9 different sports
that they may not have had the opportunity to take part in before. Each
taster session will be followed up with a facilitated group workshop on a
subject pertaining to mental health. The workshops are being facilitated
by Resolve Counselling and this programme is part funded by the Mid-
Western Drug and Alcohol Task Force.
So far participants have had taster sessions in Fencing, Archery, Insanity
and Boxercise. The LSP is hopeful that this programme will be rolled out
on a much larger scale in the future.

The LSP have now entered its fourth year of the Sports Hall Athletics Programme and it has grown from
strength to strength!!! From humble beginnings with one set of equipment, we now have five hubs cover-
ing the City and County where schools can bring their students to avail of expert coaching in the discipline
of athletics.
The Sports Hall Athletics Programme comprises of Track & Field events. It helps to promote multi-skill de-
velopment e.g. agility, balance and coordination
(ABC’s). It encourages high level of participation,
as there is something in it for everyone. Limerick
Sports Partnership has set the programme up in a
way that there is an ease of introduction which
assists the non-specialist PE and non-qualified
teaching support staff. While the LSP has coach-
es and volunteers in most venues, teachers are
actively encouraged to get involved in the delivery
of the programme and there is a teacher training
option for any teacher(s) who wish to get a more
in-depth knowledge of the programme.
5 schools have completed the initial six week pro-
gramme since September with a further 20 signed
up to begin in early 2015. A Limerick Athletics
Blitz will be held in March and the winning teams from Limerick will go on and represent Limerick in the
National Sports Hall Athletics Finals to be held in Athlone Institute of Technology in March 2015.
If your school is interested in taking part in this programme please contact Liam at
One of the LSP’s main aims is to provide Education and Training opportunities for sports
clubs/coaches/participants and volunteers in Limerick. The Child Protection in Sport
Basic Awareness and Children’s Officer course together with Active Leadership are our
main Irish Sports Council educational programmes. These courses are delivered monthly in Limerick.
The Sports Partnership also deliver Sports First Aid courses e.g. FETAC Level 5 (3 day course), Refresher
FETAC Level 5 (one day) and a one day Sports First Aid Course.
As part of our Club CPD, we will be running a Seminar Series in 2015. Topics have yet to be confirmed
however keep an eye on our website or have a look at our Calendar of Events for 2015.

Community Health & Wellness The Community Health & Wellness seminar was developed to educate and encourage positive health and wellness throughout the community. The information seminar explains the benefits and importance of healthy eating and regular physical activity. The presentation is 90minutes in du-ration and provides people with the knowledge and information on topics such as what foods to eat, foods to avoid, food labels, types of physical activity and how much physical activity to engage in on a weekly basis for general health.
The Seminar includes practical elements on how some fitness aids can assist in getting you active and also a visual display of the fat and sugar
content in everyday foods. The seminars are very informative and help educate people on how to make healthy choices. If you think your school, community or club would be interested in availing of this seminar please contact Elaine at [email protected]
